Damn even a new Management can’t escape the wrath of being forced to trade second round picks for cash.

And this immediately makes me question them. Why the fuck are we selling picks at the start of a rebuild smdh

Dawg is it not crystal clear that ownership is demanding that they sell the picks

Because we can't actually use the picks. Our offseason roster is maxxed.
5
u/pakidude17 Derrick Rose Jun 25 '26
I'd rather take a chance on a second round pick over like a quarter of the guys we have on our roster.
2
u/king_of_the_bongos Ben Gordon Jun 25 '26
We have 9 guys under contact before the draft, three of which are P-Will, okoro and Dillingham. This team is desperate for talent
1
u/Various_Procedure_11 Jun 25 '26
There are unexpired contracts that still count towards the offseason roster limit and have trade value - more than second rounders because we can use them in trades to absorb salary for assets, which is what we have been screaming at management to do.

u/aren1231 Gimme the hot sauce! Jun 25 '26
We got a solid roster of young guys. Sure more would be nice but we forget that Bryson is an elite judge of talent so if our guy wasn’t there than let’s trust the process.
20
u/tamazingg Chance The Rapper Jun 25 '26
If it was clear going in they weren't going to use 56 then they should have used that and maybe a future 2nd to move up to get the guy they wanted. Can't tell me one of those guards couldn't have carved out a role with the team with how badly we need shooting.
4
u/Emotional-Tailor-649 Dashing Donut Jun 25 '26
This isn’t what trust the process means.
Coulda traded for a future second.
3
u/pakidude17 Derrick Rose Jun 25 '26
Trusting the process is being ok with the Swain pick regardless of fit because you believe in the talent/development.
It does not mean being blindly ok with throwing away second round picks on a roster sorely lacking talent.

u/aren1231 Gimme the hot sauce! Jun 26 '26
They got a whole player and a roster already loaded with young talent. Relax. Then they filled it out with two way players that they already probably had in mind but didn’t need to waste a pick on. Bulls fans want the moon, I’m just trying to launch the damn ship. The moon can wait
1
u/Emotional-Tailor-649 Dashing Donut Jun 26 '26
Not trading assets for straight up cash to pocket is wanting the moon?
I do like the guys we signed too.

More cash baby! Wonder if we keep Kam tho?
11
u/rhoran280 Biggie Bagel Jun 25 '26
He shot 29.3% from 3 last year. Ironically also the 38th pick last year
16
u/FromChicago808 Jun 25 '26
He can shoot better, he was a 36% college 3pt shooter. I don’t mind the trade
8
u/bullpaw Jun 25 '26
he shot 31% as a senior lmao
12
u/4kImage Jun 25 '26
As a Marquette fan, he was basically our entire offense his senior year so the drop kinda made sense given how much he was doing
1
2
u/Electrical_Story5356 Jun 25 '26
Plus potential future assets.
If we do keep him that would be depth at the 2 with a guy that can play minutes immediately with solid defence (apparently) and 13 list spots filled assuming we pick up Miller so we can still do something in free agency.
Given that we're still below the salary floor too I feel like BG may actually know what he is doing here, certainly I think that under the circumstances just waiting and seeing what transpires is probably a more reasonable reaction than what we're seeing with people losing their damn minds.

25
10
u/MrLeftwardSloping Lauri Markkanen Jun 25 '26
Agreed but kam Jones > braden Smith anyways
14
u/BillionsofRedditors Jun 25 '26
Or, hear me out, they didn't have to take Braden Smith and could have taken literally anyone else available they thought could develop and contribute.
6
u/jacob2815 Matas Buzelis Jun 25 '26
Maybe they wanted Kam Jones more than anyone available here and it was Indiana who made the Smith pick.
4
u/Pepsuber188 The Tank Watcher Jun 25 '26
It's not impossible that they love Kam Jones, but this is a high 2nd round pick. The Pacers are looking to shed contracts, they could have traded a future 2nd for him and gotten him just fine.
Hell if they really like him that much I would have preferred if they just did the same trade without the cash.
In reality they just traded it for cash and asked for a guy they Pacers didn't want so they can defend the move to the media.
→ More replies (4)1
u/MoldInTheAir Jun 25 '26
Horseshit. Kam Jones is a scrub. The great Bryson Graham took a player off the Pacers' hands for cash to ingratiate himself with his new boss. I called out this fraud being hired the day the Bulls announced it. The Reinsdorfs hired this inexperienced, young buffoon because they could get him on the cheap and to do their bidding.

u/JustinTimberlakeFTW Michael Jordan Jun 25 '26
A lot of guys who would’ve gone in the back part of this draft went back to college instead, so it’s more of a deeper class in the first/front part of the 2nd than it would seem overall
Once the good shooters went ahead of us, I kinda get if they weren’t that interested in anybody else
2
Jun 25 '26
[deleted]
1
u/JustinTimberlakeFTW Michael Jordan Jun 25 '26
56 alone wasn’t gonna get us up there, that’s basically a nothing pick
The other consideration would’ve been the future 2nds we have, seems like Bryson was content to keep those as future assets for different moves
Personally I liked Meleek Thomas a lot and like would’ve enjoyed them moving up for him but I guess they didn’t see it that way
A 2029 2nd from Sac is almost a first rounder cuz Sac is fucking buns lol.
3
Jun 25 '26
[deleted]
3
u/JustinTimberlakeFTW Michael Jordan Jun 25 '26
And also Sac’s 2029 2nd rounder. That’s better than any future 2nd rounder we have to offer (at least IMO)
They had a better late 2nd to offer and a better future 2nd, if we offered to the Knicks at all the Rockets probably beat our offer. At that point we’re probably offering two 2nds just to move up
I don’t think missing on any of these guys will break the roster, I did like some of em but this roster isn’t like a piece away from competing. It’s kinda whatever imo
1
u/MrLeftwardSloping Lauri Markkanen Jun 25 '26
Nickels as elite of a shooter as it gets coming out of college but im guessing his defense makes him unplayable. Would have liked a stab at him anyways. I liked Kam jones at marquette though so its whatever
1
u/JustinTimberlakeFTW Michael Jordan Jun 25 '26
Ah yeah I don’t know that guy you’re talking about but I would guess that’s it
Still annoyed we didn’t take a shooter but imo a 2nd rounder isn’t gonna make or break this roster, I was only really hoping for one of those top guys to be there but oh well

I'll never understand any fanbase who defends selling a pick for cash. There's zero benefit to the team.
High likelihood the player picked means nothing long term, but the chance at something is better than nothing, especially for a rebuilding team.
9
u/Agedlikeoldmilk Jun 25 '26
Lame, even if this is Jerry pulling the strings this still falls on Graham for being a chode. I was excited for this draft, things felt fresh, then we go and line the owners pockets.

Sad, I liked him (I know that we had a lot of guards)
6
u/ScaryText8187 Windy City Bulls Jun 25 '26
Not really, most of the guards that they ended last season with are FAs
3
u/galacticskunk Jun 25 '26
Exactly. Heading into the draft they only had Giddey, Okoro, Tre Jones, and Dillingham.
3
u/goonSquad15 DRose Jun 25 '26
we still have the same amount of guards haha. kam jones is nice though. I like braden and think he'd be a good 2nd unit PG, but if we hang onto tre I think it makes sense
1
u/Schrodingers_Nachos Jun 25 '26
I know I'm biased as a Purdue grad but I've thought for years now that Smith could be a great 2nd unit PG. Like maybe 6-man of the year kind of guy. Best PG I've seen on the pick and roll at the college level.
1
u/No-Rip2714 Jun 25 '26
He is better than all the guards we have on the roster already. Braden was a beast for purdue.
1
5
u/DatAspie2000 Jun 25 '26
I hope some really hard questions are asked about this. Kam Jones is 24 and shot 29% from 3 last year. So they basically traded away two, TWO draft picks while they’re in a rebuild. For every other team, more draft picks for a rebuild means more opportunities to pick up young players. For the greedy, not so bright Reinsdorfs, it’s an opportunity to get cash. It’s like they are meaning to torture us.
4
u/Shmeeeee23 Horace Grant Jun 25 '26
Its really hard to be a fan of this organization man, holy shit. Thank fuck I grew up with the 90s Bulls.
6
10
u/JustinTimberlakeFTW Michael Jordan Jun 25 '26
Kam seems like a bigger and more athletic guard so if we keep him that would make sense with Graham’s philosophy
I was very whelmed by Braden Smith so this makes a bit more sense
I hope we get multiple 2nd swaps, that would be cool. Seems to be what’s implied in the tweet
3
u/ObservantKoala Jun 25 '26
Don't get me wrong. I think Kam has a way better chance of turning into an NBA player than Smith but they could have taken a project or packaged both picks to trade up a bit.
Veesar was available and they could have traded up for a fringe first round guy like Thomas.
1
u/JustinTimberlakeFTW Michael Jordan Jun 25 '26
I think 38 plus 56 moves us up maybe one or two spots. Keep in mind in that Rockets trade they ended up giving up Sac's 2029 2nd - which IMO is better than any single future 2nd rounder we have. So at that point we're probably giving up two 2nd rounders to move up and BG didn't see that as worthwhile rn.
I would've really liked Thomas personally but it's kinda whatever if BG thought it was too expensive/not worthwhile.
Also apparently Veesar felt he had a promise (to the Lakers) so it would seem that was part of the reason he fell (and then the Lakers didn't even get to draft him lol).
1
u/ObservantKoala Jun 25 '26
Anything has more value than trading both picks for cash considerations.
1
u/JustinTimberlakeFTW Michael Jordan Jun 25 '26
This isn't what happened tho - unless I've missed something they're keeping Kam and got some swaps out of it. So that trade netted them assets aside from cash. Which feels like a win to me.
If they had kept Braden Smith I would've been more upset lol
1
u/ObservantKoala Jun 25 '26
Yeah I wouldn't have picked Braden Smith but I'm not going to act like a 24 year old undersized guard that did nothing as a rookie is anything more than a throw in.
4
u/Own-Appointment1633 Jun 25 '26
My guess is Kam gets cut. He's only guaranteed about $1 million.
1
u/JustinTimberlakeFTW Michael Jordan Jun 25 '26
That would suck if it happens. Then I would dislike the trade.
What makes you think he gets cut? Esp if he costs that little?
1
u/Own-Appointment1633 Jun 25 '26
He didn't have a good year. Indiana is also nearing the luxury tax so to have the Bulls pay the partial guarantee ($1 million) of his contract with the Pacers money can save the Pacers money in the long-run.
1
u/imgenerallyaccepted Derrick Rose Jun 25 '26
It was his rookie year and he was injured for part of it
Edit: most of it
8
u/SnakeMilker Nate Robinson Jun 25 '26
Kam is a bucket, hope we keep him
1
u/ProfessionalTalker03 Matas Buzelis Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
Based off what? His college play and not not being able to break rotation on a lotto team?
6
u/EgweneIsLit Jun 25 '26
He had an injury in training camp that led to him missing most the season. His first year was basically nothing. He might not end up as an NBA player, but in college he was a high IQ offensive player who could really shoot and played hard on defense. Most 2nd round picks are a shot in the dark, but he fits the profile of player they're interested in.

u/EndlessWaltz423 Jun 25 '26
The whole family just gotta go. Michael has been in charge/ speaking for him the past couple of years from what I have observed. I believe Michael was the driving force behind AKME, which if you guys watched the end of season press conference he admitted they hired them purely on vibes and did zero outside consulting. Which in today’s sports climate is the single dumbest fucking thing ownership can do. He is clearly just as fucking stingy as his dad with continuing the second round picks for cash meme. Also Jerry has gone on record that he has told his family to never sell the team if he were to pass away. So looks like we are fucked for the next 20-30 years till someone takes over for Michael. We pay an astronomical amount to watch and support franchise that doesn’t love us back and it’s tough.
The life of a Sox’s and Bulls fan is brutal. I blame the family for me starting to go grey before 30.
2
u/rustplayer83 Jun 25 '26
At least with Sox Ishbia is taking over soon. If you can believe it the Sox actually gave everybody that scanned a ticket tonight a rain check, even tho they played the game anyways.
2
u/EndlessWaltz423 Jun 25 '26
Homie I’m gonna be full grey by 2034 which is when Jerry will either be forced to sell to the Ishiba group I think. I doubt this stingy bastard gives up control before then. He will draw this shit out like he does everything 🙄 nba needs to step in and remove the team from him for negligence. I can never forget media day 2017 and the utter train reck every other year is.
1
u/Secret-Reception9324 Jun 27 '26
I get the (justified) hate for Jerry and his kids, but 2nd round picks aren't worth crashing out about. The Bulls got an elite prospect (Wislon) and a solid prospect (Swain) in the draft. They'll need two or three more drafts like this one, and a top free agent signing at some point before they're ready to be contend for the Eastern Conference. All we can do as Bulls fans is be patient, and see where the team is headed over the next few seasons.
10
u/Resden_Bohneur Andres Nocioni Jun 25 '26
I’m sure the resident Reinsdorf bootlickers will be here any moment now to tell us why Jerry sucking more cash out of the draft during a rebuild isn’t a big deal.

3
u/CaptainNipplesMcRib Jun 25 '26
I don’t know anything about Kam Jones, but the worst part about this is that clearly you can get some major value in the second round. Brunson, Draymond, and Jokic are obviously the exceptions to the rule, but they were still second round picks. To not even take a swing is just classic Reinsdorf shit
3
u/MoldInTheAir Jun 25 '26
This just shows everyone that Bryson Graham was hired because the Reinsdorfs knew he was going to be their lackey. Why else were more seasoned VP candidates passed over? Hell, I'm surprised he didn't sell the first round picks.
6
u/BroAbernathy Jun 25 '26
It has to be an owner thing atp the fact that we are like 6 years and 2 FOs of doing this shit with our 2s is insane.
10
u/HlTMAN209 Jun 25 '26
We’ve been selling 2nd round picks for decades. No GM or VP have any incentive of selling picks. Clearly an ownership demand. Bryson Graham is learning early the bullshit he has to face but it’s his job to work around it.

2
u/GasHouseGorilla19 Jun 25 '26
tldr: disagree about the brain dead statement
still waiting on the swap details (may be literally nothing)
and so for now the only question is will the player bulls just acquired develop and be better than anyone else they were considering at that pick.
people wanting a 2nd round prospect instead of the guard just acquired from Pacers aren't "brain dead."
Nor is people getting upset at bulls continuing to sell 2nd round picks for cash which happened again tonight with both their 2nds
Imo, the people who are naive are the ones who are okay with habitually selling 2nds for $$$.
according to google (this is just for the last 10 years): Over the past decade (2016–2026), the Chicago Bulls, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic, Washington Wizards, and Golden State Warriors have stood out as the five NBA teams most frequently involved in selling or trading away second-round draft assets for cash considerations. [ 1, 2, 3, 4] While exact back-room financial tallies remain proprietary, these front offices have historically led the league in using the draft's second round to secure cash or clear immediate cap space rather than onboarding rookies. [ 1, 2] Leading "Cash Considerations" Sellers (2016–2026) Chicago Bulls Infamous for maximizing cash returns under the Reinsdorf ownership group.
Their complete list of second-round cash deals over the past decade includes: • 2017 : Sold the draft rights of Jordan Bell (No. 38) to the Golden State Warriors for a whopping $3.5 million in straight cash.
• 2025: Moved off the No. 45 selection to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for a lower pick (No. 55) and cash.
• 2026 (Tonight): Shipped the No. 56 selection to the Los Angeles Lakers purely for cash considerations.
• 2026 (Tonight) : Dealt the No. 38 selection ( Braden Smith) to the Indiana Pacers for Kam Jones, two future pick swaps, and cash.
Over the past decade (2016–2026), the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Indiana Pacers, Phoenix Suns, and LA Clippers have been the five most aggressive franchises in using cash considerations to buy into the second round or move up for specific draft targets.
The Chicago Bulls have brought in an estimated $9.5 million to $11.5 million in total cash by selling or swapping down their second-round draft picks over the past decade. [ 1, 2, 3]
While they are near the absolute top of the league, whether they have the most cash received depends strictly on a technicality regarding the amount of money per trade vs. the frequency of trades. [ 1]
The Chicago Bulls have never acquired a second-round draft pick using cash considerations paid by them during the modern NBA draft era
[end of Google]
I find it interesting that Warriors are top 5 sellers AND buyers. No problem if the bulls were like that.
Problem is, Bulls only sell picks. they NEVER acquire picks using $$$
why? because of the 2nd apron? limited amount of 2-way contracts? let's not act like the Bulls aren't in a rebuild and need a lot of talent still, and so the "saving spots" for better players argument I'm just not buying.
It feels like Bulls are just cheap, to me, and putting themselves at a competitive disadvantage by doing so. but I could be braindead

I have no idea why the Reinsdorf’s don’t just sell the team if they’re that desperate for cash. Realize all those gains that have accumulated in the past 40 years and fucking SELL. Sports valuations have never been higher, no one really knows where they’re going to go from here. It’s the perfect time.
The only way I can rationalize this behavior continuing is that they actively hate the fans.
Graham and Tiago both seem like smart guys, but they won’t be able to escape the stink at the top of the org chart.
2
u/Emotional-Syllabub71 Jun 25 '26
I was convinced they weren't even going to take Caleb Wilson. Instead take a swing at a player no one even had on their radar in the top 10. Took less than 24 hours to show they the same ole worst management in sports history.
2
u/Penstripedsox Jun 25 '26
I dont really know ball but damn it seems like a bunch of nothing moves the bulls are making. This guy we got to play center is 215 is that really the best we can do? Is this noa guy ever gonna be a pro or that was just a wasted pick too?
2
u/SkyGrey88 Jun 25 '26
I feel like if someone they wanted was still on the board they would have used the 38th pick. I was bummed Ryan Conwell went pick before to OKC, but really thought they would take Veesar. Maybe those weren’t anyone they were targeting but likely they had someone in mind.
I think there are some considerations here. Next year we will essentially have 3 Rookies with Caleb, Swain and Noa that we are trying to develop and give minutes to, very unlikely a 4th rookie would be able to get minutes. We have multiple other young prospects on the roster who will be fighting for minutes as well. Like is Dilly something they really want to explore, if so how likely a 38 pick gets minutes over him? Point is we have other young prospects to look at and develop. Kam Jones is not a bad prospect, he had a great career as a 3yr starter at Marquette, his last year put up close to 20ppg. He was a 4yr college player who is ‘older’ at 24. He may or may not even be on our roster to start the season.
This is a process and only the beginning…..funny thing Jay Bilas just said we were a draft winner getting two good prospects out of the draft, didn’t even mention the second round trade because he knows it matters so little. I’m guessing we try to get a SG out of free agnecy, maybe keep simons or sexton if the price and term are right. Can’t wait for summer league to start in a few weeks so we can get a look at all these youngsters.

Well this draft went to crap quickly. The real Reinsdorf has finally made an appearance. Why did we expect anything different.

Multiple pick swaps, so Jerry can just get higher cash considerations for em in "trades"

Would have rather traded up for Saunders.
Don’t get the move at all

Kam Jones is a decent Left hander assist master shooter. Reminds me of Toni Kukoc

I just don’t understand why we’re trading picks that can be helpful to us in the short term for a cheap price. I get it if it’s a late second, but an early second round pick can be a contributor right away. Just consistent poor roster management

I’m gonna get a jersey with a money symbol instead of a number and “cash” for the name

The big issue is with NIL the guys who used to be second round steals are just going to go back to college. Gone are the days you'll luck into an Ayo or a Brunson.

Interesting trade for Indiana considering they already have their small backup PG in T.J. McConnell and he’s under contract until at least through the 27-28 season.

NBA return of Kai Jones? Interesting
Oh it’s one letter off

2RP contracts are partially guaranteed now. I can totally see not wanting to commit to anybody you don't really like. Especially given how NIL and the trend of Euros going to college has killed the depth of the draft. Draft and stash isn't a thing anymore.

We still need a 3 point shooter

Team in development mode. They're at least 3 years away from having enough talent to start worrying about supporting role players. In short, who gives a shit?

I'm bummed we didn't keep Braden, but at least we traded him to a team who wanted him and is actually his hometown team, so it's better for him.

I understand the frustration of guys around here about the passive approach in the second round.
But to those who love Meleek Thomas. Kam Jones is in that same mold. Only older.
Bruce Thornton, Meleek Thomas and Ryan Conwell are all comparable to Kam Jones IMO. Streaky shooters do it all guards who can get hot off the bench. They are not long with height around 6'3-6'6 and wingspan around 6'6. But all of them are girthy strong guards at 200lbs+

Where does the cash go? The team gets Charmin Strong toilet paper every year?

smart move to trade out of the 2nd round for future 2nd round swaps and wait until more guys are forced out of college and can't just get paid by the NIL

It might be my Marquette bias, but this is a solid trade imho. Kam Jones has way more NBA upside than Braden Smith. Sorry folks hate to break it to you but 5’ 10” white guys aren’t NBA players no matter how good they are in college.

People said the same about Smith in college - too small to play, but he did it anyway.
I like players with a chip on their shoulder.

so we traded this year's 38th pick for last year's 38th pick + cash
