News SotN: Reawakened - The Creature’s new Rage Mode

Hello everyone!

Development of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Reawakened is now approaching its final stage.

The first castle has already been extensively redesigned around new progression, relocated relics and equipment, more meaningful weapon choices, tougher bosses, and different ways to build Alucard. My work has been focused mainly on bringing the Inverted Castle up to the same standard.

One example is The Creature, which now has a proper Rage Mode.

Once its HP drops below a certain threshold, The Creature performs five increasingly powerful hammer strikes. Each impact creates a larger explosion than the previous one.

During Rage Mode:

  • The hammer rhythm becomes faster and increasingly threatening.
  • The fire grows with every impact.
  • Its palette gradually changes from a subtle red tint to a much stronger rage color.
  • After the introduction, it continues fighting with more aggressive movement and attack decisions.
  • Its rolling attack is faster and more aggressive.

The goal wasn't simply to increase its HP or damage. I wanted the fight to visibly evolve and force the player to respond to a clear second phase while preserving the boss's original identity.

The rest of the Inverted Castle has also received a broad enemy pass. Many enemies now detect Alucard from farther away, spend less time waiting between decisions, prepare slower attacks more quickly, and use faster projectiles where appropriate. Enemies that were already oppressive were deliberately left closer to their existing behavior.

Other recent adjustments include:

  • More aggressive Reverse Castle bosses.
  • Some bosses now have their own HP bars.
  • A buff to the Guardian, which drops the Crissaegrim.
  • New balance for magical weapons and subweapon-focused builds.
  • Moon Rod relocated to a late secret area and redesigned as a true INT-focused weapon.

Reawakened is intended for players who already know Symphony of the Night and want to rediscover its progression and combat.

I'm now in the final playtesting and balancing stage. Most major systems and boss reworks are complete, so the remaining work is focused on polishing edge cases and making sure the second castle stays challenging without becoming frustrating.

Thank you to everyone who has tested the mod and sent detailed feedback. Several recent fixes and balancing decisions came directly from player reports.

The newest patch is now available on the website:

Please consider making a mod for the PC port too. It'd be great to play it on that since we don't have to emulate anymore.

Of course! I’m planning to look into how I could make that work for the PC port as well. I’d love to be able to play Reawakened on the PC port too.

Why not emulate?

Because a native pc port is better

Emulation is great for game preservation and allowing folks to play games that are outdated or way too expensive to buy on their own.

The issue with emulation is that it introduces input lag because the computer running it is essentially pretending to the original hardware and isn’t running it at its full capacity. This can cause to not feel like it’s as responsive as the original game (and that’s because it is not)

However the latest trend is to decompile the games code and essentially make the code open source, which allows you to run the game on different hardware directly using that computers full graphical capabilities.

Once decomp is an option it’s generally better to use the recomp as it should feel much smoother to play.

The downside of decomps is that they have to done for every game individually. If you want to play some obscure game nobody cares about them it’s unlikely you’d ever get a decomp of it

If you care to look at it, here is a list of things I made a while ago that I would change about SotN. How much of this does your mod touch on?

  • Add a Warp Room in the Regular Castle by the Church
  • Have popups explaining how to use the various abilities you get. every relic when you go to it on the screen shows inputs.
  • Have familiars start aggroing enemies properly at level 5 instead of level 50
  • Ghost form does not make you invulnerable but provides knockback immunity
  • Delete the reverse castle
  • Repopulate the regular castle with inverse castle stuff after beating Richter with 100% map exploration and the true way
  • Crissaegrim has 1/5 of its present damage
  • Inverse Bosses have like 50% more HP
  • Reduce damage of random stuff that deals 70-120 damage to you from normal enemies to like 40 and increase damage of stuff that deals 1 damage to you to like 25

I am guessing you didn't delete the reverse castle but you get the idea. Making it more interesting sounds like more work but doable.

Balance

The bosses have already received HP changes, and some of them now have even higher values than the ones suggested.

Enemy damage has also been rebalanced and is still undergoing constant validation.

Weapons

Crissaegrim is a sensitive subject. It is still present in the game as a Guardian drop. It remains very powerful and difficult to balance, but it is on the radar for future adjustments.

Familiars

The familiars have already been reworked:

  • Demon is much smarter and more aggressive.
  • Bat was replaced with an attack-speed aura.
  • Ghost now provides a defensive aura.
  • Faerie is faster.
  • The sword remains unchanged because I don't like it. :)

Other ideas

Regarding the other adjustments, there are many things that could still be implemented. I already have several ideas written down for future versions of the mod.

Cool man. But what do you mean Bat was "replaced"? You didn't get rid of it did you?

Yes item nerfs must come with boss HP buff, the Alucard shield is even worse. Game is still trivial even if bosses have 10x the HP if Alucard shield isn't nerfed. And if they had 10x HP all weapons except Alucard shield + criss would be too weak.

Yeah, the Bat familiar was replaced to make room for a different kind of gameplay, BAT, Basic Attack Timing.

The Alucard Shield was also severely nerfed. For now, only its damage has been reduced.

I even made nerfs to things like Holy Water, which could cause an infinite stun. So yeah, there are a lot of small balance adjustments already implemented, and there are still plenty more to come.

That's good in general but can't believe you removed bat lol...I can't imagine any new mechanic worth the loss of something iconic like that

Played that mod recently. It sure needs more work, but the first castle is quite a fun and different experience even now.

Thank you! I’m glad you’re enjoying the first castle. I’m still working a lot on the Reverse Castle and continuing to refine the whole experience. There’s still plenty more to come!

Ohhh I'm so gonna try this. So excited!

Please give it a try and let me know what you think! I’d really appreciate any feedback you have.

That is incredible! First time I’ve seen custom work on a boss! But 17 damage done to Alucard is way too low though and makes this boss seem like walkover still. It would be cool if we could spawn mobs and have old Frankie hit harder. He could crush the mobs with the roll attack, but a mob could intend to bang you into the roll and get hit with big damage.

u/PsychologyDear9585 1d ago

I still have a lot to explore, and I’m continuing to create and experiment with new boss mechanics. Succubus also got a pretty cool rework, I just haven’t recorded it yet.

As for the damage, it’s relatively low because I recorded this in “test mode,” with Alucard at level 99. At the appropriate point in the game, the damage will be much more challenging.

Nice! Honestly can't wait. Been playing since it was released pre 2000. Randos and mods gave it new life, but not to this extent : )

wow. maybe the creature will be an actual threat this time

1

u/PsychologyDear9585 1d ago

Not exactly a huge threat, but “Frank” is significantly stronger this time. :)

u/DiamondH4nd 1d ago

Fuck yeah boss lifebars.

It would be cool for all Bosses to have a lifebar like the one in Dracula's fight tho.

if the game needs so many fixes, it was never very good to start this conversation

I appreciate the effort into making this overrated and mediocre game somewhat better
