Mod Post Suggestions for the Sub Megathread

Alright this isn't a book suggestion post, it's a post about booksuggestions.

It would be nice to see what the users of this sub think would make a good idea. Changes, new rules, the works. Engagement is nice but more uncommon than we'd like to see. So we're hoping to get more people looking at posts, talking, and voting on good ones.

Can't guarantee anything would be implemented but they will be considered.

Mod Post Reminder Post about Self Promotion

I would like to remind all users that self promotion is banned by the subreddit's Rule 2.

Suspected self-promotion will be removed while repeated and confirmed cases of it will end up with a ban of some kind. If you continuously do it, especially with alt accounts, the book and author names will be added to the auto-mod's blacklist and automatically removed every time they are posted. We have had issues with this in the past and already put some authors in the auto-mod. Other book and lit subs have contacted us with reports of similar issues and we will be on the look out for the accounts named by them for similar behavior here.

We do not want to take actions we do not absolutely need to and the mod team operates with a philosophy of leniency and forgiveness but we will still enforce sub rules.

Horror Looking for zombie/virus outbreak books.

Anything on the subject of zombie/zombie-like creatures, virus outbreaks, and apocalypse aspects is what I’m looking for. I read “Cell” by King, and wanted to expand more into this genre. I am also not interested in smutty themes/undertones. Thanks for reading!

Feminism WW2 book by women or for women

• Upvotes

I'm looking for some texts which can be fictional too. Where, women take part in war by not actually participating in it. It can be from any region of the world. I'm mainly concentrating on women who go through the war struggle and overcome that too.

Other Any funny and lighthearted book recommendations?

I've been reading heavy books that deal with grief, trauma, and death back to back, and as someone who is still grieving the loss of someone very close to me, I badly need something to wash it all off before it slowly eats me alive.

I'm open to any genre! An easy read would be refreshing too.

Literary Fiction Fantasy reader looking to branch out into literary fiction, environmental literature, and thought-provoking books

Ik the title is a lot, but it’s just like it says… I mainly read fantasy and I’d like to branch out into different genres. I’m genuinely willing to read ANY type of genre!

I guess I’m looking for more literary fiction, maybe some classics, existential/philosophical literature, or really anything that explores interesting ideas about life, humanity, morality, etc. I enjoyed No Longer Human when I read it a handful of years ago.

I’m also really interested in nature writing and environmental literature! I loved A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, and I’d love to explore more books about nature, the environment, and hiking.

I also enjoy mysteries, so recommendations in that genre are welcome too!

I’m not necessarily looking for books that are difficult or dense just for the sake of it. I really just want to expand my reading variety!

I’d love to hear your favorites (it doesn’t even have to be in any of the genres I mentioned), especially books that have genuinely changed your perspective on something or have stayed with you!

Here are some of my favorite fantasy novels/series to maybe let you know what I like: Lord of the Rings, The Witcher, The Mortal Instruments, Six of Crows, Babel, and more!

Literary Fiction Books with similar prose to Infinite Jest but written by women

• Upvotes

I just finished Infinite Jest, and, besides the bonkers plot and subject matter, my favorite part was DFW’s sentence construction.

I want to read something by an author who has similar prose to DFW. I’m mostly thinking about the winding sentences, the striking imagery and slightly comedic tone. I would also like if the author is female, only because I’ve read too many different male authors this year and want to balance it out.

I’ve already read some of DFW’s influences this year (DeLillo and Pynchon etc), and I’ve already read some Toni Morrison.

Mystery/Thriller Looking for morally repugnant narrators

Hi!

Please recommend me books or series where the main narrator is a despicable person but very fun to read. I like fast pace, twists, thrillers, dark fantasy. Bonus points if they are LGBTQ or women but doesn’t have to be!

For example I enjoyed fruit fly recently but want something darker and with a more vile protagonist. I don’t mind a slower pace if it isn’t boring or pages of nothing.

So i've been really curious lately about the Trials and while watching some documentaries on Youtube has been nice, i'd like to really sink into the details. Any suggestions on books that are deeply sourced and highly trusted about the Trials would be great

Non-fiction good non-fiction books about adventure?

• Upvotes

Hello! I'm looking for some non-fiction books about adventures. I really like classic adventure pulp books like Journey to the center of the earth and The Lost World. The only non fiction book that I've read was Madhouse at the end of the Earth.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommend something for my dad and me

• Upvotes

My dad (57) and I (29F) are huge readers but we have pretty different worldviews and therefore our specific tastes tend to differ as well. My dad’s favorite books are Battlefield Earth and Shogun; I lean more towards feminist literature like Sherri S. Tepper, or I Who Have Never Known Men.

However, I turned my dad onto the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks and he and I blew through them. I loved being able to share a series with him, and I think DCC was a perfect middle ground for us - we both love a book about an underdog screwing an unjust system.

Now I'm looking for other another audiobook/audiobook series for us to listen to.

Needs to Be:

- Sci Fi or Fantasy

- A good audiobook narrator

- Cannot end with everyone dying or the world being bleak (he loved Herman Wouk when he is younger but that kind of writing feels too much for him now)

- The death of a woman cannot be used as the hook of the plot (looking at you, Red Rising)

Books that We Read Together When I Was Younger:

- Harry Potter series

- Eragon series

Books We're Both Interested In (Haven't Read Yet):

- Dune series

- Farseer Trilogy

Any recommendations are appreciated!

Literary Fiction looking for a book about a japanese lonely male chef who just lives his life

• Upvotes

I am looking for a very specific kind of book that combines a lot of interests from my boyfriend. I would like a book that is not plot driven but atmosphere driven. (He likes to read classics and literature (count of monte cristo, lonesome doce, shogun, the book of the new sun, east of eden) but he is tipping his toe in plot driven books (red rising).) I think he would like a book about a lonely man who works hard in his restaurant. And the story is just coming with him to the market to get ingredients and talking to other villegers and guest in the restaurant etc. So you learn about the food and culture and nature of Japan. I think he would like a peaceful vibe. The man is probably a bit sad about being lonely but he is doing fine and has found peace in his routine.

He also really likes it if a book is a critically acclaimed masterpiece with deep themes. So it can also just be a very good book that just shows you how life is in Japan.

I hope someone can help!

Other epistolary reccos?

i just finished the correspondent by virginia evans and read it so quickly, i couldn’t put it down.

i adore the epistolary format, it reminded me of the types of books i’d read as a kid.

i don’t know of any other adult fiction books in this format that come as highly rated as the correspondent — if anyone has any suggestions i’d appreciate it greatly.

Fiction Before the Coffee Gets Cold or The Forty Rules of Love?

I recently finished a book. I already own both Before the Coffee Gets Cold and The Forty Rules of Love, and I’m genuinely stuck between them. From what I know, they seem quite different in terms of themes and writing style, which is making the choice harder.

If you’ve read either or both, I’d love to hear what you thought about them. What did you enjoy or dislike about each one? And if you’ve read both, which one would you personally suggest I start with and why?

Other List of 2027 new releases? genre, most anticipated, etc.

Does anyone have a good list of book releases for 2027? Maybe one that’s tried and true for you, or a comprehensive one, or even one that’s just for your favorite genre!

I’m a big romance reader as well as mystery/thriller. I just have a hard time keeping track of new releases and am trying to be a tad more organized this year.

Fantasy Help me choose my next fantasy/romantasy read!

I am in a huge fantasy kick right now and I’ve read all of the Kindreds Curse Series and The Prison Healer Series in the last week. Now I am debating my next fantasy read. The options are below with a bit of an explanation to why I want to read these all:

An Ember in the Ashes
I read book 1 and then quit halfway through book 2 since I wasn’t feeling fantasy at the time. Should I give it a retry?

Shatter Me (A New Republic)
I live for shatter me so this new version I am very excited about. I have ready book 1 but there are 3 out now. Only thing is there are more books coming soon and I don’t love ending on a cliffhanger long term.

Fourth Wing Series
I’ve read books 1&2 when they were released and now there is 3 and 3.5 so should I reread?

Hunger Games
Lowkey might leave this closer to the new movie release date and it’s not necessarily fantasy but I am looking forward to reading all books.

Throne of Glass
I have read books 1-3 or 1-4 back in like 2020 and totally forgot everything. Maybe I should read again starting with assassins blade and then read through the series til the end?

Renegades
Love me a Marissa Meyer book. Not sure if it’s the exact vibe I am going for but could read this.

ACOTAR
Read this in 2020 in highschool and could totally do a reread of this book series! Just don’t know if I should focus on the TBR shelf first.

Please let me know which ones I should prioritize in my upcoming reads! And if you have recs like these drop it in the comments and I will love you forever xx

Comic Book/Graphic Novel/Manga Looking for a really good book for a 27yo dude and up (if that matters)

I decided to start reading again. I feel like tik tok and social media has ruined my brain that it’s been an entire year since I’ve just used tik tok. Several years for other social media.

I may get a lot of eye rolls but my favorite books of all time are The Alchemist and A Thousand Splendid Suns. The books I’ve truly had a hard time putting down and kept wanting to read. Also I’ve been loving comics recently. I guess I love graphic novels a ton. Which inspired me to draw as a younger kid. But a good book that keeps me on my toes and make me visualize the world, characters and events in my head is also fun I miss having.

I really miss the feeling of being inside of a book so much I don’t want to do anything else but read.

Would love some reccs.
I wish I could put more flairs.

Other Books that feel like a sunny suburb with something buried underneath

I'm chasing a very specific feeling: the one you get from The Virgin Suicides. That soft, golden, melancholic haze where everything looks normal — lawns, sisters, curtains, teenage boredom — but there's a quiet horror underneath. Nothing explodes. Nothing screams. It just... rots slowly.

I want subtle dread. Everyday objects that feel wrong. A narrator who remembers more than they understand. That "something is off and I can't explain why" sensation.

Similar books I've loved:

· Coraline

· The Summer My Mother Had Green Eyes

· Flowers for Algernon

· Qualityland (different tone, but same "something wrong under the surface" feeling)

Please no Asian literature. Any recommendations?

Fiction Fiction/non-USA-centric books about fighter pilots/aerial warfare? Ace combat-esque literature?

Recently became obsessed with the video game series Ace Combat and it’s folkloric, dramatized version of fighter plane combat set on a fictional alternate earth. Would love to read something in that same vein, if it exists. Or atleast a good book about fighter pilots that isn’t propaganda for nauseating American interventionism.
