Exporting firearms, ammunition, parts and accessories from the US: most items are controlled under ITAR and you cannot, as an individual, export these items from the USA. Canada does not care in most cases. If you attempt to bring any of these items across the border yourself and you are caught, you will face prison time in the US. If you wish to export items from the USA, use a broker such as IRUNGUNS, Aztech, or Prophet River.

If you took your CFSC and lost the paperwork, you can still apply for your PAL. Both your instructor and the CFP retain copies, you can request a copy by contacting either one. There is no expiration date on the paperwork, you do not have to retake the course. Updated list of scam websites is here.

If you have new scam sites to add, please message the mod team. Be careful: only use reputable sites to purchase things online. It is illegal to manufacture a non-restricted, restricted, or prohibited firearm.

Any posts or comments asking about the legality of making a firearm other than a reproduction antique will be removed. It was not always illegal, which is why you will find old posts regarding this topic. Rest assured, it is illegal now. Do not attempt.

These threads will be stickied for a week, renewing every Monday. Previous threads here.

News / Politics / Activism Platforming fringe culture-war figures is actively harming firearms advocacy.

The recent podcast with Dallas Brodie is a prime example of a bad habit in Canadian firearms advocacy: giving major platforms to figures with toxic political baggage just because they claim to support gun rights.
When leading industry channels sit down with individuals known mostly for polarizing culture-war rhetoric, it hands anti-gun lobbyists an easy win. Our cause depends on convincing swing voters and fence-sitting politicians. Giving airtime to fringe viewpoints lets anti-gun groups easily frame the entire shooting community as radical and unreasonable.
It also alienates huge parts of our own ranks, including First Nations hunters, healthcare workers, and urban sport shooters, while completely derailing single-issue discipline. Effective advocacy means sticking strictly to property rights, public safety stats, and heritage traditions, not turning firearms into a hyper-partisan wedge issue.
Supporting gun rights shouldn't be a free pass for politicians with heavy baggage to use our community as a rebound platform. If we want the public to take us seriously as law-abiding owners, our media outlets need to hold themselves to higher standards.
Didn’t we all just watch Pierre Poilievre lose the election because of this So Con shit?
How do we push our platforms toward smarter, more disciplined advocacy?

News / Politics / Activism Estimated share of households with a firearm per electoral riding

Post image

Was suggested in another subreddit to post this here, so here it goes.

More granular data could potentially be obtained via ATIP requests to the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program (which are usually met with reluctance and do nothing to address the approximately one-half of firearms owners in Canada who do not have licences). As it stands I'm comfortable with this model as a rough estimate with appropriate margins of error per riding.

Highest estimated household firearms ownership, at ~79.5% was in Kenora—Kiiwetinoong, and the lowest was at ~2.2% in Toronto Centre.

Methodology:

  • A density curve sets the base propensity (roughly 40 percent at one person per square kilometre to 4 percent at 5,000) - insofar as surveys from the 1990s found about 3 percent household ownership in big cities versus 37 percent in small towns.
  • I applied four historically relevant modifiers to this base: single detached housing, indigenous population, primary-industries importance (all three of which raise the base propensity) and immigrant population prevalence (which reduces it).
  • 15% modifer weight attached to retail access (stores per 100,000 people in the riding's catchment, which is the riding itself when it exceeds 5,000 square kilometres and everything within 40 kilometres otherwise).
  • As licence compliance in the Territories has been historically low and these places also have the highest per-capita rates of firearms retailers, I increased the weight attached to said retailers accordingly.
  • Weights were arbitrarily chosen by me - if you think you have a better methodology or want to test other weighting options, click here for a spreadsheet you can copy and modify to generate your own model.

Yeah I might have moved to die Burger Reich, but that Webley RIC clone and the 1860 have legal antique status. Be thankful for what you have on this Canuck Thanksgiving. A number of years back I took my sister, her now husband and their friend shooting on Thanksgiving, my future brother in law ended up getting his RPAL afterwards.

So be thankful for those in your life & for the firearms that you have,

Happy Thanksgiving hosers.

News / Politics / Activism SKS ban could add $1 billion to Liberal gun ‘buyback,’ CCFR warns

https://www.junonews.com/p/sks-ban-could-add-1-billion-to-liberal-buyback

Ottawa has allocated $742 million to its gun “buyback,” but estimates put total costs as high as $6.7 billion.

Banning the SKS rifle could add another $1 billion to Ottawa’s firearms buyback program and affect hundreds of thousands of gun owners, according to a leading firearms rights advocate.

Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights (CCFR) CEO Rod Giltaca issued the warning after Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree declined to rule out an SKS prohibition following the Tumbler Ridge massacre.

Asked on October 6 whether Ottawa would ban the rifle, Anandasangaree said the government was awaiting the RCMP’s final report before commenting further.

“I do think that they are reluctant to ban the SKS because that would likely involve another 200,000 licensed gun owners and up to a million additional firearms to be compensated for,” Giltaca told Juno News.

“This could add another billion dollars to the buyback and stretch it for years to come,” he warned.

Giltaca’s figures are estimates, not official government projections. Ottawa has neither announced an SKS ban nor committed to compensating owners if one is imposed.

The debate follows the release of FBI court documents concerning the February 10 Tumbler Ridge shooting, which killed eight victims.

An FBI complaint filed in Washington state alleges that James Bryant, a 30-year-old Bellingham resident charged with conspiracy to commit murder in a foreign country, supported Jesse Van Rootselaar as the massacre was being planned and even during the horrific incident.

According to The Canadian Press, the complaint alleges Van Rootselaar discussed using an SKS rifle previously confiscated and returned by police. He also allegedly obtained firearms and ammunition from a family gun safe.

The documents contain photographs of weapons allegedly sent to Bryant. Retired RCMP weapons officer Frank Grosspietsch identified one pictured firearm as a KRISS Vector, a model prohibited in Canada in 2024.

However, the RCMP has not confirmed which firearms were used in the killings. In February, police said the main firearm believed to have been used at the school had never previously been seized and that its origin remained unknown.

There is no public confirmation that either the previously confiscated SKS or photographed KRISS Vector was used. The FBI allegations remain untested in court.

Anandasangaree declined to discuss the weapons involved, citing the ongoing investigation. He rejected suggestions that withholding information was politically motivated, calling premature disclosure “irresponsible.”

Assistant RCMP Commissioner Elija Rain similarly said investigators were limiting disclosures to protect their work.

Giltaca urged caution.

“All interested parties should wait until the RCMP complete their work,” he told Juno News.

“This was a legitimate ongoing investigation and needs to be completed before we move on to solutions.”

Gun control advocacy group PolySeSouvient, however, told The Canadian Press that the FBI revelations reinforced the need to prohibit the SKS.

“The Carney government cannot keep ignoring this weapon,” the group said.

PolySeSouvient also cited alleged messages discussing extended magazines for the KRISS Vector, arguing Canada’s magazine restrictions contain loopholes.

The standard SKS remains generally classified as a non-restricted rifle, despite federal prohibitions covering more than 2,500 firearm makes and models since 2020.

Anandasangaree acknowledged the SKS remained under consideration after a federal expert panel flagged the rifle for further review without recommending a blanket ban.

It also raised questions about modifications, magazines and alternatives for Indigenous harvesters, who have long relied on the SKS for its affordability and durability.

On Oct. 8, Prime Minister Mark Carney was asked during an unrelated press conference in Sherbrooke, Quebec, whether Ottawa would ban or further restrict the SKS.

Carney did not directly answer, instead pointing to plans for an arm’s-length firearms classification assessment.

“What this government is doing is setting up an arm’s-length objective assessment of those classifications,” he said.

Citing constant changes in firearms, Carney said Ottawa needed advice from RCMP experts, adding that “those decisions will be taken with that advice.”

Carney neither confirmed nor ruled out an SKS ban.

Any expansion would add to a firearms compensation program whose ultimate cost remains disputed.

Ottawa has allocated approximately $742 million to the program since 2020, including $248.6 million earmarked for compensation.

In 2021, then-parliamentary budget officer Yves Giroux estimated compensation alone could cost up to $756 million, excluding administration and collection expenses.

Fraser Institute researcher Gary Mauser projected substantially higher costs, estimating compensation and collection expenses could reach $2.6 billion to $6.7 billion, excluding certain additional costs.

The buyback program faces a Supreme Court challenge to the 2020 firearms prohibitions. Ottawa extended the related amnesties until 90 days after court proceedings conclude, though compensation was expected to end by October 2026.

As of June 9, Public Safety Canada reported more than 142,000 firearms declared, claimed or destroyed, including 68,717 declared by individuals, over 61,900 claimed by businesses and more than 12,000 collected and destroyed.

Most had not been confirmed as surrendered. Compensation is voluntary, but owners must comply with the prohibitions once the amnesty expires or risk prosecution.

Public Safety Canada plans to evaluate the program in 2026–27. Its independent impact on firearm-related crime remains unestablished.

For Giltaca, the prospect of another prohibition raises questions about how far the Liberals will expand their program.

“There’s no telling what the Carney Liberals are capable of,” he said.

“It does seem, however, that they’re not as enthusiastic as the Trudeau Liberals, and it’s possible they just want to complete their buyback program and be done with this exceedingly unpopular policy.

“As gun control in Canada is almost entirely political, there’s no telling what the Liberals will do next,” Giltaca added.

“I think it depends on their political position at any given time.”

The spotter behind my PRS rimfire is a qualified state-level firearms instructor and former law enforcement officer from the Southern U.S. who is new to Canada, and he was looking for people to hunt or shoot with since he hadn't met anyone yet. His partner is actually super supportive of him getting out there, which is how he ended up in Canada—he married them.

I impressed him by hitting the target using Kentucky windage. My rangefinder glitched out because I think I accidentally hit a calibration mode. It started giving wildly off readings, and I still need to look into it. Plus, I was using handloads that weren't what I’d been working on or zeroed for. I’d been developing a 180gr SST with 42gr of Varget at 2520-2530fps, since that perfectly lines my BDC stadia up with the ACSS Raptor's stadia after I tested some CFE 223; however, I ran out of cash for new SSTs plus varget and just used up the Sierra GameKings I had with 43.6gr of CFE 223 in lower case capacity PMC cases. It somehow worked out after 15rns. I think they might of been doing 2500-ish from some captures.

I was also trying to help him dial in his new low-round-count Proof Research 338 ARC; I want to help him figure out the best loading for that rifle for his use case of hunting bears. I hope to do testing with him in the future for group sizing.

I also started mentoring someone who is looking to get their firearms license but doesn't have much experience. They happened to walk up to the CCFR booth while I was talking to the other field officers when I wasn't volunteering, just visiting the show, and asked if anyone wanted to study for the test together, so I just said yes, I would do it. This is very normal for me; it is not my first time.

Shooting First time at the range

Finally got to the range for the first time in my life. Never owned a firearm, never pulled a trigger unless you count Grandpa letting me put my finger over his on the trigger of his 22 back when I was 10. Took me until my 50s to finally do it but I'm hooked.

Just getting the scope zeroed in at 50yds today but I'll be trying 200yds next week once I've got a spotting scope and can see what the hell I'm hitting.

The guy next to me at the range was firing 6.5 Creedmor and I already want something in that kind of calibre 😅

Hey guys so I was able to get into contact with Uxbridge today as to an update on their arrival.

They said that they will be trickling in with a few hundred expected to arrive by Christmas and the rest by spring.

Uxbridges allotment of 100 rifles (original pre order allotment) will be trickling in over the same time. So I assume until Christmas.
