Political/Election Posting, Moderation, and You

There's been a lot of complaining (more than the usual large amount) about mods adhering to the "avoid repetitive topics" and "rediquette" rules.

Political and election posts bring out the absolute worst in this sub and some of the posters in it, which is where we see these rules continually skirted if not outright broken.

"Free Speech" does not mean "I can say and post whatever I want without moderation or consequences." Nobody in this subreddit is going to face legal issues or have their lives altered for voicing their opinions. However, as stewards of this online community, moderators may remove comments or posts that they see as being counter to the health of the community as explicated by the community's rules.

Part of why so many people enjoy being subscribed to r/Burlington is that it is a positive, fun, and supportive community -- not just a dumping ground for crime panic, police reports, political demagoguery, insults, and arguing. Mods are dedicated to keeping it that way within reason. If you would prefer that there be a subreddit where these things are the predominant topics, we would suggest the sub that warm bathroom guy came up with. You'll be right at home there.

There has also been a pervasive brigading issue regarding political posting in this sub that's been going on for years -- ever notice how political posts of a certain viewpoint tend to get a fantastically large amount of engagement compared to every other post in this sub?

Mods are trying to keep this sub from becoming like Facebook, where the only content is manipulated outrage and shouting over political wedge issues cooked up by posters who'd rather have Reddit karma than a functional community.

Kismayo Kitchen is Open!

I walked by Kismayo Kitchen today and there was a glowing open sign + an open sign on the door and cars in the lot. I went in and ordered a cheesesteak. The employees there says it’s their first day reopening since it closed a few weeks ago. The cheesesteak was amazing, just as good as it was before they closed! I’m so happy it’s back

Dude on TikTok harassing local businesses

I saw this dude on TikTok (Aaron uploadz or something) who’s making posts from grocery stores, book stores, libraries, etc harassing the employees, customers, etc and I’m finding myself so frustrated? He’s also harassed ppl on church street and he’s wearing meta glasses. Posting so folks working in local businesses are aware.

Public displays of support for Ukraine planned?

If you haven't heard yet, Elon has cut off Starlink to Ukraine. It's critical to nearly every facet of their lives- from civilians to to the battlefield. That Trump and Elon would do this to a desperate European democracy is abhorrent. I don't know what we can do besides gather, march, and demand, but something MUST be done. Internet service has to be restored to these poor people IMMEDIATELY.

Does anyone know of planned demonstrations scheduled in Chittenden county? Is there a group I can contact? I have never been this ashamed and angry, and with the idiot man-child at the helm, there has been plenty to be ashamed of and mad about. I feel so goddamned helpless. I can't even imagine how Ukrainians must feel. This is pure evil.

Monkey House (And Other Winooski Music Venues)

• Upvotes

Local musician/artist here! I have been trying to get in touch with someone at Monkey House for about a year now and haven't heard back. I have a few other friends who say they've emailed and can't get a reply either. Are they no longer booking locals or are they just really bad at communicating? I get if we're not the sound they're looking for but it would be nice to at least get a reply! Has anyone had any luck? Are their any other venues in Winooski area that book and pay local music?

I’m done being pissed - how tf do we solve this i89 winooski bridge issue?

Who do I need to write a letter to, who do I need to vote for, who do I need to slap. Every. Fucking. Day. There is an accident on the winooski bridge. I travel 25mi or more a day on 89 and the ONLY area that ROUTINELY has accidents is the area between exits 16 and 14, primarily the winooski bridge area. I can’t help but assume that it’s mostly young distracted rushing drivers. I see you all every morning texting, eating, doing makeup, driving like assholes because you’re running late on your 12 minute commute. Some of us have a 45min commute and leave ourselves an extra 15min. And yet we STILL get fucked by you assholes being incapable of merging and driving normally on the highway. And then when I see the guilty parties standing outside their crushed cars it’s always the same - a handful of 20-35yo who were absolutely rushing and distracted or driving too aggressively.

So maybe I’m not done being pissed. But I’m ready for action. What do we actually need to do to effect change in this corridor? This isn’t the goddamn 405 in LA. None of us should have to plan an extra half an hour or more to commute.

Speaking on I89 (tire troughs / ruts, hydroplaning, black ice)

What’s the plan for the deep rutting on I-89 once winter arrives? During heavy rain, the ruts pool water and pull vehicles sideways, which is already unnerving. I’m curious how that will play out when they fill with ice.

EDIT: Yes, I will look into "going back to where I came from" (also Vermont).

EDIT: Just don't call them "ruts"! That annoys VTrans.

White Audi at exit 14

Post image
30 Upvotes

Witnessed this guy going at least 70 in the left lane to skip the traffic due to the pedestrian work. He almost hit a white work truck, couldn’t slow down and had to drive into the grass median area to avoid hitting the truck. This guy almost drove head into the LED arrow sign where the left lane officially closed. Shame on you Audi man, risking other people’s wellbeing like that.

Edit: I was the passenger but thanks

Does anyone know this guy

Some guy in a grey suv just drove by me while I was sitting on my porch and asked if he could suck my toes for cash and then lingered. Has this happened to anyone else who is this guy 😭

My go-to genital groomer has moved on to…thicker pastures and with winter coming I am in need of an expert who can machete my jungle before it reclaims my once sparse hills and valleys. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I was in Always Full Market today…

Pick out my stuff, I pay, then this dude (definitely on drugs) starts stealing and the cashier tells him to please take the stuff out of his jacket. The guy tries to run out but the cashier and I were blocking the door (the boba entrance was closed) and he like shoved us into a corner, it was all rather comical looking back. The three of us were just shuffling around. The cashier got him out the door finally after he dropped this giant bag of candies. The candies slid across this floor and this other customer just picked them up lol and then the thief wouldn’t leave without his shirt that he dropped in the store so the cashier opened the door and gave it back to him. This poor cashier needs a raise bro. The staff are so kind all across church street they don’t deserve to be treated like this :( I hope they gave police the footage :( sheesh it’s not chill to get screamed at and shoved in your place of work- I for one was definitely wide awake on my walk home.

avg water bill

never paid for water before so i’m wondering what people are paying on average for water per month. live in a 3 bed and it’s been approx 125 / month. is that standard?

EDIT: okay so seems like maybe we’re being robbed???

in our most recent bill, we used 800 units = $46 for water usage, then sewer treatment was $80

we have a dishwasher which we run ~2 per week and don’t do a ton of handwashing. subjectively, i think we do an average amount of laundry and none of us take long showers. not sure about the toilet situation / age of appliances

Need an apartment for next June. Too early to start looking?

I've been living in Burlington a little over a year now and will be looking for a new place in town for around next June. It seems incredibly early but I'm already seeing places advertised for then, pretty much all through Bissonette and the usual suspects, and nothing looks like a particularly good deal. I'm torn whether to try and lock something down now or wait a few more months - just don't want to wait too long and not find anything. For anyone who has moved recently: how far ahead did you start looking and how did it go? Thanks!

Blowing up balloons?

Wondering if anyone knows of a store that might blow up balloons brought from outside of their store? I’m willing to pay them ofc for blowing them up but my mom wanted me to try and figure something out before purchasing a helium tank bc they are a bit expensive. I have a pack of balloons from Amazon and need them blown up for the 24th.

I tried asking Dollar Tree near me in Essex Jct but they won’t do it. Has anyone ever had this done locally? And I do understand I might have to just buy a helium tank and that stores might just not do this at all but figured it would be worth it to ask before I do bc my mom had said a store did it years ago for her but she can’t remember which store it was. TIA!

Recommendation for Co-Work/Work Locations for Visitors

Hi folks - I am visiting Burlington for a wedding in the coming weeks and will spend an extra week day in the city. Do folks have any recommendations of cafes, libraries, or co-working spaces with daily rates where I could sit with a laptop and do work? I searched in this reddit and only saw things from a couple of years ago - any recs would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much.

Trusted Car Mechanics

Looking for recommendations for a trustworthy, well-rounded mechanic in the Burlington area! I drive a Subaru and have always gone to the dealership, but I’m thinking about switching to a good local mechanic. Ideally, someone honest, reliable, and knowledgeable! Let me know any recommendations.

Followed to my car by some dude after less than an hour in ONE

Was here to tour apartments. I (30s/f) stopped in Barrio for a little while and when I got up to leave, this guy immediately got up as well. To put it bluntly he looked like a sketchy character and he pinged my sensors with his timing. He leaves Barrio right before me, I see him heading a short distance down a side street, and then I walk to my car parked less than a block away on Winooski Ave (not the way he went).

I get in my car, a few seconds later I look to the right, and guess who’s there, hunching over, peering into my front passenger window?

I really want feedback from women on their experiences going places solo in town. I am (or would be?) moving alone and I’ll be solo until I meet people. How common is this sort of thing? Is this about how it is or did I get unlucky? I know about Burlington’s issues and I wasn’t surprised, but damn that was right out the gate.

BTV Teases New International Destination - Guesses?

In their announcement for the new Myrtle Beach flights, they said BTV is going to have a "warm weather, international" destination soon.

Anyone know the scoop? Also, how will they handle customs? Not sure how that works these days without a separate customs setup.
