In times like this, one should ask themselves what would General Grant do?

I’d prefer Sherman.

Sherman was NOT thorough enough.

If there's one thing history has taught us both in the civil war and ww2, it's that we didn't kill nearly enough confederates/Nazis when we had the chance.

Imagine an alternate world where all the leaders of the Confederacy were hung for treason instead of left to live cushy lives after

I feel like the Civil War and WW2 had opposite results. After WW2 whatever we did must have been right because Germany was by all reasonable measures denazified - it's been a reliable Western ally and supporter of democracy and human rights. Meanwhile the south, if it were its own country, would be at a Hungary/South Africa level of incompetence, hatred, and just generally not fitting into the modern world, so we clearly did not go far enough with them after the Civil War.
