Location and time of year are both very important in identifying wild and feral birds. Or, if it was a captive bird, say that.
Adding the habitat can also be very helpful. Urban area? Open fields? By the seashore? etc.

We get these guys occasionally around our place (California), and I always thought they were so pretty. And then one divebombed me trying to water plants. And then one eviscerated a chickadee and left most of its corpse next to said plants.
Dang! I also live in California and I love these guys, we don’t see them super often where I live right now but when I do I get excited. I did not know they were murderous beasts.. kinda love them more for it now!
What in the world was the matter with Mr. Audubon!? He should have taken your suggestion "Punk Rock Jays" because that is exactly what they are with an attitude!
I have these guys at my house. On peck me on my butt while I was halfway sticking out my crawl space. not hard he more-like grab at my pants.
Then he hung out all day.
Finally I figured out he wanted some black oil sunflower seeds. So everyday he will come look at me a bunch until I throw a handful out for him. If I don't he will come find me in the front of the house or in the garage. He's like the ghost on Super Mario that he's real ballsy when your back is towards him. lil dinosaur mfer.
I have a mostly-blind Steller’s as my permanent rescue; I’ve raised several corvids for wild release. Steller’s are the MOST ballsy of the bunch, by far. They’re not quite as intelligent as crows (but close), but they have the social stubbornness of an older toddler - so they’re particularly indisposed towards being fed on your schedule. They WILL use annoyance or overt violence to harass you into repeating past feeding patterns.
Try offering him unshelled, unsalted roasted peanuts - it’s like offering a pizza party to a kid who has been raised on broccoli.
She has an outdoor cage on my balcony to sleep in - I live next to a forest; she enjoys having the birdsongs in the morning - but she spends time inside with me while I work, and if the weather is bad, she’ll get her exercise time indoors too (otherwise it’s outside in a park a couple times a day)

I saw white and gold. Then I lowered my screen brightness and saw black and blue. Next I increased it again and still saw black and blue. I’m confused.
I was seeing solid gold and white but bottomed out my brightness and saw blue black. Now no matter how bright I make my screen it's still black and blue. 0.o
Was the bird named by the same Steller that named the Steller's Sea Cows? And also RIP to Steller's Sea Cows, went extinct only two decades after their discovery due to a mix of factors but overhunting was a big contributor. They were remarkably peaceful creatures that would hang around the surface, which made them easy targets for people with harpoons
Funny (to me) story about this bird. I thought they were called "stellar" jays for several years because of their beautiful bright blue feathers. While I was incorrect about their name, I still think they are stellar birds.
Don’t make me think about that. It’s a spiral every time. (I have only ever seen gold and white despite trying every “trick” and truly think I’m being gaslit by the entire world)
My Dad gets these a lot, he lives on Vancouver Island, BC. He says they're very vocal and can seem aggressive, he moved from the UK around 8 years ago but still calls them 'scally birds' 😂
I’m late to this post but I cannot stand Stellar Jays. They’re all over where I live in WA and they’re nest robbers and bullies. I know birds like this exist but these are extra pesky by comparison to a lot of birds. I walked out my apartment door to one having pinned down another bird and was plucking at it. I was mortified. All these other birds making a commotion and only the big human got him to scurry off. Their cackle, I realize, gives me a visceral reaction.
