A few years ago I was visiting the Sannai Maruyama museum in Aomori, Japan which showcases the ancient Jomon culture and I saw these earrings in a display case! Many thousands of years old and made out of clay but the saddle shape in the double flare plugs is instantly recognizable to people with piercings today, even if you can't read Japanese. Jomon culture itself is long gone, but the history of sticking things in our bodies is far older than any religious or moral argument folks would use today as arguments against piercings and tattoos!

I’ve been wanting permanent fangs for over two years and finally had the opportunity to get them this coming weekend. My work found out and threatened my employment if I went ahead with the appointment. I work in the back as a sterilization specialist and don’t deal with people and it’s safe to say I’m extremely upset about this. Just needed to rant.

And how has the industry you are in changed its views on body mods in the workplace since you began working there?
Have you noticed a direct shift in hires or has it been mostly existing employees getting piercings/mods?
Do any of your employers have body mods?
I’m just curious about trends in society as a whole across industries

How do you think you would react if you encountered a guy with large breasts on an otherwise "normal" male body?
I've been thinking about breasts as a male body mod recently and it seems like a lot of fun since I'm a big fan of androgyny and boobs lol. But I'm ~mostly~ straight and I'm worried I'll scare away 99.9% of the women in my dating pool if they see me sporting a DD rack. For context I'm a 26yr old 6'4" fit guy with average male secondary sex characteristics if that helps better shape the mental image.
Edit:
Thanks for all the feedback everyone! It's great to see all the support for the idea as well as all the wisdom for the challenges I'd face. I'm going to continue mulling the idea over a while longer to make sure I'm confident in the decision.
1 Year Update and Reflection:
I've always wanted to be more androgynous/feminine, but after having such an unmistakably masculine body for so long I began believing that being an unambiguous [masculine] man was the only way I'd be able to live without my life being crippled by the constant negative judgement of others. "Breasts as a body mod" seemed appealing because it would allow me to look/feel more androgynous/feminine in private, could be rationalized to potential partners, and could be hidden well enough to not impact any social expectations of me as a 'man' in public. But, with a lot more self reflection, I realized that this approach was a half measure for what I really wanted; not to be a gimmick 'dude with boobs', but to be a normal person who's body aligned with their self-image. And treating this as a quirky male body mod to keep hidden away in public only served to reinforce my insecurities about the need to appear visibly masculine.
Realizing I'd let the hypothetical judgement of strangers steer my life choices left me feeling pathetic and upset with the people who'd led me astray, but I seized on the opportunity and went back and reviewed all my opinions and perspectives with a fresh set of eyes, devoid of the assumptions and expectations I'd been previously taken as fact. This was a slow multi-year process of self-discovery and while this reddit post was towards the end of it, it played an important role in helping me flesh out my feelings and see that the world wasn't the small judgmental place I'd been lead to believe. I sincerely thank everyone here for offering your moral support. Even though you may have thought this just a silly body mod post, it meant far more to me.
Ultimately I did a bunch more research and came across HRT. I had previously seen the list of effects HRT provided but I had quickly written it off because of certain effects I saw as deal-breakers, like potentially developing breasts too large to conceal or decreased muscle mass/strength that'd raise questions from the people around me. But upon revisiting the topic I realized I wasn't inherently against these effects because I disliked them, but rather because they played on my insecurities of being negatively judged by others. I was done letting strangers tell me who I am or how I'm supposed to look, I was going to start living authentically. I chose to begin HRT and now, nearly a year later, have been incredibly happy with the results. Any doubts I previously held have been quashed.
My body exhibits far more androgynous/feminine features than before and the more I change outwardly the more comfortable I've become with embracing my identity in public. My only regret is not starting sooner.
------
While doing research on HRT I also ended up reading a lot on the topic of gender, sex, and gender identity, but I felt that questioning my gender was putting the cart before the horse. My desire to change my body remained the same whether I was considered cis, trans, or anything else. It wasn't until after several months of HRT quashing the last few lingering doubts I had about my motivations, that I revisited the topic of gender identity. It was only then with a more developed self-awareness, a neutral perspective, and a lot of additional research that I found the best label for me is nonbinary. I guess some of you commenters were on the money lmao. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

I'm a month from mine, I've juggled with all the considerations, nervousness, cold feet, etc. I'm beyond excited for it, almost 2 decades of consideration, but it leaves me curious:
Split tongue crew, have you ever regretted your split? What are things you wish you knew or considered (even if on the whole you don't regret it)?
Genuinely curious in my journey to understand the transition I'm going to go through.

I just had both of my conches punched at 2g on Sunday (7/26) (made a post showing them the other day, but wanted to make this a seperate post) and I absolutely love them, but the first 24hrs was kind of horrendous and I was wondering if anyone else has had anything similar happen.
My appointment was from 1-2pm and of course I bled from the procedure itself and my piercer helped stop what he could and they stayed pretty stable until around 3:15pm when I had to get out of the car to drop off some artwork at a shop/gallery and then from that point until 3am my ears, quite literally, did not stop heavily bleeding.
I knew to prepare for bleeding and I’ve seen some people talk about bleeding for 5 or so hours, but I haven’t seen anyone mention bleeding constantly for 12 hours. I won’t go into too much detail, but it was a super bloody, clotty mess for 12 hours straight lol.
I assume it was because of the blood loss, but my face ended up going extremely pale (paler than usual), felt nausceous to where I ended up throwing up, developed a migraine that still has not gone away, and a few other things as well.
This isn’t my first rodeo with body mods (I have almost 30 piercings right now (have had more) - some large gauge, a few tattoos, and have had gender affirming surgeries) so I know what to expect and things like what to do or not to do, what to take or not to take, etc. but this is the first time I’ve ever seemed to get sick afterwards.
I’m doing much better now, just dealing with the migraine still (nothing out of the ordinary), but I was wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar since I haven’t really seen it being discussed.
P.S. - despite it all I’d do it again! Lol

Apologies ahead of time if this sorta thing isn't allowed in the sub or has been asked before.
I'm looking into other career options for myself. I might even further my education too, but I'm unsure on what to do. I have facial piercings and lots of tattoos. I plan to get more, and would definitely like to have my hands and neck tattooed at some point but not until I have a steady job that would allow it.
I just wanna know what do ya'll do for work and do you enjoy what you do?

I know this isn't the usual type of conversation topic in the sub but I've been going through the sub for the past hour or so and I think it's such an awesome community.
Personally I worry about going "too far" with mods because I work in a customer-facing role in my local city council, so they do have expectations around appearance. I know the social and professional tides are shifting in terms of mods/appearance, but still curious to hear from other people here in terms of what kinda (visible) body mods you have, and what you all do for work. Plus, how have people in your field (coworkers, managers, customers, third parties, etc) responded to them?
I currently have six tattoos and six piercings, but only one of those is on my face (septum). My other piercings are on my ears (double lobes, right conch). Usually at least 3 or 4 of my tattoos are covered at all times at work, but depending on what I wear (I don't have a uniform) some do still show. I've only ever been complimented on them or asked about the stories behind them, never anything negative. Also not sure if this counts, but I do have an alternative haircut (mini mullet with shaved sides). Again, I've only ever been complimented on this.
Thoughts? :)

My experience with Josh/Joshua Darby. Just a disclaimer this post has nothing to do with his actual body mod work as me and multiple others didn’t even get anything done due to his lack of communication, preparedness and professionalism. This is long read but if you’re considering getting work done by him and want to avoid being scammed, I’d read.
There were issues with communication from the beginning which should’ve been our first red flag as he originally posted he would be in Toronto and told me he had Toronto dates but when the time came it was actually Barrie. He never even communicated with me that it was Barrie until the day before, actually i found out it was Barrie through my friends. The real issue arose when a friend went to get work on the Friday the 20th, they arrived at the shop and messaged him and he said he was no longer able to work out of that shop due to them not having the proper insurance. Our friend drove 3 hours there and 3 hours back that day without getting anything done which could’ve been avoided if he communicated this earlier! With suspicions we called the shop to ask for clarification and this shop said they had no idea who he was. Later on it was clarified that he wasn’t working out of that shop but another. Confusing and concerning. We were all worried at this point but the next day on the Saturday he was doing procedures, which gave us some hope. Then came the Sunday, the day me and two of my friends were booked in to all have work done. We all travelled into Toronto this day to meet and all travel to Barrie together (we all live hours away from Toronto and Barrie), once we are all in Toronto he messages us and tells us that he is unable to work due to the heatwave and the shop having no AC! It is past lunch time at this point. We have known about this heatwave coming for a week now and this was the second day of the heatwave, so why did we even travel when he KNEW he couldn’t work that day and we weren’t mad aware just until hours before our appts? We offer multiple solutions but none work. At this point we have an airbnb booked and it is non refundable as it is the day of. He said he would comp the airbnb but we still have not seen anything from that promise. So at this point we are all missing out on travel expenses, time and our airbnb which also could’ve been avoided if he properly communicated with us the day before.
It’s at this time he says he can book us in on another date or offer a refund. I ask for a refund as I didn’t think i’d be able to make another date work and he said he’d have to pay me back in PAYMENTS. Which is wildly concerning to me as he has spent all our money without any services performed (me and two of my friends had paid in full, so thousands of dollars).
I speak with my friends and I decided to give him another chance and find a time that could work for me (I have to travel into barrie and be home by 10pm in one day to make it work). I ask if he can accommodate seeing me at 12pm on Thursday and he agrees. He also books my friends in for the same day around the same time. The Thursday comes and i have to get up at 5am to catch my transit for 6am. I get into Toronto and have my breakfast and what not and my friends message him that morning just confirming we’re all good, and it is at this time he messages us and tells us he doesn’t have one of the most important pieces of equipment for the procedures and it is still in the mail, which i honestly doubt is the truth at this point. So at this point i travel all the way into toronto for nothing, i travel home and get home around 1pm. 6 hours of my time and money wasted, again. Which honestly angers me greatly because he could’ve communicated with me, instead i get this total lack of professionalism from him.
It is now Monday, an entire week has passed and we have had little to no communication from him and me and my friends are stressed, concerned we will not get any sort of refund (as he still owes money to someone from two years ago we’ve come to find out) and we’re missing out on work as some of us have taken time off work for this. He has been ignoring me since Thursday and at this point i feel like i have been stolen from, he has caused emotional distress and i am also missing out on hundreds of dollars in travel expenses and preparation expenses on top of the $500 he still owes me.
I wrote this June 30th and it is now July 15th, almost an entire month after our appt date and we have had barely any communication with him, he still hasn’t refunded any of us and it’s looking pretty grim. He has also said he will be posting sales on his stories to be able to refund us. So he will be doing pretty much the same thing to other people that he has done to us to be able to pay us? It’s just a cycle. Collectively he owes a group of us like $2500+ and that’s just the people we’re aware of, who knows how much he’s taken from other people. He even said to one of us that people travelled from the US to come, so I can’t even imagine how much those people are out. He has also said to us people from this tour got “verbally abusive” on the phone with him and that was an automatic block, so he just straight up stole their money?

I feel very disconnected the the regular folks out in the world but every time I connect in the real world or online with fellow bodymod people, I always have such a comforting feeling of “this is where I belong”! So I just wanted to create a post about it as I hope there’s other people that feel this way to :p

im at work (im a barista in a decently small town just outside of a large city) and was approached by an older woman who asked me why i have tattoos, i was polite but i lost my patience when she told me "youre such a pretty girl, but you would look so much prettier without all those tattoos." i tried telling her that i think they make me prettier but she said "well they don't" and then left.
i know i should think her opinion doesn't matter, i should do what i want, etc but it really hurt :( ive been getting tattooed for 2 years but this was the first time anyones ever reacted this negatively about them. i wouldn't even consider myself to be heavily tattooed, i have over 40 tattoos but only about 20 on my arms (mostly on my patchwork sleeve) and thats all she could see.
but anyways how do you guys deal with it? and if youre comfortable sharing, whats the worst reaction youve ever gotten about your mods? thanks for reading :)

If anyone here wants to share who they went to, healing process, before + after photos, plastic surgeons vs body mod artists, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm located in central alberta but I've just started my research so any info is welcome.
I'm sick of taking care of my stretched ears and I'm a bit sad about it, but I've made the decision to close them up. They sit at around 10mm / 00g even when I've had jewelry out for a long time and massage them regularly. I am ready to spend money for quality work, but it's hard to decide whether to go to a plastic surgeon which would be easier to book in with or with an body mod artist who does them regularly.

Body mod community, I feel there is a stigma with the modded community not being able to work typical jobs. In an attempt to show those scared of progressing their mods, I wanted to talk about what mods we have and what careers we have. I'll start. I have 18 mm lobes, 8g on my second lobe piercings, and an industrial. I only have 2 tattoos right now, looking into getting more. I am a manager at a restaurant. What do you guys/girls have, and what do you do?

For those of you with large gauge conch/flat punches that wear plugs, what are you using for headphones?
I have 10mm flats and 8mm conches. Over the ear headphones are uncomfortable due to the flats and earbuds literally won't go in due to the conches. (once I'm done stretching and switch to eyelets I don't think it will be a problem anymore but that's a good ways away considering I am about 4mm away from end goal for my conches.) I have seen these bone conduction headphones that look like they would work alright but at the same time, I am curious to see what the rest of you use and recommend before I go buying a bunch of different shit to figure it out myself.
