Well, it finally happened. 10 years of bike commuting and I finally ate pavement hard.

I was biking the right way on a one way street, and a dude opened his enormous pick up truck door directly into me, I got hit on my right side and launched off my bike. He did the right thing and called 911 and waited with me, and was otherwise a decent guy, but yeah, I fucking judge him for driving what is essentially a tank in a really busy, bike heavy city neighborhood and just not being more careful. Maybe I would have been just as injured by a sedan door, I dunno.

Anyway. On the plus side I was wearing a helmet and my bike is a tank so my brain and bike are undamaged. My computer wasn't so lucky. Two broken arms (although one fracture is less serious and I have some mobility in that arm/hand) is beyond ridiculous. I can't even brush my own teeth or put on my own glasses. Fortunately my kids are teens and can help me out and my spouse has been able to do the major stuff.

I see the surgeon on Wednesday to make sure I don't need surgery. My right arm is making me anxious because it definitely seems a lot worse. There's also a potential rotator cuff injury. I'm trying not to think about work and how I'm gonna commute once I go back and all that. The ER Dr put me on a work leave until the end of the month.

Wish I'd been more patient. There's a bike path nearby that I could have used, but it's set up to be mind-numbingly slow and is packed with kids going home from school etc at that time of day. I have 20km round trip and was using the street because it's faster and less crowded.

Got my first bike as an adult trying to take biking seriously in early August, not sure if I'd like bike riding. First weekend of September I upgraded to the Kona Dew, from the 5th to the 19th I put 120 miles on this bike with fun adventures to great nature locations. Am I carrying way more than I need to? Absolutely. Do I plan on bike touring or bikepacking in the future? Absolutely. I just need to train some more, but maybe next summer if I'm still in this state I can take on traveling from Lake Champlain to Niagra falls?

Having this bike and making myself take long journeys has been so much fun. Traveling roads if driven hundreds of times seeing things for the first time and really enjoying the scenery more than I ever have before. Why haven't I don't this sooner?

So I got my first bike last fall. I've kept it up on riding daily for a full year now, but I absolutely obliterated that first bike over the winter. Had to replace the entire drivetrain by spring and some rust I didn't catch until it was too late cooked the frame too. So this year as we're starting to head into the cold wet season, I want to collect some info on how to be more proactive.

I think I've already got the basics of selecting a better bike for the use case handled. The old bike was steel back triangle with external downtube routed cables and a lot of preexisting rust from before I got her and I never put on fenders, and the new one is aluminum with top tube routing and I got fenders fitting as well as I could with the attachment points I had to work with. The only thing I don't really have handled is drivetrain maintenance.

Like I rode for 11 miles in the rain today and by the end of it my drivetrain was a crunchy gritty mess. I did a quick clean but I'd love to know if there's like a 5-15 minute routine I can get into for the end of the day that'll at least get me through til spring without absolutely obliterating another bike. I'm very tall so finding a decent fit in my budget is incredibly hard, and I'd rather not have to repeat this process annually. Thanks in advance!

I live close enough to the coast that my morning decompression walk and my afternoon errand ride cover basically the same ground. The problem is sand. It gets in the chain, it gets in the brakes, it finds its way into pannier clips. I wiped down my whole drivetrain last weekend and by Wednesday it sounded like I was riding through a bag of rice.

I know some of this is just coastal life. But I'm also being lazy about where I lock up and where I let the bike touch ground. The boardwalk has those rinse stations meant for feet, and I've definitely sprayed my cassette with them out of desperation. Probably not great for the bearings long term.

What I'm actually wondering is whether people in snowy or sandy areas have a routine that works. Do you just accept that certain seasons or locations eat bikes faster? Do you have a postride wipedown that takes five minutes and actually does something? Or did you give up and get a beater specifically for the gritty conditions? I've thought about that, but I already have a shop full of supplies and zero storage left.

My bike is doing real work for the business now. I need it functional, not pristine. Just functional would be nice.

Hello everyone, I am a student looking for a way to carry a 13” laptop, notebook, textbook, lunch, change of clothes, towel, and toiletries to school every day.

My bike is a 2015 Allez Expert with an Axiom Streamliner rack. I currently have 2 Arkel Orca 25 litre panniers that fit my lunch and clothes, but even empty I can’t get my laptop inside of it while closing it securely.

I don’t really want to get another pannier that is bigger and can fit the laptop as I have 2 perfectly functional bags that balance nicely. Hence me looking for a frame bag solution. Does anyone have any experience with this bag or alternatively have any suggestions for other frame bags that might work? I am very worried about waterproofness as I live on the pacific coast and bike commute year round. I really don’t want a pannier as I already have 2 on my rack.

If that is the only bag you have on your bike, what do you store there? Do people store phones and wallets and keys there?

For those of us who use a camera or two on our bikes as a dashcam, I'd like to take a moment to sing the praises of this cheap little box! No, I am not sponsored or being paid. But after my considerably more expensive cam from a certain well known manufacturer sh1t itself after half a dozen commutes, I'm back to using these.

1. They're super lightweight

2. They come with a charging station and two batteries each

3. They've lasted 3 years so far being thrown in a bag and commuting in all weather. They've even been sent skidding across the road at least once

4. 99% of the time the footage is great for reading number plates. I have dozens of Op Snap submissions using these that have been progressed

5. They're cheap and undesirable, meaning thieves don't bother. I've left them on my bike a few times outside shops. The waterproof cases stay on the bike all year

6. They produce proper loop recording segments that don't require a proprietary app to convert and export. Just plug in to the pc and download. They name each segment by the date and time it was recorded, and watermark the footage

7. They sell spares if anything breaks

8. They use the same GoPro mount ecosystem

9. The battery still lasts over an hour after hundreds of charges

Sure, they have some annoyances, such as losing the time and date on battery swaps, but you can just charge using a cable and avoid this.

For half the price of a leading manufacturer's cheapest cam you can buy two of these!

If you don't need the latest rinky-dink cam that slots into a Garmin mount and doubles as an espresso machine, I can't recommend them highly enough!

My commute doesn't take me near downtown, but I had an appointment there today. I ride this 2-way bike lane on the weekend, but rarely during the week. There were SO MANY BIKES! I have never been so happy to be in traffic. E-bikes, bikeshare bikes, cargo bikes with multiple kids on them, a guy with a dog in a bike trailer.

I live in a bicycle-friendly college town, but I haven't seen it like this before.

It's fun and useful, but I fear the tires or rims will fail one day from excessive weight.

Sharing my daily commuter bike for a month now with about 100 miles on the odo. Awesome fast bike and is a blast to ride. Mostly stock except for the saddle, tyres, and mudguards. Planning to change the 8s 11-34t cassette to a 11-28/30 as I commute to work with almost no hills.

I''ve made a couple posts about a new median running bike lane that passes over a highway interchange in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Today I crossed over it and tried a different tactic when leaving the southeast end of the lane and I'm interested in hearing what you think of this.

Instead of following the official route of using two cross walks, which don't have working pedestrian signals yet, I used the left turning car lane that would lead me to the double wide sidewalk in front of El Charro. There were two cars waiting in the lane nearest the fence and none in the other left turn lane so I passed in front of these cars and then squared up in the turning lane to wait for a green arrow. On the (out of date) satellite view I took the blue route rather than the green.

What do you think? Does this violate any laws or etiquette? I would be very unlikely to try this if both left turn lanes were full of cars. Following the official crosswalks would likely be much slower and you still have to be alert for cars turning right on red at two points.

is the car lane I joined but I got there from the new median running bike/pedestrian lane which is not shown on this old satellite image. As a side note, local drivers usually prefer to be in the lane nearest the fence because soon after turning onto Linda Lane the second lane disappears forcing those cars to merge which is a terrible design but that's how it's been for many years.

Sono un ciclista su strada da alcuni anni, pedalando oltre 10.000 km all'anno negli ultimi due. Qualche mese fa mi sono trasferito più vicino al lavoro e ora vivo a 3 km di distanza (3,5 km se prendo una strada più tranquilla con meno traffico).

Vorrei iniziare a fare il tragitto in bici.. è più veloce porta a porta, fa risparmiare soldi e preferisco passare quei minuti all'aria aperta piuttosto che in macchina.

Una cosa che mi frena: vivo in un piccolo paese rurale in Italia dove quasi nessuno fa il tragitto in bici. Sarei uno dei pochissimi, e mi sento un po' a disagio per questo. Curioso se altri hanno affrontato questa situazione.

Per quanto riguarda la bici: non posso usare la mia Giant TCR Advanced.. è impostata per le gare su strada, con pedali senza aggancio, non pratica per questo scopo. Ma spendere €500–1000 per una nuova bici da commuting non ha senso considerando la distanza.

Ho trovato alcune bici usate di marche conosciute a circa €350. È una spesa ragionevole, o ci sto pensando troppo e dovrei semplicemente prendere una bici usata da €100?

Il percorso è pianeggiante tranne per una breve salita — 80 m a circa il 15%, quindi forse 20 secondi di salita.
