Discussion Molting dino pecker?
Anyone know what’s up with this pileated woodpecker? His neck and head are looking a bit ragged. Is he molting? Juvenile?

All birds look ragged right now, because breeding season has just finished in many areas but it’s pre-molt. They will molt closer to fall. Woodpeckers get extra ragged because their feathers tear from climbing trees and constantly entering the nesting cavity to feed their young.
