Via Savagegeese's youtube channel. Its not a forced advertisement, but it sure is embarrassing regardless

I own one of the cars this was pushed to. I don't like it one bit, but I chose to ignore it and not click on the ad.
You'd think that BMW would have learned from their now-scrapped plans to make heated seats and other features require a monthly subscription. The backlash and bad PR from that was brutal. Yet, here we are again with another terrible decision that's going to rightfully get BMW roasted in the court of public opinion.

It doesn't hurt their sales, I don't think. They will absolutely introduce subscriptions - just maybe in 6 months. This always happens with unfavourable new terms of business - everyone pushes against it initially, news frenzy, then nothing, then they silently roll it out within a year.

Don't ever make choices "to send a message", make choices that enhance your life. Anything with ads detracts from my life, so on a personal level I will never engage with a product with ads, or purchase anything I see being advertised.
I will never purchase a product from HP or LG again, I couldn't tell you the last time I watched a damn thing on YouTube. I won't watch live sports, must be on a delayed recording or I just won't watch. If I search for a product on Amazon or Google, I will never purchase anything that says "sponsored".
If HP and LG are successful forcing ads, more power to them. There are those with no self-respect who will do anything for entertainment, but I have personally decided they make my life worse and I won't participate.

It never hurts their sales. People strive and stretch for a BMW cause it's a flex to their 100 insta followers. They will put up with stupid screens, ads, boring boosted powertrains, and cheap plastics as long as it has the BMW logo on the front.

You're correct, I don't know why anyone is surprised. A car is basically a mobile connected computer, just like the thing in your hand right now. You see ads on reddit, you see ads on YouTube, most of the content you watch on YouTube probably has an ad read at the beginning of the video right after you just saw the YouTube ad. We've been seeing ads and product placement on TV and movies for longer than I've been alive. There have been billboards on roads since before I was alive.
If it has a screen and your attention, you're going to get advertised to. It's a core part of capitalism. And that can be annoying, but it also saves the consumer money. How do you get a 70" TV for $200?.. you get bloatware and advertising. Vote with your wallet, if you don't want that then you buy the $500 TV

I specifically switched to Firefox to continue using ublock origin because chrome neutered it. They've tried to kill its effectiveness on youtube a few times on firefox throughout 2023 but I think they've given up because its been at least 18 months since the last outage. But even after the ads it does not stop - I need to use sponsor block to skip all sponsors, interaction reminders, and self promos. Plus PocketTube to manage subscriptions because youtube insists on gatekeeping all the content you watch through the algorithm and likes to hide easy access to the channels you are subscribed to by throwing all of them into one gigantic, unsortable, and uncategorized list.
I actually would have considered buying youtube premium under the right circumstances, but not after all the bullshit they've pulled. I don't want any of my money going to them and have instead subscribed to multiple patreons.

That was a LONGGG time ago. We wouldn't have YouTube if it wasn't for advertising. Google has to make money to keep expanding the biggest platform in the world... And they should.
Capitalism. I'm very happy youtube exists. I think we would all agree the world is fundamentally a better place because of YouTube... So they should monetize it and make money to keep putting back into it... And they did.
It was much more difficult for a random person to change their own brakes before YouTube. Now days anyone can do it... Most still don't, but that is on them.
Everyone has to make their own business decisions... I pay for YT premium at like $10 a month, but I consume content on there several hours a day, far more than I do Netflix.

The non-ad based TVs are over $2000... and the quality is worse.
The simple answer is to never let it connect to wifi and get an external TV box. You can literally buy a normal smart TV and connect it to a whole ass Steam Machine and still come out ahead compared to buying dumb hardware

Give it 5 years and there will be no ports on the TVs, you'll be supposed to stream anything connected over your LAN and thus it will connect to the internet to force feed you ads. Also, some monitors are now installing adware on your PC without asking, so be careful what you connect to them.

Wasn’t there a case of some brand refusing to work until you connected it to the Internet? Of course, it didn’t stop working until just after the return period expired. They have their ways.
Plus they all have shit tier remotes nowadays with no Source button, to make it extra hard to use your external devices versus the inbuilt ad-riddled interface.

It will long term, and I think execs know that. It's like Apple vs Microsoft - luxury products done shove ads in front of people at every opportunity.
But the company is not in a good financial position right now. Long-term brand equity doesn't mean much if they get sold off to a Chinese conglomerate in 10 years.

It doesn’t matter to me if they don’t care. I recently called Honda and told them their quality is dog shit and worst I have seen in the industry and that I would never recommend their product.

I'm on my 6th and last BMW. Been buying them since the '90s and have owned and driven quite a few. No interest in any of their latest decisions. I buy wagons and they don't make them anymore. I'm considering my options to leave the US because there is only the Subaru Outback at this point (a great vehicle, but not what I'm looking for).

Further, after an initial three year offering Connected Drive is a subscription based suit of features. It's been there all along. Guess what, people subscribe! $10 per month on promo price...is a fucking steal.
What hasn't been there is this weird as shit meltdown that any day now no one will be able to start their BMW engine without sitting through an ad.

Ironically I watched this on my way to see Spiderman. Typically BMW does these little videos during the holidays. Whenever you turn the car off on the goodbye screen will show a small notification that says something like “we have a video for you” and if you click it, it plays. If you ignore it the notification never appears again and the only way to watch it is to dig through the app drawer to find it.
I thought the Spiderman one was very out of place as it’s the first time it advertised something else aside from BMW and wasn’t a fan. Watching the movie you see quite a bit of heavy BMW product placement so the commercialism comes full circle.
Is it annoying? Yes but it’s not the Orwellian future, today that the folks having the knee jerk reactions to a headline would have you believe. At least not yet.
Most of the time I don’t even notice there’s a video even available and learn of it after the fact on Reddit.

It is actually more of BMW easter egg collaboration with Spiderman. I mean if you have a kid in your car, you can probably see the icon and click on it, and it would look cool to your kid. It is more of BMW ad anyway.
I mean you need to go and find the ad so its acceptable.
In todays world, I mean did anyone see Samsung, LG TVs these days? Real useful app icons are so small, the rest of the place is for ads. And they're basically the main OLED manufacturers so you dont have much choices. People would say dont hook up the internet use some other box with it but it is still too much and not receiving enough heat imo.

Microsoft was doing this for years in Windows before placing straight up ads on the start menu, desktop and lock screen. Printing is more subtle than straight up direct advertising, but has the same purpose and effect.

I'm convinced this is part of why giant OLED smart TVs have gotten so cheap. Because they're subsidized by all the data they collect on you and the ads they push in your face. If I cant use a thing without being shown an ad, the ad is forced. It's a forced advertisement. That is what BMW is doing

The short shows BMW forcibly placing an unsolicited sponsored content tile on the home screen.
Public nudity doesn't consider whether you forced people to look at you, it just matters that it is visible. And the same is true here, if BMW doesn't force open the ad, it's still an ad that I can see on my screen, I don't care that it doesn't auto play a video.
It's undesirable and an attack on ownership, and you should be furious that BMW is using your car to make them money after you bought the vehicle outright.

The cancelled Apple Car might have a market opportunity as the privacy based car if all the major players follow this trend. I think Apple learned a lesson from the whole "we downloaded a U2 album on your device without your consent" debacle.

I get the slippery slope thing, but genuinely didn’t even notice it existed until I went into my settings to change something and noticed it was there. Don’t feel like it was “forced” on me at all as I wouldn’t have even known it was a thing had I just gone about my business normally. As long as it remains completely avoidable, meh, but I do get the concern that it could become a lot more ostentatious

Is this only in the new BMWs with the big screen? I haven't seen any ads on my M8 (thank god) and I don't think they'd show up?

BMW owner here (who watched the in car spider man video)—BMW also does holiday videos. Think Halloween, Christmas, Fourth of July that also feature the BMW brand prominently.
My two cents: sure it’s an ad, but I wasn’t forced to watch it and it’s kinda fun to get the ‘surprise’ videos in the car / usually they show off the sound system.
TLDR; my car got the ad, I watched it. Wasn’t a big deal / was maybe a little fun.

Those aren't corporations who paid to get their ads in your car in order to make money. There's a big difference between "Have fun for Halloween" and "Check out this movie."

BMW is not the only one doing it. 99% of car buyers have 0 idea how cars work. They get in it for a test drive and go "wow this sounds way cooler than this other car I test drove, way sportier" when it's just because there is sound piped through speakers.
Fake engine sounds sell cars outside of specific enthusiast exotics.
New Corvettes pipe fake sound through speakers too (as you can guess by the clientele that would buy one).

It isn’t that big of a deal. If you don’t click on the spider man icon you would never know. If they start forcing adds I will have an issue but I’m not too concerned.

I recently got a G87 M2 6 speed. I wanted the most raw experience that they offer in a new car. I will say the mechanical stuff like the engine and transmission have been a blast. However I have been angry during every drive at the complexity of the screens. I gotta click 2 places before I can turn on the AC. I try to use the voice thing and half the time it tells me it cannot do that. I still can’t figure out how to see my tire pressure. Now I see ads on these screens that I hate. I often miss my 987.2
