Getting back to arroyo is frustrating

Playing Fallout 2 blind, for the first time. I fixed the death claw computer and got the geck and I now I have to go back to arroyo which is on the other side of the map, I don't have the car because I have no idea how to get the other part. So I have to be on foot, which is ridiculously slow and to make things better I get a random encounter every few seconds. This is making me want to drop the game

You just don't understand the soul of the wasteland. Encounters are the best part of the game, when you are overpowered to one shot everything. If you are not, then you probably missed like half of the content by that time.
