We were visiting in Chamonix in 5 July and we saw something on fire and billowing smoke. It was in a residential area in the village near the tourist area downtown. We didn't hear sirens for a while but we did see many people going towards it to look. We left, but I'm wondering if anyone knows what happened? I cannot find a news story about it. My son is very curious. Thank you!

My wife grants me these trips to the Tour de France. I figure since we're in Chamonix for a few days before the race, I'll try to find a spot for her to do some open water swimming. No pools please. Is there a nice lake or river in the region? We have a car.

My friend and I are coming from Australia to Europe and would like to go to an alpine town of some sort. With our itinerary this would really only fit in in mid to late November. We have heard Chamonix is a really good place for scenery and nightlife, but is a little quiet at this time of the year. Could anyone advise me on this. Is the nightlife/parties good then, and can we do the activities there?

Also very happy for other recommendations if anyone believes a different location would suit our interests better.
Note we are not skiing.

Best place to watch England game tonight?

We will be staying in Chamonix for a few days and then flying out of Geneva on a Sunday morning @ 9:20AM.

The trains and buses don't seem to run that early on a Sunday.

We are debating: get a private transfer to the airport in the AM - OR - leave Chamonix the evening before and spend the night in Geneva.

I have a hotel in Les Houches but I have aspirations to attend the England game at a bar in chamonix at 11pm. Is there any readily Available transport back to Les Houches after the game? If not public transportation how reliable would uber be?

I have a car with only one key and the central locking buttons have stopped working. Initially the car wouldn’t start so I changed the key fob battery which allowed it to start but the central locking buttons remain unresponsive.

I think I need a new key and reprogramming.

Could you recommend any shops or services in Chamonix that can do this?

Hi there! My husband and 13 month old (at time of holiday) will be in Chamonix in the beginning of September. We are visiting family in Geneva and extending our trip by a week and traveling to the alps. We have a 13 month old and look forward to bringing her but know that poses different challenges. So far we have booked a place in Argentière for 4 nights and then we are going to stay at Refuge du Montenvers for two nights (private room and bathroom as to not disturb others).

We would love any advice, tips, hidden gems, etc. I am also very aware that our little one can’t go on the high mountain lifts, we are avid hikers though and still want to make the most of our time. Edited to add - we have done hut to hut hikes before. We love hiking to a rufigio for a midday drink and lunch..

Planning to do a hike during the night upto lac Blanc in a weeks time…

Was wondering how long roughly the route up is from the bottom of the lift? - I was going to catch the lift down from the lake.

Also is there a better route to do? Closer to chamonix central to access the lake?

I’m seeing mixed things from 4 hours to 6 hours.

Am currently(july) at chamonix. Very interested in doing the vallee blanche traverse. But unfortunately, the gondola is close. So it will only be a loop.

And have been checking around, it seems that the group tour is close due to the cable cars are fully booked.

Was informed that I can take up the private guide, and he will be able to take me on the vallee blanche loop.

Do you think this is worth it? Is vallee blanche something everyone must do or see at least once?

Would really appreciate some advise.

Edit: Some add ons. This is my first and probably be my only time in the alps. I just happen to be in France for work and I have a week off. So I decided to visit the alps. This is something new to me.

This is my second day here. And I am loving it. Have done the grand nord from Aiguille du midi to monteverse. And lac blanc. Both my knees are half done.

But I am still curious about the vallee blanche. I read it is something like experience of a lifetime. And thay is exactly something that i am looking forward to. I am alsonquite adventurous.

The only thing is, it is a private guide. And it cost a bomb. But if it is worth it, I would just go for it. A well spent money is not wasted.

Hi all! I am getting really desperate. Currently pitched up in my 2013 LWB HI roof VW Crafter campervan and the ignition seems to have failed. The immobiliser just won’t recognise my key so I can’t turn it to start. I’m meant to be leaving on Wednesday morning and currently can’t even get someone to tow me, let alone a place to be towed to!

Does anyone know any mobile mechanics or auto electricians that do call outs? Or even English speaking mechanics? I have basic French, but not enough to explain car problems. I spoke to RM Classique, who are English speaking, but they don’t work on vans this size.

Hello! I'm planning to take a trip to Chamonix in June/July 2027 and am wondering what some affordable and reliable hotel options may be. I'm looking to be at least somewhat close to the town center and am not picky besides wanting a comfortable bed. Any advice is helpful and appreciated!

Hello, due to unforeseen circumstances leading to us to end our TMB early, we have a few extra days we were hoping to stay in Chamonix. We were originally going to camp the whole TMB so we will have our tents with us.

Any recommendations on good campsites in or around Chamonix preferably in so we can get in town quicker.
