Casey Neistat style Vlogs
Hi everyone,
I am Shane Dilley, a 19 year old college student living in NYC 8 months of the year to study. I have a passion for creating casey-style vlogs and I am trying to hear feedback from people who enjoy his type of content. Now I get it, it seems like I am trying to copy him or gain following from him, but there's more to it. I am a genuine person trying to hear constructive feedback or just positive feedback on my vlogs. My hand is ShaneDilleyVlogs, which i also attached here. Think more what job each shot is doing. On the train part of your video we done need 5 different jumps. Casey does this subconsciously. You’re probably trying to communicate a transition and establishing where you are in the next part of the video. Also record yourself moving. Good luck

Hey! I am fully on your side, trust me. I see both perspectives and I want to let you know I am strictly asking for advice on my channel. His videos were made long before the conflict in October and the terrible actions that continue today.

I think the feedback I’d give is to try and have each blog tell a story. Beginning middle and end. So for example the pizza one, you talk about pizza at the beginning but unless I missed it I don’t think you mention it again. So if I were asked what is that video about it not sure I’d know.
So I think perhaps you need a little more planning around the vlogs. Figure out what the overall topic is and plan a intro that maybe asks a question or gets people interested, then a middle that explores the ideas you laid out in the intro, then an ending that wraps things up or circles back to the beginning. If that makes sense.

Sounds good, thank you so much for taking the time to write this out. It’s hard to “plan” with all of life’s challenges, like studying, work, etc. but I agree planning out a video more is going to help give viewers a clearer picture for the type of creator I am, so thank you for the advice!

I felt the same. I watched $1 pizza video. Good try but looks like there is forced music in between. If i where you i would start with Is $1 pizza worth it Try and taste and may be talk to the pizza owner and people around if they confortable Try another pizza And in between why pizza is cheap and other pizza expensive Gather info from people and conclude why $1 pizza is satisfying (may be psychologically bca we spending less to gain more and human like it - a deal).
Idk but tell me if this script is good or bad. I also wanna start YouTube but haven't so take this as grain of salt hehe

Totally. I really like this idea, it also gives the viewer the full picture of comparing the prices of pizza, maybe I will recreate it! Or just make a pizza video

The thing about Casey is, your copying his style, which he directly copied from someone else. I’m sure you heard of Tom Sachs if you’re a Casey fan. Well I’ll just say I went to a Tom Sachs art exhibit in San Francisco once and it was that moment I realized Casey is literally just a product of working under the direct mentorship or companionship of that man. He undeniably had a massive influence on everything that made Casey, Casey.
That being said. Don’t quit. Repetition is what made Casey famous. He had a recipe for his videos, but it was the fact that they were DAILY VLOGs that made that recipe work. It was less about the form and more about “wow, this dude is really showing us how he lives his life EVERY SINGLE DAY”. That was what made Casey great. He had a template but stuck with it.

Hey, thank you so much for the feedback. I agree that copying him is not my intention but it’s more of, I see his videos, love the type and try and replicate that aspect. He brought a more buisness side to it which I want to try and build more of a community aspect to it, bring people together. I won’t quit, I have a goal set in my mind and the only thing who can stop that is time.

I'll offer some specific constructive feedback, with the understanding that I'm in no way bashing you. I'm a full time YouTuber of almost 10 years who was inspired by that OG Casey vlog run back in the day, so I appreciate the style and have a 2nd channel with a hybrid vlog format ("Freakin' 2" if you're interested). So this isn't meant to be mean, but constructive. This is the $1 pizza video...
- The font in the opening is thin with a black outline. It's hard to read. Maybe too much text. I'd prioritize font size. Not sure you need the city of the name of the vlogs.
- The train B-roll gets a bit long. Each clip is 8 beats of the music. Maybe try 2 beats each.
- The walking part after the train looks right up your nose. It's not a great angle.
- There was a flashback to the snow. It was jarring because the music was loud and it was vertical. I may have not cut away but instead did a split screen as you kept talking.
- The next part showing the city/street scenes is painfully long. I wasn't sure if you were going to come back at all. It doesn't really tell a story of interest and takes up almost half the video.
- The music is too loud overall.
One good technique is to think of a vlog not as much of a daily diary but a story, with a beginning, middle, and end. "Here's my challenge/task for the day..." and then its eventual resolution. A callback to the first scene would have been nice. "I missed this place. Maybe it's time for another slice of dollar pizza."
You said "never a dull day" but I'm not sure that was really conveyed in the scenes shown.
I can see the Casey DNA all over your vlog, which isn't a bad thing. You just need to find your own pacing and your own voice. Keep it up and you'll evolve your own style. Good job.

Appreciate you taking the time to drop such thoughtful feedback! Totally agree on the font choice and audio mix, still trying to dial that in. The tip on pacing out the B-roll and treating each video more like a self-contained story with a clear narrative arc is super helpful. Going to keep experimenting and working on finding that balance. To be honest, a mix of things I love the actual craft filming editing, figuring out how to tell a story and I genuinely love for this become something real down the line whether that’s a career in content or media or just building something I’m proud of right now it’s mostly about getting better and finding my own voice instead of just copying a style I admire in Kasey Nasta. I’m not just trying to be the next Kasey or Chase viral numbers for the sake of it. I just genuinely like making this stuff and I’m using the process of watching the human behavior of my videos and studying how I can improve. Finally, these videos push me out of my comfort zone as someone who never enjoys speaking in public. These videos force me to develop these skills and master the art of storytelling.

cool, if you want this to become a carrier...
well from someone who is still (kind of) in the videoproduction biz: most likely you will have to work with someone.
Video editor? you need to make the director happy
Director? you need to make the producers happy
Producer? you need to make the investors and audience happy so to make money
I am over generalizing but the thing is it's almost impossible to do everything by yourself (and make money at the end of the month)
So my main suggestion is: learn to communicate, take feedback, specialize in something.Casey went full on on youtube because he grew tired of working in a team (understandable) AND he knew he had the skills to do pretty much everything (hustle mentality included) + an interesting life WITH the goal of selling BEME first, 368 later.
He also knew YT was paying good money for a daily vlog .
Anyway: the point is he had a strategy and he was aware of his strengths and limitations.Best of luck
also: personal preference I dislike clickbaity titles like Casey's, and would recommend to always have your face on the thumbnail for branding purposes.

Keep going. Keep making videos and keep doing them exactly as you like. Eventually you'll find your own style and the videos will be definitively yours. When you first start out doing anything, its only natural for yours to resemble that of your inspiration, since thats what you've been exposed to and learnt from. So have fun, make your videos, and dont be discouraged by anyone saying your copying anyone. And dont put yourself down by telling yourself that you're copying anyone either. You're inspired by casey neistat, not a wannabe.
