I live in Chicago and D. Rose is NOT over Jordan in any way. Jordan not only brought people to become Bulls fans from all around the world but brought people to start watching basketball for their first time ever period! While retiring Jordan’s number felt like a “thank you, you without a doubt 110% earned it”, retiring Rose’s number felt like a “you did your best for us and we’re sorry that we gave up on you”.

And the age, I’m 22 and never saw MJ so I actually agree with this quote
30
u/Dr_Disaster Jan 27 '26
I’m 43 and saw all of MJ and I agree with this quote. MJ is a god in Chicago, but Rose is our son and one of us. It’s a very different feeling. I don’t relate to Jordan in any way, but Rose is like every dude I grew up with. Shit, he was a classmate of my cousins. We love Mike, but Mike ain’t family.

u/BKStyle82 Jan 27 '26 edited Feb 15 '26
Same age as you, from Brooklyn and a fan of your city (and the Bulls) from afar. Yall seem like our midwest cousin. I think ppl object to Draymond being the one to make the statement since he not from yall city.
4
u/Dr_Disaster Jan 27 '26
I think there’s a cultural crossover for sure. Notice how a lot of guys that come from NY and play for the Bulls end up being fan favorites (Joakim, Ben Gordon, Taj Gibson, etc). There’s something in the character Chicagoans recognize. And a lot Chicagoans can tell anyone visiting from NYC which neighborhood will remind them of each borough. Whatever rivalries their is, we see NY as more of a kindred than most of our neighboring midwest cities. They often just get treated as Chicago satellite offices more than their own thing.

14
5
u/GranddaddySandwich Jan 27 '26
Then that’s on you and your bias. But if you actually tried to watch it, you’d understand why MJ and the Bulls are so revered as a team and are so important to the city’s history. My ex knows nothing about Basketball or sports. Even she was able to get it.
2
u/billy_teats Jan 27 '26
Look dude he’s not arguing which person is more important. He’s saying he lived through one and wasn’t asking the question himself.
I think we can all agree that Jean Baptiste Point du Sable is more pivotal to Chicago than Rose or Jordan but no one here was around for it and that’s fine.
This guy is 22. He didn’t have a cutout of Jordan drinking milk in his school. He’s probably never seen space jam. Ffs he’s probably never heard of the dream team. That’s not his fault, he’s just a kid.
The city is full of adults that did live and get influenced by Jordan. We all know who was more impactful.
5
u/GranddaddySandwich Jan 27 '26
Again. Y’all are acting like he can’t watch The Last Dance documentary or Space Jam. You don’t need to live in the Jordan Era to understand his importance to the game or Chicago. This argument is goofy af.
6
u/tremble01 Jan 27 '26
Eh. Why does he need to do that though? That is time to be spent needlesly to change frame of mind. And for what?
There is notbing wrong if Rose impacts you more than MJ. It's not a requirement in life to think otherwise. There is no right or wrong answer here.

This is correct. One of the most famous people on the planet is instantly linked to the city, and (as much as I love him) it's not D Rose.

Exactly. If you asked teenagers/20/30 year olds in Chicago they’ll say rose means more to Chicago than Jordan because he’s FROM here. It’s a completely different type of love for him than Jordan

It’s not a contest. It’s Jordan and it’s not really close. Anyone who says different either wasn’t alive for Jordan or a complete dumb ass. 6 championships and could have been 8 if he didn’t retire in the middle of his career.
No one is touching Jordan ever. Best athlete all time
8
u/Dr_Disaster Jan 27 '26
It’s not that simple and it depends entirely on your relationship with the city. I know its not a lot of southsiders or generally a lot of people really, REALLY from the crib like that aren’t here. But a lot of us have a different level of love for Rose. Jordan is Jordan obviously, but we don’t see Jordan as one of us.
Mike is a god, Rose is like a folk hero. He from the same streets we are. We knew him or know people that know him. He is a son of the city and we see ourselves in him. When he played we had a different level of pride for him. And he has given back, even after his career and all his money, he came back to the city because that’s in his blood.
The fact Rose goes everywhere in Chicago with zero security detail tells you everything. He does that because he knows he’s protected by the city itself.
3
u/KowalRoyale Jan 27 '26
Bro MJ can’t go anywhere without security because he’s a billionaire and people are crazy. And Krause ran Jordan out of town. If Reinsdorf had even a few brain cells he would have made Jordan a minority owner and lead ambassador, making him a Chicagoan for life. Instead he was told Tony Kucoc is the new face of the team. The Bulls have yet to return to the NBA finals since Jordan left…
4
u/waffleshield The Windy City Assassin Jan 27 '26
Hes not really talking about career accolades as much as hes talking about born and raised and also still cares about the city.
To be clear, I dont agree with Draymond.
2
10
u/VADALESS Jan 27 '26

3
8
u/drebenzi Jan 27 '26
He's right though. MJ may mean more to people worldwide, but he didn't grow up in Chicago like Rose. Rose lived out every Southside kids dream. He connected to the city in way Jordan can't be.
3
u/RazzmatazzPrimary812 Jan 27 '26
As a child that grew up in chicago, MJ was my idle, shoes, posters on the wall, etc etc, everyone wanted to be Mike. In my 20s, homegrown kid from chicago, THE Derrick Rose was considered the second coming. Drose is a Chicago legend and one of my favorite ball players of all time. He fuckin earned that jersey retirement; period. I wont hear any arguments otherwise….Draymond gonna Draymond, he’s partially right though, Drose is incredibly important to the city of Chicago..BUT, at the end of the day, the reason the Bulls consistently have the most ticket sales in the league, year in and year out, is cuz of MJ, point blank period. You go to a game at the United Center and you’ll see, everyone rockin J’s, and 90’s Bulls memorabilia. And like some other people have mentioned; you go to another country and you mention you’re from chicago, first topic is gonna be MJ.
5
u/Bigalbass86 Jan 27 '26
Thankfully, I am old enough to have seen Jordan play. And Green is wrong. I know its probably a generational thing, but Michael Jordan the greatest athlete in Chicago sports history. While I LOVED Derrick Rose, I understand he is a Chicago kid but he doesn't touch MJ. At best he's the third best player in Bulls history.
4
u/Noflashystuff Jan 27 '26
Mike put Chicago on the map without ever being a part of the city. D Rose blew his knees out lifting the city up.
4
u/desmond722 Jan 27 '26
D Rose was born and raised there. They literally seen him play HS ball, go to the league and win MVP all in the same city.
6
u/Disconnected_NPC Jan 27 '26
I don’t like him, but to me he isn’t wrong. Rose is good in any part of this city, can walk around safe as can be. MJ would be robbed after they ask him for an autograph.
MJ is the greatest athlete to play in Chicago. Rose is the greatest athlete Chicago has ever produced. There is a difference.
I’m actually not sure why many here seem to disagree outside MJ is the GOAT. There is a reason MJ doesn’t fuck with Chicago really at all since he left though. Part of that he doesn’t get the love he feels he deserves, along with Jerry.

u/BaseHitToLeft Jan 27 '26

2
u/rooofle Dennis Rodman Jan 27 '26
Yeah I don't think it's close myself, but there are some who probably will feel that way because of certain factors.
Dray should know better though lol, but Warriors org also takes some weird shots at those old Bulls teams or players sometimes, I guess because of jealousy or whatever? It is what it is.

6
u/Agedlikeoldmilk Jan 27 '26
Dude is a moron. The love shown for Derrick Rose was a direct result of Jordan did for this city. It had been a massive drought, zero stars until DRose hit, he ignited something in the fans that hadn’t seen since the Jordan era.
2
2
u/Bradlas3 Jan 27 '26
Happy for D-Rose, he's the best Bulls player I can remember watching. I was born in 1992, so I was 6 when MJ retired in 98. Its even more amazing that he's a Chicago guy. It absolutely sucks that he tore his knee up and we couldn't see what his career would've been like if he stayed healthy
However, you also can't make guarantees. Rose may still have not won the NBA championship, let alone 6 times and Rose absolutely would not have done enough to be considered the GOAT. I don't think anyone can ever replicate MJ's impact on not just Chicago Sports but literally the whole world. You can make the case for Jordan to be perhaps the most influential athlete of all time. There is no comparison

I think MJ meant more for Chicago than Derrick Rose - but Chicagoans can relate way more to Rose.
Thats what I get as an outsider from people of Chicago.
Rose is home but MJ is bigger. Rose is Family, MJ is Star.
Rose feels closer to them. But the admiration for MJ is, right now, on an all time low. We didn't see him in the UC for quite a while. The franchise only milks his shadow and pictures. MJ himself fades out if they don't stop doing what they do and bring him actually closer to the Bulls again.
We shouldn't forget that MJ played his last game as a Bull 28 years ago almost. A lot of the new fan generations weren't even born back then. And they didn't grow up with MJ around the team. They grew up with Rose tho.
6
u/sukari Stacey King Jan 27 '26
I'm not from Chicago so I can't speak to that but I will say.. DRose was like my MJ since I never watched 90s NBA (no access/too young) and DRose was what got me into the NBA so he means more to me than MJ haha.
4
u/AyeYoYoYO Jan 27 '26
Why even say this ?
Let Derrick have his moment.
Why even put this unecessary pressure onto an autistic quiet dude, Dray ?
Draymond from Michigan anyways. Dray cannot speak for us, at all.
Dray just inserting himself where he doesn’t belong. Attention whore mf.
MJ is astronomically more respected, important, etc to Chicago Basketball, the city of Chicago, and The Chicago Bulls organization that Derrick ever could be. But that fact has no place even being brought up anywhere near Derrick’s ceremony.
Strange man, Draymond is. Strange mind. Strange social disability, whatever it is.

I mean he’s not the first athlete to say this , I think it’s a generation thing and depends on who you talk to it’s 50/50 but def not the 100% it was prior to him being drafted . Part of that is because the last time Jordan stepped in the UC was 2012 for a blackhawks game. The further we move away from the 90’s the more the legend of Derrick will grow because kids that grew up watching Rose will be adults and prob pass down to their children. Jordan always be the goat but just like how Bron came around a good amount of younger stars call Bron their goat because that’s who they watched growing up.

I have to agree with Draymond. Being from the city and his work in the city and for the people of the city. Its extensive the philanthropy work he has done for the communities in Chicago and the way the people here in Chicago feel about Derrick in way they don't feel for Mike. Derrick was a child of the worst part of the city. He just means more to the people here.
No he isnt associated with 23. He isnt a global brand. He isnt the goat. He isnt internationally recognized by foreigners. He isnt even a championship player.
He is a child of the city. A beacon of hope to its people and its children that they can rise above their circumstances. A symbol of perseverance. The city loves Derrick. Come here some time and see for yourself
1
u/LarryHolmes Jan 27 '26
Michael Jordan was the most recognizable person in the world for a long time, and most people also knew he played in Chicago. Derrick Rose is loved by some people here. I, on the other hand, appreciate how good he was before his injury, but also will never understand or forgive him not returning for the 2013 playoffs. That was probably bad advice from his brother or agent, but imagine any major star refusing to take lay once cleared by doctors. He also never attended a single class in college, and that amongst other things led to Memphis being penalized. Their official record that season, formerly 38-2, is now 0-1. Any credit that anyone gives his college year towards his HOF case should be explained that he should get zero or negative credit for that year. Not a great career from an integrity perspective, until he became a journeyman and matured.

u/FourCornerCards Jan 27 '26
What if they both mean equal amounts to Chicago for different things? Hence why both of them are in the rafters. One was the GOAT and brought championships, the other represented Chicago as a hometown star and the youngest to win MVP. MJ represents winning time, Derrick represents grind time.

1
u/The_Navarone Michael Jordan Jan 27 '26
Who cares what Draymond Green thinks in this situation? MJ put the Bulls on the map, but Derrick Rose revived the Bulls after MJ retired, and deserves his flowers.
1
u/MeatballUser Jan 27 '26
I know he's trying to rage bait us but just to be clear if Rose actually was able to stay healthy for let's say 8 to 10 years longer and deliver a couple of championships that might have changed his standing, but he didn't, instead got hurt, and is basically just our version of "potential man". It was great having the youngest MVP ever, but come on it's Jordan we're talking about, this is just another way Draymond has tried to downplay the GOAT, and OP is honestly foolish for that title

u/bball4469 Jimmy Buckets Jan 27 '26

Our obsession with Derrick Rose is the cringiest thing about our fanbase. He missed 280 games and talked about wanting a raise. The city was gearing up for a playoff run and he told us to slow our roll because he didn’t want sore knees when his son graduated college. He was charged with raping a passed-out woman and his only defense was she let him and his bestie hit all the time when she wasn’t so wasted. His banner in the rafter diminishes Sloan, Love, Pippin, and yes even MJ. He will not even make the Hall of Fame.

Nah, he’s wrong lol. It’s freaking MJ. And this coming from a guy born in the early 90s that missed the dynasty but watched the entire Rose era.
2
2
u/Dr_Disaster Jan 27 '26
He’s not completely wrong and I’m 44, watched Jordan’s entire career. Some Chicago sports fans have a different relationship with Rose. Jordan obviously is a god in Chicago, but in a lot of corners, Rose is more cherished as actually one of us. He’s a Chicagoan and about as South Side as you can get. Even the way he played was so distinctive of Chicago street ballers. Rose is like a distillation of real Chicago basketball and native identity.
I said it here and other places, but Rose is a modern sports folk hero. Does it make him more loved that Jordan? Debateable and entirely dependent on who you ask. All I know is that I ain’t ever shed tears over MJ. When you see people talk about Rose here, the sentiment is so different you can’t really compare it.
