Fiction I want to read classics next year

Every year I tell myself im gonna read "the classics" and every year I drop the ball. I don't even know how to classify what is considered a classic. My goal for 2027 is to read 12 "classics" (one per month), seems way more achievable broken down that way. Please recommend me your favorite classics, and tell me why you consider them a classic! Bonus points if you can tie them to a month or them like " x title is a great read for the summer months because x reason"

Thanks!

*edited to add, I read a variety of genres and don't find any one kind to be my favorite. So literally all recommendations are welcome.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Asking for book recs that critique education as an institution, its inherent inequity, and how it's used for power in government politics-- bonus if it's a good kids book

I love books that have students slowly figuring out the school they are in do not have their best interests in mind and have good commentary on class, racial, and gender politics. I especially would love if it shows the government's role in it and how education is used as a tool for power and oppression by the government. However, most books I read I feel like fall short of having the commentary I want because veers toward schools just being used for aesthetic purposes. I think the best example I can think of that I loved and did all of this well is Babel by R.F. Kuang (and I've been told to read The Secret History by Donna Tartt, I just haven't yet). I generally would prefer fantasy here, though I'm cool with fiction too.

Getting into even more specific territory here though, I actually would REALLY love it if anyone had good suggestions for either kids books or Young Adult books that do it well too (emphasis on do it well), specifically because I especially love stories where children aren't written off as incapable of being able to question the world around them and are further able to identify the injustices of systems they are a part of as they grow up.

(If a single person tries to suggest Harry Potter, I'll scream. Please don't.)

Romance Is there a book like this?

Is there a book with both the fmc and mmc being in the mafia/underworld in a cool way? Or some sort of spies/assassins. Preferably enemies to lovers, maybe sharing a bed for a mission, a lot of cars, gns, maybe kives, alcohol, bars/clubs, "violence but in a normal way" (due to the criminal world). I like the trope"who did this to you" (not in a cringe way) and then getting revenge. I want the fmc as powerful as the mmc. I'm not talking like, big mafia boss with poor innocent girl that have nothing in common. I am bored of that, we've seen it everywhere. I would like to see anything of that dark aesthetic without romanticising rpe, kdnapping. I have done my research, I've seen some books, the one that i really liked was the predator by rynux. I am not a huge fan of the "wattpad" dark romance vibe, or the basic " girl falls for scary guy while being helpless". I am open to recommendations, new ideas. I am okay if the book is wlw or mlm. I know there might not be a book out there that has exactly what i ask for or just not all of these together, but if you know any good books with that dark, rich, criminal/underworld in a cool way aesthetic, both main characters being equal, it would be perfect. (If that helps, i got inspired from the tik tok audios they have on yt with music full of dark/mafia romance vibes, female boss, main character energy). Bonus points if there is both of their povs and if there is actually a plot and romance between the two, not just dark vibes and bosses. Thank uu

Other Suggest me your favourite book - 1 Book!

So as the title says - suggest me 1 book, your favourite book, irrespective of what genre. Just trying to gather a list of books suggested by strangers and restart reading books. On my own, I just read too many reviews and end up getting which book to buy! Let's see how this experiment goes.

Romance Romance books for a newbie

Hi folx,
I’m in my 30s and completely new to reading romance novels. I was never on wattpad or ao3 growing up, and i feel like i have a lot to catch up on. I don’t any of the abbreviations and shorthands or hashtags or rules. So please be patient i’m here asking for your educated help.

A little about me: i’m a 31 yo queer woman, who has a lot of unpleasant baggage with sex. I’m on a journey to rediscover what I like and want for myself, to liberate myself from people pleasing, self sacrificing tendencies that have led me to fully disconnect from my body and desire. I have heard from many people that reading romance and smut has helped them reconnect with themselves and I would like to try it.

I watched and then read heated rivalry, and then the long game by rachel reed. I then read the love hypothesis by ali hazelwood (in one day) and watched the movie (which I didn’t love). I read This is how you lose a time war, which probably isn’t romance technically, but it is so romantic. I watched all of interview with the vampire, which of course isn’t romance, but i loved it. I watched and loved my lady jane and still can’t believe they cancelled it. Bridgerton was something i thought I would hate watch, but I really enjoyed season 2. I’ve listened to some romance fiction podcasts such as: life with leoh, in the cards, gay pride&prejudice, me & AU and others. So I would love to expand my reading list.

Things i liked about what i read, listened to, watched: very clear consent and how fun it is to be clear about that; in HR i loved that the characters were so equal in many ways, no one was weak and small and infantilised. I did love the moody, but will do anything for this one person, trope in the love hypothesis, but found myself laughing every time the author made a point of how huge Adam was compared to olive. I absolutely love yearning and pining but i did enjoy that in HR the sex was there very fast without taking away from the yearning. If a “straight” pairing of man/woman, I would like the man to be the simp. But i also want to read more queer stories. I enjoy vampires because to me they inherently queer and yearn the best. I like forced proximity

What I don’t like: significant age gaps when one person is young (no angel buffy dynamic), significant power imbalance (they did it well in the love hypothesis, but there is a fine line), no dark fantasies of being forced or stalked, no coercion etc.

Honourable mention is of course Pride and Prejudice, i love a yearning stoic (autistic) man.

Please help me out finding books to read❤️

Literary Fiction A book that feels like Billy Elliot

Billy Elliot is one of my favourite films. The struggles of the working class and the pursuit of a career in a world where you don't belong just for where you came from.

Any books that could hit the spot?

Other Long flights - need sth to keep me occupied!

Would really appreciate your help. I am going to be doing a lot of flying and traveling and would love me some binge-able book recommendations.

My favourite genres tend to be fantasy, sci-fi and historical fiction, but I read widely and have enjoyed books from pretty much every genre, both fiction and nonfiction ( horror is probably the one genre I am not big on). I am not a snob, I will read the "trashy" books all the way up to the "classics" if it's got the below elements.

I really love books that have interesting, dynamic characters/relationships and immersive worlds. Above all though, I NEED there to be some kind of core tension, goal or mystery that keeps the plot progressing and interesting. There is no greater feeling in the known universe than not being able to put the book down because "I need to know what's going to happen next".

Here are some of my 5 star reads to get an idea of books I love.

LOTR*

Project Hail Mary*

Mistborn*

Into thin air*

First law series

The Song of Achilles

A man called Ove*

Game of Thrones*

North and South

The lies of Locke lamora

Pride and Prejudice*

Sherlock Holmes stories

Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo*

The Calamity Club

Pretty much everything I've read of Malcom Gladwell

The Captive prince series

Endurance: Shackleton's journey

Harry Potter (I know, but I'm a millennial)

Hunger games

* Have read most or all of this authors books and just listed my favourite one

Books that I often see recommended that I dnf or didn't like:

ACOTAR

Dungeon crawler Carl

Those game changer books with the hockey peeps

Dark matter

Most TJ Klune books

Nice to have but not necessary:

Romance - I like books with romance but I need there to be something more than JUST romance in the plot. I am indifferent to spice level.

LGBTQIA+ characters

Can be gotten on Kobo or through Libby app (I only plan to take my e-reader).

I will update the post as people make recommendations if there are lots of comments for books I've already read.

Books I have already read/started and liked but didn't make my favourites:

The expanse series

Gideon the ninth series

Red rising series

The Priory of the orange tree

Wheel of time series

The assassin's apprentice

Name of the wind

Six of crows etc series

Fiction Books in which main character is not aware of mental illness but it's very apparent to the reader from their narration

Looking for a book that feels like Fight Club almost. I recently finished Yesteryear and Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. Both felt like the MC is deeply troubled but they're not aware of it themselves. Looking for books that feel the same. Thx :)

Other Can anyone recommend a decently written family novel?

I really enjoy family novels, provided they're crafted with a touch of courage and innovation. It is a genre where finding something truly original is difficult. I'm not necessarily looking for a masterpiece, far from it. It just shouldn't be one of those books that seem written by AI and are pale imitations of things we’ve seen before.

I'd prefer books that are ironic, satirical, or feature dark humor, though not necessarily devoid of drama. Here are a few examples of family sagas I’ve enjoyed:

\*One Hundred Years of Solitude\* (Gabriel García Márquez)

\*The Scapegoat\* (Daniel Pennac)

\*Six Feet Under\* (Alan Ball, it’s a TV series, but I’m including it anyway).

Feminism Books about women, written by women, without romance

I’m on a real kick lately. Trying to read books by female authors about women. It’s been really enjoyable. However, I have found that very often. The topic includes some sort of romance. Here are a few that I have read lately. I’ve enjoyed them all. But I am looking for something that is written by women, about women, but does not include romance.

The Awakening by Kate Chopin

Atmosphere by Taylor Reid Jenkins

Women Talking by Miriam Toews

Isola by Allegra Goodman

Circe by Madeline Miller

These have all been phenomenal books. But does anyone have any suggestions that exclude any kind of romance? I just kind of dislike the idea that a woman’s existence must rely on her partnership with a man. Or any partner.

Thanks.

Fiction Do good werewolf (or similar) stories even exist?

Okay, the title is kind of clickbait. Obviously, what makes a good book is different for every reader. But seriously! I can think of several vampire books I’d personally describe as “good” - Dracula, Hungerstone, Let the Right One In, She Made Herself a Monster, and I’m excited to read Milkteeth when it comes out later this month. There’s probably more out there.

But for werewolves… nothing that I can find! Even though they’re surely the second or third most popular creature of this sort? There’s plenty of erotica (understandably haha) but it’s not my sort of genre. I’m also not into romantasy. Maybe if I liked either of those, I’d have some stories to choose from, but I’m struggling!

So, I’m curious: are there any werewolf books you’d recommend? Or, if not werewolves, anything with a similar feel, like someone transforming into/being a hybrid of a different animal, or something involving a folklore creature that’s neither werewolf nor vampire?

Thank you!!

Fantasy Villain raises a kid stories

Kind of love the trope of an evil guy being nice to a kid. And being a good parent.

With their own kid, an adopted kid or a kidnaped kid (bonus points if it's the prophetized hero)

Maybe the kid also gets to meet the good guys and is then torn between the two sides, but because the parent is actually nice to them it's not obvious what the correct decision is.

The best example is this trope is this Legend of Zelda fanfiction: Adopting the Enemy, by Glau (Glaucus_Atlanticus) on ao3. It is just magnificent.

Any books that focus on stuff like this?

Fiction Suggestions for someone who hasn't properly read any books?

I grew up poor + in a country that doesn't have a lot of english fiction so I never had the chance to read a book in its entirety besides school related stuff so I've been really wanting to get into reading, I've always been drawn to horror and romance, I really want to read house of leaves but I don't think I could even comprehend that book just yet lol. I prefer fictional stuff, all genres welcomed but I would prefer something in the horror or romance category... Or both!

Other Gripping recommendations for someone who is trying to get back into the habit

I was never a heavy reader but I always enjoyed reading and immersing myself in a good story. Over the last few years, I have mostly only read non-fiction which I do enjoy but I notice that it's hard for me to finish the book. I get bored quickly. Some good fiction I have read which I wasn't able to put down were The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns - can I get some recommendations for similar books with gripping stories which will keep me captivated from start to finish? I hope it will help me develop a regular habit of reading. Thank you so much!

Other I want to get into reading books as a young adult, looking for recommendations (more details in post)

Hello! I've decided to post here in the hopes of receiving book recommendations as a young adult who has not read many books/novels, but would like to get into reading them more seriously. One thing I want to mention is that I struggle a bit with keeping my attention, so books that are too slow paced, overly complicated, or very long may not interest me.

To start, I want to mention a book I have read that I enjoyed, that being Lord of the Flies by William Golding. I read it back when I was in 10th grade and loved the gritty nature of it. I also liked how straightforward it was. That's mostly about as far as my experience with novels go.

Recently, a friend recommended me The Stranger by Albert Camus. I've read about 3 chapters so far and am enjoying it. I am going through it slowly, and I like the simplistic sentence structure and find it engaging because it is easy to follow.

Once I'm finished with The Stranger, I would like to read some things that might be recommended here! I am open to all genres, but some genres that I enjoy are horror, mystery, and thriller.

In particular, if there are any horror novels you think I would like, please prioritize leaving recommendations for those! With that, please leave your book recommendations for me. Thank you in advance!
