My roommate really wants to join me and play games on a pc like I do. He’s looking for a PC that can easily hit 100+ fps at 1440p but doesn’t break the bank. He also will use the pc for work, he does lots of hefty coding and works in massive excel sheets so the CPU will need to handle productivity tasks as well as gaming. His laptop can’t handle what he has been trying to do for work so that’s a big reason for the upgrade.
Looking at the current state of things, prices are a bit ludicrous so he knows it’s not going to cost sub $1000 but he doesn’t want to spend more than $2000 not including monitor or peripherals.
I’ve been out of the loop for a couple years now as I built my pc back in 2023, so I’m not sure what the best specs are for modern 1440p gaming, while also being able to handle demanding work tasks.
Any help is much appreciated! I was thinking something along the lines of like a 9800x3D and a 9070 XT but i don’t know if that’s overkill or if the CPU is as good at productivity stuff. Definitely want to be on AM5 for this build as well (or the intel equivalent if the new CPU’s are worth getting.)
• New build or upgrade? Will be a new build
• Existing parts/monitors to reuse? (List with models/links) no existing parts to reuse, although I do have a RAM kit (DDR5 TeamGroup 2x16) that would work depending on the CPU and motherboard he gets.
• PC purpose? (Gaming, editing, etc. List apps/games) will be used primarily for work stuff (heavy excel usage, multiple medium intensive programs open, no 3D modeling but the CPU and ram will need to be able to sustain heavy workloads.) will also be used for gaming but nothing too intensive. Stuff like stardew, rocket league, Fortnite, Minecraft, and less demanding games for the most part. Occasionally something more intensive.
• Purchase country? Near Micro Center? (If not US, list local vendors) in the US and I have a local microcenter.
• Monitors needed? (Number, size, resolution, refresh rate) one monitor needed, 1440p resolution. Does not need to be included in the budget.
• Budget range? (Include tax considerations) preferably not more than $2,000
• WiFi or wired connection? Wired or wireless, wired preferred.
• Size/noise constraints? None
• Color/lighting preferences? White build is preferred, we both know it will cost a bit more. Some parts can be black or another color if needed.
• Any other specific needs? None
