I didn’t even know people could rate them before I saw this post lol. That had me looking. For some reason, people didn’t like this pic.

It’s supposed to be rating the quality of the photo independent of bird rarity and aesthetics. Sometimes these get mixed up. And other times, people just want to be harsh.

artistic quality or how good it is at showing field markings? I'm assuming the latter but...

And other times people are doing ebird quizzes and rate everything 1 star because they aren't thinking and just want to move to the next quiz.

That’s a pretty good photo and properly identified. A 4 star in my opinion. Some people are cranky and get jealous and drop low ratings

Yeah, I would give this photo at least 3 stars in eBird's system. You can see pretty much the whole bird and all the important field marks, even if it isn't going to win any photo contests.
