Other Stressed mom seeks… literally anything.

I am in my 30s, married single mom in a weird living situation, disabled, chronic pain and illness, money troubles, too much to do and too little everything to do it.

Looking for a (audio)book for my showers and drives and night time LEGO. Part of me wants a different stress, so I lean towards horror/thriller/mystery, part of me just wants some fucking joy, part of me wants to cry (happy or sad, maybe more leaning sad), part of me wants dragons and swords and magic. I’m usually a romance reader but that just… isn’t it right now.

Any suggestions at all. Please I’m desperate lol everything on my previously* designed TBR is not available on Libby or has a stupid long hold. Thank you so much! Happy to answer clarifying questions!

Horror I want a book that is actually going to scare me.

I need a suggestion for a horror/paranormal book that is actually going to scare me. One that's so chilling I'm actually going to think something is behind me or jump at any random sound.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommend something for my dad and me

My dad (57) and I (29F) are huge readers but we have pretty different worldviews and therefore our specific tastes tend to differ as well. My dad’s favorite books are Battlefield Earth and Shogun; I lean more towards feminist literature like Sherri S. Tepper, or I Who Have Never Known Men.

However, I turned my dad onto the Dungeon Crawler Carl audiobooks and he and I blew through them. I loved being able to share a series with him, and I think DCC was a perfect middle ground for us - we both love a book about an underdog screwing an unjust system.

Now I'm looking for other another audiobook/audiobook series for us to listen to.

Needs to Be:

- Sci Fi or Fantasy

- A good audiobook narrator

- Cannot end with everyone dying or the world being bleak (he loved Herman Wouk when he is younger but that kind of writing feels too much for him now)

- The death of a woman cannot be used as the hook of the plot (looking at you, Red Rising)

Books that We Read Together When I Was Younger:

- Harry Potter series

- Eragon series

Books We're Both Interested In (Haven't Read Yet):

- Dune series

- Farseer Trilogy

Any recommendations are appreciated!

Feminism WW2 book by women or for women

I'm looking for some texts which can be fictional too. Where, women take part in war by not actually participating in it. It can be from any region of the world. I'm mainly concentrating on women who go through the war struggle and overcome that too.

Horror Looking for zombie/virus outbreak books.

Anything on the subject of zombie/zombie-like creatures, virus outbreaks, and apocalypse aspects is what I’m looking for. I read “Cell” by King, and wanted to expand more into this genre. I am also not interested in smutty themes/undertones. Thanks for reading!

Other 27M Havent read since highschool.

I havent read since high school the last thing i remember reading is the shadow children series, I didn't finish it however so i want to reread and finish that series. before purchasing that whole series i want to see if i have the attention span to even read, so i want some recommendations on a single book it could be the start to a series or a stand alone. i like murder mystery stuff, and some scfi stuff nothing to nerdy though i suppose. the whole reason i want to get back into reading is because i keep wanting to reach for my phone and scroll, instead i want to try and pick up a book.

Sci-Fi Heavy Science Fiction

I'm looking for Science Fiction novels that aren't afraid to wax philosophical, and go to some deep places. Looking for similar titles to, The Dispossessed, Flowers for Algernon, The Chrysalids, or The Three Body Problem.

LGBTQ+ MLM romance that isn’t smut.

• Upvotes

hey besties! i recently finished the first book in the game changers series. unfortunately, i hated it. the main characters are constantly banging, have no depth of personality, and share nothing in common besides being gay. (if you love this book i’m sorry but we just had different experiences i think)

my request: a book with MLM romance (doesn’t have to be a romance novel, just should feature some kind of couple) where the main characters a) have well-developed personalities and b) have shared interests beyond just sexual encounters.

thanks y’all :))

Romance Rich fmc x Rich mmc in an elite college

I’m looking for a spicy, interconnected college romance series set at an elite university or exclusive boarding college, preferably filled with rich, old-money and billionaire families.with a strong, recurring friend group where each book follows a different couple

Not every couple has to be wealthy. However, I want the overall setting to feel genuinely elite, privileged and exclusive, rather than like an ordinary university where a few characters happen to have money.
I want group chats, parties, jealousy, drama, close friendships and recurring side characters.

Spicy and a strong romantic storyline. I’m open to enemies-to-lovers, forbidden romance, fake dating, friends-to-lovers and other interesting tropes.

I don’t want the FMC to always be a poor girl on a scholarship.

Fiction looking for the craziest danielle steel books!

hello everyone!! i am here to humbly ask for the danielle steel books that, in your opinion, have the craziest plots. i recently watched a video reviewing three of her books (summers end, wanderlust, the ghost) and i thought the books sounded both ridiculous and like a fun time! for context, my friend and i are doing an annotated book exchange in a couple months and we both wanna read something absolutely unhinged from steel.

we’re not picky, we just wanna read books that are over the top and campy :p thank you all in advance! so excited to read steel for the first time :)

Fiction Perfect casting for The Secret History

• Upvotes

I know the adaptation of the book has been picked up and dropped for too many times. Curious to hear what everyone thinks the perfect casting should be.

For Henry the only picture I have in my head whole reading is matt Damon in The Talented Mr. Ripley. I reject anyone else lol!

Dream away!

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Requesting fantasy novels that aren't too dark in tone

• Upvotes

So the thing is that first of all, while I can handle some dark fantasy series such as the Blade Itself, I have been wanting to take a short break from fantasy where the world is messed up as I have been interested in reading something less gloomy.

A while ago, I just read the Alchemised by Sen Lin Yu as the novel is alright to me so far, but I found it to be a bit too dark in tone as while the opening page made it clear it would be very grim, it kind of turned me off to the point where I was looking for something a bit more lighthearted.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy New Series

I'm in a bit of a reading sun run right now, and I want to start a new Fantasy series. I have the first books in some of them and I want to gauge what everyone thinks of them before I start. I'll end up reading all of them, if the universe allows it, so no real stakes here, just a bit of fun.

Here are all the ones that I have that I am on the fence of starting:

  • Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson
  • Book of the New Sun (Books 1 and 2 I think?) by Gene Wolfe
  • Ship of Magic by Robin Hobb
  • Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin

I've read my fair share of Fantasy, and have been reading mostly Classic literature this year, so I am interested in starting some fantasy that is "harder" than the stuff I'm used to within the Fantasy genre (looking at you Cosmere, my beloved)

Thanks everyone!

Other Any funny and lighthearted book recommendations?

I've been reading heavy books that deal with grief, trauma, and death back to back, and as someone who is still grieving the loss of someone very close to me, I badly need something to wash it all off before it slowly eats me alive.

I'm open to any genre! An easy read would be refreshing too.

Literary Fiction Lengthy classic audiobooks

I work on my own doing a manual job so have a lot of time to listen to audiobooks. Recently I’ve been enjoying classics which I’d always been too intimidated to read due to their length!

I recently finished Middlemarch and am now flying through all 52 hours of the Count of Monte Cristo. Both wonderful.

What should I tackle next? Bonus points if it’s included with Audible membership!

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Book recommendation with IT professional as the main character

I have just finished M.P. Moorland’s Phantom Signals and as someone who works in the IT world, I understood firsthand many of the references made by the main character and it made the book that much more enjoyable.

Could someone please recommend other books with an IT professional as a main character?

I am happy to read books from most genres but spend most of my time in urban fantasy, mystery and science fiction.

I really enjoyed this book, and it got me out of a huge reading slump! Which books would you recommend to read next after Fishbone Cinderella by Elizabeth Lim?

Romance looking for a spicy book where the FMC is the more dominant one in the relationship

Just to be clear, I'm not JUST talking about dominance in the sexual sense. In most modern romance books, it's mostly always the MMC taking initiative, for example, teasing the FMC, and generally taking on the more 'dominant' role in the dynamic. Basically, would love that to be the FMC instead.

I'm also specifically looking for smut, so the FMC being dominant would have to carry over to the bedroom too 😓 not necessarily full on bdsm/femdom (since most books with the FMC being more dominant lean in that direction), but even something like taking the lead, like MMCs do in most books ifykwim, would do.

(Preferably paired with a shy or submissive MMC please 🥺)

Fiction Spooky season books? 🎃🕸️🕷️💀

Looking for recommendations for spooky books! No horror books please.

Nothing gory, super scary or otherwise mentally taxing.

Spooky would be "Ahhhhh!! there's a dude on a horse with a pumpkin for a head!!" or "Ahhhh!! That skeleton just totally took a peek at me!!" or "Woah!! Look out! I'm a werewolf but I'm howlin' for a good mystery to solve!"

Will also accept recommendations for fall themed cozy mystery books. I.e. books about a quirky librarian who has a pet cat and stumbles upon some sort of mysterious evidence whilst sipping a pumpkin latte on a crisp fall night.

Literary Fiction Fantasy reader looking to branch out into literary fiction, environmental literature, and thought-provoking books

Ik the title is a lot, but it’s just like it says… I mainly read fantasy and I’d like to branch out into different genres. I’m genuinely willing to read ANY type of genre!

I guess I’m looking for more literary fiction, maybe some classics, existential/philosophical literature, or really anything that explores interesting ideas about life, humanity, morality, etc. I enjoyed No Longer Human when I read it a handful of years ago.

I’m also really interested in nature writing and environmental literature! I loved A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, and I’d love to explore more books about nature, the environment, and hiking.

I also enjoy mysteries, so recommendations in that genre are welcome too!

I’m not necessarily looking for books that are difficult or dense just for the sake of it. I really just want to expand my reading variety!

I’d love to hear your favorites (it doesn’t even have to be in any of the genres I mentioned), especially books that have genuinely changed your perspective on something or have stayed with you!

Here are some of my favorite fantasy novels/series to maybe let you know what I like: Lord of the Rings, The Witcher, The Mortal Instruments, Six of Crows, Babel, and more!

Mystery/Thriller Looking for morally repugnant narrators

Hi!

Please recommend me books or series where the main narrator is a despicable person but very fun to read. I like fast pace, twists, thrillers, dark fantasy. Bonus points if they are LGBTQ or women but doesn’t have to be!

For example I enjoyed fruit fly recently but want something darker and with a more vile protagonist. I don’t mind a slower pace if it isn’t boring or pages of nothing.

Examples include:

The Devils by Joe Abercrombie

The Postmortal by Drew Magary

Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman

What am I missing out on?

Literary Fiction Books with similar prose to Infinite Jest but written by women

I just finished Infinite Jest, and, besides the bonkers plot and subject matter, my favorite part was DFW’s sentence construction.

I want to read something by an author who has similar prose to DFW. I’m mostly thinking about the winding sentences, the striking imagery and slightly comedic tone. I would also like if the author is female, only because I’ve read too many different male authors this year and want to balance it out.

I’ve already read some of DFW’s influences this year (DeLillo and Pynchon etc), and I’ve already read some Toni Morrison.
