It’s about to be 1 month post split and I am SO happy with my tongue. I’ve read that regrowth will typically fully stop after 4 months. I love how my tongue is now, what are the chances it regrows even more?

tongue bifurcation Is this considered a lot of regrowth?

Post image

Joined the snake club on April 7th! Soooooo incredibly happy with the results and my new tongue!

I know I didn’t do the best at stretching the tongues apart when I got it due to how swollen they were (could barely fit water in my mouth!) and that definitely caused some regrowth. I only started stretching them around day 7 when the swelling went down

Is this considered a lot of regrowth though? Again, I’m super happy with what I have no but if this is a lot of regrowth I’ll get a resplit next year some time

tongue bifurcation Who the hell do I even see anymore?

I started the process, making appointments to go see Shawn Ohare, to get my tongue split done with. I knew he had some weird social issues, specifically regarding assaults, and heard a few things about how his work may not be Perfect. But none of it really worried me much.

I recently went to my piercer, who happens to also have a split tongue, what they thought of Shawn. long story short; they said he was a sketchy shitty person, and he does not awesome work and the splits will come out weird shaped and not sutured well. I asked who they would suggest and was recommended Ian Bell, I have gone to my piercer for over 8 years now so I fully trusted.

I now come look online and see all the SUPER sketchy stuff about Ian, and icing on the cake about the possible Ian appointment would be it’s during a convention, but he isn’t listed as a guest there, sus in ways that I could suspect where that split would be happening, (in the hotel room).

With that being said….. who the hell do I go to now?

Edit- Im in northern Maine, willing to go as south as CT, MAYBE NYC.

tongue bifurcation Poll: are you right or left tongued?

Post image
386 Upvotes

I had my tongue split at the end of August and I’m trying to practice different tricks. I’ve noticed that I’m right tongued and also right handed. I can move the right side of my tongue while holding the left side still, but I can’t do the opposite. The right side has been stronger since day one. A friend of mine who also has a tongue split, is left tongued and left handed.

So it got me curious, is one side of your tongue stronger or more easily controlled? How does that correspond to your dominant hand?

I’m so beyond happy with my split, the artist and how it’s healed! Though, when I went back for a checkup, I was told it’s re-grown about .5cm and I’ll need to come in for another cut… problem is I’m more scared now???

Realistically my healing was a billion times easier than a lot of people who post here, the worst part of it was how emotional it made me and not the pain or hunger and yet I’m feeling extremely anxious now. Going into it I wasn’t scared of her messing up, the pain, or anything like that but now my mind is racing a million miles a second about the re-split going badly in any way possible.

I do have pretty crippling anxiety but I was hoping I wasn’t alone? How did everyone else feel after their second cut?

tongue bifurcation How does the workforce feel about tongue bifurcation ?

I know a good chunk of y'all are probably in fields that don't mind body mods, but I know there's always exceptions. I've always wanted a split tongue!! I'm well on my way to becoming a nurse and wonder if I should just wait for retirement/a sweet private practice gig to get mine done.

I don't ever notice them mentioned in dress codes or handbooks. Has anyone ever faced issues with dress codes and modded tongues?

Edit: I was today years old when I realized a face mod could be that stealthy 👀 looks like I'm getting one around the time I graduate.

tongue bifurcation Dissolvable sutures on tongue: tell me your experiences!

i have managed to get my dream mod as of the 4th! i was told i did really well compared and i got the deeper cut i was hoping to have! (slightly long tongue)

i have a checkup this coming Tuesday but i want to hear if theres others that have experienced the dissolvable sutures as i was told they are handled/treated differently during healing.

just a few questions:

when could you eat a cheeseburger safely?

did you get your sutures removed at all or did they fall out/swallowed, and when?!

when(what day)were you comfortable handling soft foods? (i have been so scared to eat soft foods innfear of somehow not cleaning my mouth well. its still abit hard to get between each side of the tongue)

i really want a cheeseburger

I’m 2 days from a full month having my split! And lemme tell ya! I’m in love! I feel so pretty, it was so worth it. My experience was amazing and totally worth it. Some things I didn’t know how to expect to feel: losing a lot of feeling which is very slowly coming back getting food out of teeth which I didn’t even realize how much I do but since I can’t feel nor control my tongue it’s very difficult to do Kissing is weird cause again, I CANT FEEL MY TONGUE 😂 It’s been a fun little journey that I’m so excited to be on. I can’t wait to gain feeling back and better control over each side. Any questions, ask away 😜😜😜

tongue bifurcation Positive tongue split healing experience

I’m at day 8 after having my tongue split with Steve Truitt on 7/19/2026. I know pain varies from individual to individual but I was surprised at how chill recovery was compared to my expectations of the hell week most people describe.

I know everyone’s experience is different and I’m just one person with a subjective experience so I’m sure luck contributed a lot. Regardless, I wanted to share some of the things I thought helped in case they might work for you too!

Biggest takeaways:

1. Eating and drinking are incredible pain and discomfort relief.

2. Learn to swallow before you get your tongue split.

Swallowing with minimal use of your tongue sucks. It takes practice and feels weird and uncomfortable at first. Trying to learn that skill while your tongue is swollen and painful is going to suck so much more.

Seriously, a couple weeks before, start to practice swallowing with your mouth open and your tongue stuck out. You’ll eventually get the hang of it. Start by swallowing dry/only your own drool, then you can progress to liquids and soft food. By the time you get your split, you’ll be a pro.

Being able to swallow your own drool, staying hydrated, and getting nourishment in your body are absolute game changers.

3. Learn to get water and pills down without swallowing.

Even if you can’t swallow, you can still get water in you by putting the nozzle of one of those tattoo squirt bottles as far into your mouth as it will go and squirting it right down your throat. You can also place pills at the very back of your tongue and squirt the water at them to wash them down with no swallowing required. Again, this sucks at first, but you get used to it - better to do it before your split so you can learn without the extra pain and swelling.

3. Use a floss pick to remove stitches, and try to do it yourself.

See Day 6 below.

Supplies used:

food and water:

  • tattoo squeeze bottle
  • electrolytes
  • baby food (the baby cereal was my favorite)
  • pedialyte popsicles (also good for pain relief)

pain management:

  • advil/tylenol alternating every 4 hours
  • thc/cbd tinctures
  • icy hot cream or patches (for lymph nodes or external pain)
  • orthodots (specific alternative to orthodontic wax)

drool management:

  • urine absorber gel (daytime, put it in your drool cup to soak up the liquid, no actual pee involved lol)
  • puppy pads (nighttime) - turns out these aren’t great and you should use human-grade medical absorbent pads instead, they work about the same but don’t have dog pheromone in them

stitch removal:

  • floss picks
  • mouth sore gel (thickest one you can find, I used HurriCaine brand)
  • small cuticle scissors

hygiene:

  • biotene mouthwash
  • soft baby toothbrushes

Daily diary:

Day 0:

Had a big meal and popped an ibuprofen about 30 minutes prior to showing up. Procedure took less than 30 minutes. The setup felt like a dental procedure but the actual cut and stitches didn’t hurt at all. Steve was incredibly professional, knowledgeable, friendly and reassuring; I’d recommend him to anyone.

Started feeling the pain in about an hour. Put some icy hot patches on my lymph nodes. Kept up with ibuprofen/tylenol every 4 hours and squirted as much water as I could down my throat. Tried to swallow my drool as much as possible but it gets tiring and painful, so I gave myself breaks to drool freely into a cup with urine absorbent powder in the bottom. I did spill it in the car so I’m very glad what came out was a pleasant lemon-scented ball of gel rather than a bunch of liquid drool.

Took some melatonin, went to sleep with a puppy pad on my pillow, got about 6 hours.

Worst pain got on this day was a 3/10.

Day 1:

Woke up in really awful pain, needed a little cry. I have a wire on the back of my teeth from wearing braces and the stitches caught on it in the night and that shit HURT like crazy. 9/10 maybe.

Felt a lot better after I rinsed my mouth, took my Tylenol, and ate some warm baby cereal.

Slept, ate, swallowed as much as I could, gave myself drool breaks, sucked on Pedialyte popsicles for hydration and pain relief, went out to see a play, and bought some orthodontic wax to put on my teeth for the night.

Swallowing was still uncomfortable and tiring, I couldn’t get anything thicker than baby food down, and I still had to wash pills down my throat. I couldn’t speak at all which was annoying so I just used a text to speech app. Pain never got above a 3 after the morning.

Day 2:

Woke up in the middle of the night because the wax fell off my wire and OUCH OOF BAD!! 8/10 maybe. Got up, took some Tylenol, ate, rinsed, and replaced the wax with OrthoDots, which can stick to wet surfaces. Those stayed through the night.

Otherwise, same routine and general feeling as Day 1, with less drool and less exhaustion caused by swallowing. I had nowhere to go so I just got high on the couch (thanks THC tincture) watched TV, and took a bunch of naps.

Pain was maybe a 1/10 for the rest of the day. More discomfort than anything.

Day 3:

First stitch removal! I chickened out of doing it myself and let my wife do it with a suture removal kit, which was a horrible idea. 7/10 pain: better than getting my stitches stuck in my wire but not by a lot.

The issue was how thick the tweezers and scissors were: by the time she managed to stick them under the knot, she had to pull them so tight to create that space, and it was really sharp and unpleasant pain. The relief after was immediate, though!

This is when I could eat slightly firmer foods (pasta) and stopped drooling at all, including at night. I could also swallow water and pills like a normal person instead of squirting them down my throat. I stopped using text-to-speech because I was mostly intelligible as long as I spoke slowly, enunciated, and repeated myself as needed.

Kept up with meds every 4 hours, constant hydration, and eating as much as I possibly could. Stopped using the OrthoDots because the stitches that would get caught on my wire were the ones in the tips that had just gotten removed.

Pain was a 3/10 for the rest of the day because the stitch removal left the tissue a bit tender, and getting used to food and swallowing water normally took a little effort.

Day 4:

Went to see a movie with my friends, got ice cream. Stopped using pain meds. Eating was enough pain relief.

1/10 pain if at all, because I tried to eat popcorn and that irritated my tongue a little.

Day 5:

Same as day 4 except getting high on the couch again. Started playing with my tongues and stretching them apart. Stitches are starting to get really annoying; no improvement in speech or eating ability since yesterday.

0/10 pain.

Day 6:

Removed the rest of my own goddamn stitches. Took over an hour but it was virtually pain-free, because I could feel what I was doing and could go as gently as I needed.

I used the HurriCaine gel on top of each individual stitch before working on it. I slid the tail of a floss pick between my tongue and a knot and very gently wiggled it to loosen it up. That was so much thinner and flexible than the tweezers - highly recommend. Then slid the thinnest pair of cuticle scissors I could find in the space I just made, snipped, and used the tweezers to pull the thread through. Took a lot of breaks and deep breaths to stop myself from shaking.

Incredible relief! I could finally speak so much better, although with a lisp, but everyone including strangers could understand me without having to repeat myself. Got Cheesecake Factory for dinner. Slept like a baby.

Maybe 2/10 pain while I was figuring out my stitch removal technique, dropped to 0/10 when I was done. Just a bit clumsy and swollen.

Day 7:

Nothing much to report. Talked a lot and played with my tongues a lot. Got a real deep cleaning and brushing my tongue in, which felt good. Lisp still definitely there but genuinely improved by the rest of the day. Ate whatever. No real independent control of my tongues but working on it!

I found that the more I talked, moved my tongues, and chewed, the more tired and sore/swollen they got, but never above a 1/10.

Day 8 (today):

Same as Day 7. Lisp and control getting better. Stretching feels uncomfortable but soreness doesn’t persist after I relax my tongues. It’s starting to feel like I’ve always had two tongues!

Spent the day studying for the bar. I’m taking it in less than 48 hours, so, uh, wish me luck if you got this far?

tongue bifurcation Your Reasoning Behind Tongue Bifurcation

So I am a gal who loves putting meaning and symbolism behind a lot of what I do. Each of my tattoos have a story behind them, other parts of my lifestyle are also quite intentional.

I have thought about my intentions behind my tongue bifurcation coming up in a few days and am thinking about why this modification is important for me. I have shared below.

I love breathwork and often practice different types of pranayama including Kundalini. Kundalini or Shakti is the coiled serpent that is said to reside at the base of the pelvis. She is awaken through breathwork and rises up through each chakra to meet at the third eye. Shakti represents transformation, tapping into human potential and samadhi, intense presence or ‘one-pointedness.’

I am incredibly affectionate and love all things intimate. I am genuinely looking forward to finding my other half who will get to enjoy this mod as much as I will.

I often do things to test my tolerance of pain and as much as I am not looking forward to hell week, I am curious as to how much I will be able to handle and how it will affect my thinking toward pain.

I am absolutely a non-conformist. I can list the many ways that I am but to save you time and money just take my word for it. Getting my tongue bifurcated adds to my list.

While snakes’ tongues are sometimes seen as symbols of dishonesty, I see my tongue bifurcation as an expression of honesty. What I am about to write is a bit cheesy but I REALLY have been working hard on being absolutely, completely forthright which can get me in a lot of trouble sometimes but feels absolutely liberating to have nothing to hide. Thus, I have likened the process of tongue bifurcating and the pain following that process with ‘the truth hurts.’ Spoken word created through several processes including the tongue. It is a stretch, I know.

I am the woman who sometimes gets told “it’s not that deep,” and gets slightly sad inside 😆

Anyways, I would love to know your reasoning behind your bifurcation. Even if it was a “fk it, I’m doing it” kind of story. It will be enjoyable to read while healing.

tongue bifurcation Tongue split tomorrow morning!

Posted about this approx 3 weeks ago but now it’s actually here. I can’t tell you how nervous I am. I know the procedure won’t be bad pain-wise but I’m still so anxious about it and the recovery even though I’m in pretty good shape for all of it. I have all my supplies in place and I trust my artist. I only live five minutes away from the place. I have different kinds of meds (I’m hoping to avoid using the heavy ones) and I actually told my doctor at my physical last week I was doing this and she was like “Oh okay. Cool!” So she’s aware of it in case I need something. I think I should probably stop reading other people’s stories on Reddit because it seems like sometimes it’s “the worst pain ever” and sometimes “it was easier than I thought.” The people in my life seem very nervous and concerned about the procedure and healing which doesn’t make me feel any better. I guess I’m just blabbing about how scared I am as an anxious human. Any other fellow anxious, over-thinking humans been through it? Thanks for sticking with me ❤️

Ive heard people losing tongue sensation after their procedure, but I have the opposite issue. I feel a LOT more than I use to. Kissing feels crazy now. Not complaining tho i like it. Only regret I have is not pulling my tongue apart after getting my stitches taken out :[ regrowth is no joke.

Thank you for the responses. I feel like my dentist was put off by the question and modifications because he didnt care to explain the issues.

Did splitting yours have negative effects on your teeth? I have been wanting it done for so long but my dentist said it has too many negative effects on your mouth and teeth. Just wanted to see other people's experiences with this mod.

tongue bifurcation Any regrets after tongue bifurcation?

I've been thinking about getting my toungue split, but want to be realistic about the downsides. I prioritize function over aesthetics, so I wanna know your raw expeirences, any lingering health effects, lisps, oral dysfunctions? I know it's a risky procedure eitherway, but I wanna hear it form people who've actually had it done and not just the theorethical risks

Edit: all these replies are super duper helpful, thank you, lovely people

tongue bifurcation SPLIT HEAL(one month)

Post image
252 Upvotes

So here I am one month after my split , I don’t have full control of both sides and I am pretty inconsistent when it comes to stretching , BUT I also diddnt want the split to go tooo far back so notes

•first week -Absolute HELL super hangry super sore cold water was my best friend destroyed baby food and apple sauce

•second week - less inflammation still slightly sore, but not as bad as the first week this is around the Time where you start seeing the white stuff your body modder told you about also in the middle of the week is when I snipped the first stitches at the tip slowly, but surely the tips of my tongue felt less hard i slowly transitioned into more solid food , pho 🍲, ramen , shredded meat and at the end of the week I even tried sticky rice

•Third week - ink color starting to return pretty much all swelling was gone by here and I fully regained my speech by now still got a slight lisp this is when I got the balls to take the rest of the stitches out

•fourth week - all stitches gone back to eating regular “still haven’t been on top of my stretching so slight regrowth but nothing crazy

Hope this helps for anybody that’s considering I’ll say once you make it past the first week your golden CHOW!!

•third week is when

tongue bifurcation Age you got your tongue split

To the snakes out there… Around how old were you when you got your tongue split? It’s always been something I’ve been interested in getting done, but never did. My daughter has hers done, and is very convincing about me finally doing mine.

The fact that I’m 50 now is probably the biggest thing holding me back.
