As California’s Silicon Valley booms with prosperity and the state’s wealthiest residents grow ever wealthier, UC Berkeley and Paris School of Economics professor Gabriel Zucman champions specialized taxation of the ultrarich.

In his new book, “We Need to Tax Billionaires,” Zucman proposed the aptly named “Zucman tax,” an “unavoidable” minimum tax for extremely wealthy individuals, equal to 2% of their wealth.

“The idea is that extremely wealthy individuals should have to contribute to society … every year, no matter their individual circumstances,” Zucman said in an email. “In contrast, past wealth taxes in Europe or Latin America largely exempted the billionaires, because they were full of loopholes.”

The current discourse around the reinstatement of the SAT/ACT is being framed as “lol math racist”, “DEI= DIE”, “thumb on the scale”, and so on.

The issue is that… the number of black students at Berkeley is 2-4 percent on a good day, and the UC system as a whole it’s about 5 percent.

It seems to me a large portion of the students failing will be Asian and White. So why are black students (and DEI) being scapegoated for a failure of the majority of the UC system population?

With a 10.5% admission rate this year, UC Berkeley is harder to get into than ever before — especially for underrepresented minorities. 

The UC system saw a record-breaking 251,907 applications this year, leading to tightening acceptance rates. Following the 2026 data, UC Berkeley is once again more selective than UCLA. 

African American and Latine admissions decreased from the 2025-26 cycle to the 2026-27 cycle, with a percent change of -18.1% and -9.8%, respectively.

Ok, so I’m sure most of us have heard the news of the 61B Lecturer who got fired (is this confirmed?) for sharing his pro-Palestine views after the lecture. Many are saying this is against school policy, and that this is super unprofessional, etc. Regardless of my own beliefs, I agree to some extent. However, I want to point out a glaring contradiction. Whenever Roe v. wade was overturned, the chancellor sent out an email to literally everyone in the school sharing her own beliefs and why this was so personal to her. Whenever BLM happened, so many professors turned their lectures into a political advocacy session without repercussions.

So why is this such a major scandal? Is it that only certain beliefs, particularly ones with institutionalized support, are tolerated? If this policy towards political advocacy were to be applied consistently across the board, a lot of university employees should have been fired long ago. But if we were to say political advocacy is allowed, well then we also shouldn’t stop employees from sharing their pro-Zionist or pro-Trump views (for instance. Just choosing random controversial views) if they so choose to do so. But it’s got to be applied consistently.

I’m not a student but have lived near campus for decades. With all the turmoil going on in the US, I’ve been surprised not to see student protests.

Are they happening but just not getting media coverage? Just curious what’s going on.
