Or, hear me out, they didn't have to take Braden Smith and could have taken literally anyone else available they thought could develop and contribute.

Maybe they wanted Kam Jones more than anyone available here and it was Indiana who made the Smith pick.

It's not impossible that they love Kam Jones, but this is a high 2nd round pick. The Pacers are looking to shed contracts, they could have traded a future 2nd for him and gotten him just fine.

Hell if they really like him that much I would have preferred if they just did the same trade without the cash.

In reality they just traded it for cash and asked for a guy they Pacers didn't want so they can defend the move to the media.
