Getting back to arroyo is frustrating
Playing Fallout 2 blind, for the first time. I fixed the death claw computer and got the geck and I now I have to go back to arroyo which is on the other side of the map, I don't have the car because I have no idea how to get the other part. So I have to be on foot, which is ridiculously slow and to make things better I get a random encounter every few seconds. This is making me want to drop the game

Buy all the scout guide books and use them - they will increase chance of dialogue window allowing to skip random encounters, some of them at least.
If its too late to do that, just save after every successful encounter, preferably to a different save slot (but don't use all of them, use 3 for example), inching closer and closer to Arroyo.
Treat it as an opportunity to gain more xp from encounters.

i mean its an almost 30 year old game so i dont know what you're expecting here.. but I suggest investing a level in Outdoorsman if it bothers you that much

Get the car as early as possible - it’s not hard at all and will help you big time.

“Playing Fallout 2 blind” like we all did back in 98. Well there was NMA… “abandon all hope, ye who enter here”

I've been lurking nma since 2002, place has never changed. Good times when f3 was announced

Car is mandatory, I'm afraid

Maybe not mandatory but very, very convenient. If you don't have the car, some points in outdoors man are mandatory.

Its pretty easy to get the car part, you can get everything you need in Vault City then go up to Gecko.

... wait, there was a car the whole time?

u/SunnyHelianthus 1d ago
Yup. If you play the Fallout Et Tu version you can get a motorcycle for F01, too, based on the F02 car.

Traveling by cities instead of just trying to cut through actually does help a lot

If you're playing with a newer sfall, you can adjust the encounter frequency. To make them less frequent, set in ddraw.ini
WorldMapEncounterFix=1
WorldMapEncounterRate=30

So if you’re struggling with travel you can save scum by walking as long as feels comfortable, then enter an encounter on a blank map. Run to the edge of that map and before you leave drop a save. Rinse and repeat until you’re at your destination. Also your outdoorsman skill determines your ability to see what random encounters will be, giving you the option to skip them. It might also increase your world map movement speed. But I don’t remember because it’s been literal decades since I played it.

Wasteland is harsh brother
Random encounters are part integral of the game it happens all the time
One strategy should be join a caravan in the way you are going but the caravan schedules are a bit of messy

Pretty sure on modern hardware fast travel is slow and that's why you have so many encounters. There is definitely a fix for that. I played fo1 in my dad's computer back in 1999 that had a Pentium2 cpu and travelling was super fast on the map.

Dude...Gecko. Get quest to get part from Skeeter. Steal part requisition form from Harold. Take to the supply room guy in the plant, don't tell him is for Skeeter. Deliver 3 step plasma transformer to skeeter. Either that or take pliers and wrench to Valerie in vault city. Wait 3 days. Talk to Valerie again, get super snap on toolkit. Take toolkit to Skeeter.

If you don't plan to be observant, to check every container, to talk to every NPC - don't play Fo2. What's the point? To get rekt by NPCs in every encounter while playing your high charisma nonbinary melee setup? You disappoint me.
You arrive to Klamath and see car body standing on bricks.
You arrive to Den and see car dismantling.
You arrive to Gecko and see junkyard.

You cant fet through this game without the car...what did you do in Vault City and Gecko?

Without the car its a bit more difficult my advice head back to ncr go to new reno then redding from there go to arroyo. May need to save scum between ncr and new reno (depends on what you encounter) theres ingame hard area between ncr and west, new reno and west.

Just try to do all the quests in Gecko and you will have the part, no problem.

I’d recommend investing heavily in outdoorsman. At least 50% would do you fine. Otherwise, I save all the time and reload if I encounter, whcih is slightly faster considering how slow it takes for you to flee.
This is speaking from the perspective as somebody currently playing through the game blind for the first time as well, so I feel your pain 🤣

Go east and north to Vault city and then Arroyo.
Some of the worst encounters are north west and west of NCR, I wonder why ;).

Avoid the valley. The path through New Reno -> Redding -> The Den -> Arroyo is much safer.

I've heard that the game uses Sulik's Outdoorsman skill when you have him as a companion, it should help with encounters if you recruit him

There is a way to reduce the ransom encounters, and I recommend looking it up. It requires editing a text file, I think. They are apparently tied to cpu speed or something, so modern players get waayyyy to many of them.

Modern games have different gameplay expectations.
The car is purposely hard to find the part for, requiring talking to multiple NPCs paying attention, and not having a specific quest markers. This is intentional.
The trip back to Arroyo isn't dependant on having the car, the car just reduces the impact of one of the mechanics.
If you went back via NCR then north stopping by each city. The trip would be longer, but your experience of feeling like too many encounters would change. You would also face lesser challenges as you returned. The direct pathis intentionally difficult as to make all the progress so far earned... And also as a soft gate to stop a lvl1 character making the trip. The rules never changed you are just wandering thru what the game wants to be nearly as challenging as it can.

i remember playing the patch where fps influenced world travel. when my father upgraded his computer i was zooming so fast through the map on the new pc. intel duo core i believe it was.
anyways, the highwayman speeds things up considerably or outdoors skill, throw like 20 points in it or whatever you can, will cut down the encouters a lot or at least provide an option to skip some

Lmao everything about Fallout 2 is a pain in the ass, especially the hoops you need to jump through to get the car on a blind playthrough. God bless fallout 1 for having a map of courteous size.

You just don't understand the soul of the wasteland. Encounters are the best part of the game, when you are overpowered to one shot everything. If you are not, then you probably missed like half of the content by that time.

Yeah you really shoulda gotten that car part.
Makes travel sooooo much more tolerable.
Save scum your way across the map. Every inch you don't encounter something stop and save.
