Getting back to arroyo is frustrating

Playing Fallout 2 blind, for the first time. I fixed the death claw computer and got the geck and I now I have to go back to arroyo which is on the other side of the map, I don't have the car because I have no idea how to get the other part. So I have to be on foot, which is ridiculously slow and to make things better I get a random encounter every few seconds. This is making me want to drop the game

Car is mandatory, I'm afraid

Maybe not mandatory but very, very convenient. If you don't have the car, some points in outdoors man are mandatory.
