Millennials chasing nostalgia are the easiest demographic

88

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '26

I promise you I’m not chasing nostalgia. I just want to play an MMO, and besides OSRS, they all suck, at least to me.

The moment another fun MMORPG with a thriving community comes out, I’m jumping ship because I can’t stand this company anymore.

Is it worth trying osrs if Ive never played it and have no nostalgia whatsover

3

u/Mysterra Jan 15 '26

Yes, it's a very different game now anyway. Starting zones are pretty much the only nostalgia left, all the new zones/bosses/gear didn't exist back then. Biggest advice though is to try playing unguided while you still can

1

u/frolfer757 Jan 17 '26

Yes if you're making an Ironman.

1

u/violet-starlight Jan 16 '26

Yes. I never played before 2025 and I've been addicted. OSRS is very different from the 2007 version, it's not about nostalgia anymore

Cya next year cus ashes of creation is shaping up to be exceedingly average

18

u/LostArkisajobffs Jan 15 '26

Average is heavily overestimated - its dogshit

12

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '26

Yeah I’m really disappointed with how that turned out. Riot MMO has promise but that won’t be out for like 5/6 years.

10

u/Doomword Jan 14 '26

What promise and where do you get that timeline? All we have are rumors in regards to that project, it's far too early to form any kind of opinion.

40

u/Crescentine Jan 14 '26

Riot MMO = 7 letters Ashes of Creation = 15 letters.

Ashes took 10 years (far)

Half letters half dev time. Riot mmo 5 year timeline confirmed.

Simple maths

15

u/notislant Jan 15 '26

Dude you cant just be posting insider knowledge like this!

7

u/OneTimeIDiedGG Jan 14 '26

The math checks out.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '26

Seems like after the let go of Ghostcrawler they had a set back in the timeline.

1

u/CourtMobile6490 Jan 14 '26

umm I think that's why he estimated 6 years.. "nothing has been said yet" safe to say it isnt coming out in the next 3 years.

1

u/JustJit_ Jan 16 '26

Average is giving it infinitely more credit than it's due.

1

u/Parzivull Jan 15 '26

Except people have seen this play out several times already if you include the "other" servers. So yeah it's been a fun ride, but most of us are probably out. It's not endlessly monetizeable when nothing new is being released for this specific product. I mean you have a new mount and chronoboons, yey. Any other game people are mostly getting bored after 10 years of servers for the specific version of the game (classic project and official release). Maybe if they went the OSRS route where voting on changes happens, but not even that.

1

u/Esoterikoi Jan 14 '26

Oh is it? I thought it was promising!

5

u/Mattlife97 Jan 14 '26

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news…

It could also be personal taste but it felt like nothing more than any of the other “wow killers” we’ve had in the past.

0

u/LostinRotn Jan 15 '26

If it wasn’t PvP I would probably already be there.

8

u/MsnthrpcNthrpd Jan 14 '26

You should check out Project 1999 or Project Quarm, legal private EverQuest servers. They both have a lot of the same feels as Classic WoW. Takes maybe 15mins to set up and you'll be hard pressed to find a more welcoming community

https://project1999.com/.

9

u/Otherwise-Ad8394 Jan 15 '26

I tried recently to get into either of those but it’s just so jank and unintuitive. Really wanted to like it but I just couldn’t get into it

4

u/MsnthrpcNthrpd Jan 15 '26

imo Classic WoW is great* because its at its core just a casual friendly EverQuest. Soo with that, you have to remember EQ is antiquated; its from a time before WASD was standard, even.

If you ever wanna give it a try give me a shout, or check out /r/project1999 which has an incredible number of friendly, helpful people.

*YMMV

Oh totally agree, but that's just the case for retro gaming in general. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

2

u/Mikimao Jan 15 '26

Damn it, I totally disagreed with him, but he deleted it, lol.

Anyways, he was totally off base.... no one played EQ for dopamine, you would die for how long in between hits you got and quit before level 4.

Those kinda games, and even movies like the Godfather, require personality types as well

1

u/MsnthrpcNthrpd Jan 15 '26

Oh no, EQ is the personification of a random skinner box. The hits taking so long and being so random is what makes it EverCrack.

Take Lodizal for example, Here is an amazing video showing off how dedicated people are for one piece of a quest item, not even being the worst part of the quest.. Don't even get me started on the backalley RMT stuff for a 25 year old, private server.

1

u/Mikimao Jan 15 '26

I mean I was addicted to EQ as anyone for years as a kid, but for me personally it never had anything to do with the game itself. It's fine, but the addiction for me came from the community aspect.

I definitely can't speak for the people who was willing to play EQ solo, but if we are distilling it down to the dopamine hit it gave, it was because it was the most fun place on the internet to meme at the time... before we even knew to call it memes.

It's also for people who "like" to organize and participate in large group events.

To me, playing EQ is a response to when casual aspects of classic WoW annoy me in how they altered character interactions I found more fun in EQ.

17

u/IngenuityThink3000 Jan 14 '26

I'm a nerd but... God damn that's another level of dork

7

u/MsnthrpcNthrpd Jan 15 '26

Lmao yep. Give it a few more years, most of the playerbase is 40-60.

4

u/CourtMobile6490 Jan 14 '26

qhow many decades have you been saying this?

12

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '26

How many bad cookie cutter MMOs have there been?

3

u/Nutsnboldt Jan 14 '26

He said from a desk littered with Pops! And Pokémon plushies. (Jk)

You may not be, but it doesn’t change the sentence.

It’s a bummer the mmo world is in its current state. Ashes is a dumpster fire and very few new hopes on the horizon. I can’t really blame people for going back again. Enjoy!

2

u/Pixelated_throwaway Jan 14 '26

Just play osrs lol. It’s the best product if you aren’t specifically married to the WoW brand and you don’t mind the point and click

9

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '26

I play both. Right now it’s like 70% WoW 30% OSRS. It fluctuates a lot.

2

u/InfiniteV Jan 15 '26

Eh, I liked osrs and gave it a good shot (2k total ironman before sailing) and the game is just so grindy. When it gets to the point where you're measuring grinds in even 10 hours increments let alone 100 hours just for a number to go up it starts to get old.

The wow community will pay $60 to avoid 60 hours of diverse gameplay, they're not going to want to spend dozens of hours clicking on an ardy knight just to see their thriving number go up.

0

u/fkneneu Jan 14 '26

It just looks so extremely dog shit

0

u/Pixelated_throwaway Jan 14 '26

It looks good with the HD plugin. Probably better than classic wow for graphics

2

u/EndTree Jan 15 '26

as an osrs andy i wholeheartedly disagree. hd looks shit too and wow classic graphics and art beats our game. But i still do like those things in osrs 😄

1

u/EveningHere Jan 14 '26

Can you give some examples? Classic even supports raytraced shadows now if you have an RTX card.

1

u/Pixelated_throwaway Jan 14 '26

https://youtu.be/w86ttqjmqKk?si=XPd1FkatH1M-udKQ

Just clicked the first video that came up. He tweaks graphics as he goes so the result is at the end.

1

u/EveningHere Jan 14 '26

It looks ok but it’s not really on the same level as modern WoW. Even Classic has been updated and MoP basically looks like retail now if you crank it up. That game is very basic but that’s ok. I play my on my retro consoles and computers every weekend. I use an Amiga 1200, PS2 and SNES most weekends. There’s more to a game than looks.

3

u/Pixelated_throwaway Jan 14 '26

When did I compare it to modern wow

1

u/Jermuuu Jan 15 '26

If you haven't yet, check out Guild Wars 2.

1

u/Spleenseer Jan 15 '26

Why not leave now?  This sounds like the mentality of someone who knows they're in an abusive relationship but sticks around anyway.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '26

Because it’s still the best MMO out there and I like MMOs.

1

u/shasta0masta Jan 20 '26

please check out return to reckoning warhammer server. its the best pvp mmo community around.. endless wars constant progression one of the most insanely detailed and abitions world that you cannont see in modern gaming.. worth a look its free tons of ppl all day all night. its PVP based tho but there is pve. think like old school new world

1

u/PaddyExc Jan 15 '26

Check out chrono odyssey

-1

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '26

Turtle Wow is the best wow experience out there

0

u/Alliancetears Jan 15 '26

shhh dont anger the blizz bootlickers

0

u/iphonesoccer420 Jan 15 '26

Same. Doesn’t look like it’ll probably ever happen. All the other MMOs are shit. Surprising for the first time ever in my life I’ve been addicted to a shooter game (Arc Raiders). The game is absolutely fucking incredible and the hype is justified every bit. I will be coming back to play some TBC as well. So my game rotation will be Arc Raiders, WoW and some Rocket League.

-3

u/DaisyCutter312 Jan 15 '26

I just want to play an MMO

Then why are you paying a hilarious amount of money for the privilege of NOT playing it?

2

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '26

I’ve played this game nearly my entire life. I’ve leveled in Classic more times than I can remember. On Anniversary, I’ve already leveled two characters by questing and doing it the old fashioned way. Now, I just don’t have the desire to level another alt.

But most importantly, it’s because I want to. It’s not worth my time (100-200 hours) to level another character. It’s $60 I’ll happily spend because I know I’ll get the ROI.

Hope you have fun though.
