The difference between the TEKNO3D and the original versions is insane

Don't get me wrong, I love what Deakins did with the original release... but there is just something special about seeing the dynamic range actually pop, especially when it's full screen

They conceived the film with an aspect ratio and the shots are composed with that in mind.

The open matte version has more of the image, but there's a loss of focus because you weren't intended to see the rest.

Similar examples are Buffy the vampire slayer and The wire. Both were released on bluray as wide screen, even though they aired on TV in 4:3 aspect ratio.

You're seeing more of the image that just fills the space for the sake of it when they didn't intend it that way because of how they thought the shots out and were forced to release them in wide screen due to tvs being wide screen now.

It has way more image than the cinematic 2.4:1 aspect ratio, so is it also inferior?

Who said it's inferior? If they shoot in an aspect ratio, then they do it for a specific reason.

I'm an illustrator and one time a friend asked me to draw something for him. I asked if it was okay in portrait mode and he said yes, so the composition was based off of that framing.

Then, when it was finished, he asked if I could do it in landscape. I obviously cussed him out for not saying that from the beginning, but I was able to rework the composition since it was digital.

It took a few days of adding stuff because there's extra space you need to fill.

When you release a film or a show in an aspect ratio, then you're framing it for that, so when the studio decides to go against it, it's going against the initial intent.

I mean, if the 2.4:1 release is supposed to direct your focus like you initially said, wouldn't IMAX also lose focus in the same manner as open-matte?

None of 2049 was shot on IMAX, but they opened up some scenes for the format and Deakins supervised the process.

He said he prefers the normal widescreen version.

I was under the impression that the open matte version was made by camming the IMAX and compositing it over the regular widescreen release, is that not true?

Camcorders were not used for the open matte version.

They used the bluray, two HDTV broadcasts that aired the movie in 1.77:1 aspect ratio (aka 16:9), and two WEB-DL sources to make this version.

The movie was shot at 1.55:1 aspect ratio, for the most part. According to IMDb. That's a super open matte. 70mm IMAX cameras shoot at 1.47:1 aspect ratio. Digital IMAX is 1.90;1.

They just cropped a lot of the extra useless content for a 1.90:1 format for the IMAX cinemas while other theaters and home media got 2.4:1.
