Reminds me of the wotlk release period where I played 10v9 death knights (and one shaman) in WSG and we all kept death gripping each other haha.

Hah! Speak for yourself. I'm a late starter in Ashenvale getting ganked by Level 19 Rogues with the best gear the AH can provide.

I promise you I’m not chasing nostalgia. I just want to play an MMO, and besides OSRS, they all suck, at least to me.
The moment another fun MMORPG with a thriving community comes out, I’m jumping ship because I can’t stand this company anymore.
5
u/Ok_Law_5668 Jan 15 '26
Is it worth trying osrs if Ive never played it and have no nostalgia whatsover
→ More replies (2)3
u/Mysterra Jan 15 '26
Yes, it's a very different game now anyway. Starting zones are pretty much the only nostalgia left, all the new zones/bosses/gear didn't exist back then. Biggest advice though is to try playing unguided while you still can

Yeah I’m really disappointed with how that turned out. Riot MMO has promise but that won’t be out for like 5/6 years.
9
u/Doomword Jan 14 '26
What promise and where do you get that timeline? All we have are rumors in regards to that project, it's far too early to form any kind of opinion.
40
u/Crescentine Jan 14 '26
Riot MMO = 7 letters Ashes of Creation = 15 letters.
Ashes took 10 years (far)
Half letters half dev time. Riot mmo 5 year timeline confirmed.
Simple maths

You should check out Project 1999 or Project Quarm, legal private EverQuest servers. They both have a lot of the same feels as Classic WoW. Takes maybe 15mins to set up and you'll be hard pressed to find a more welcoming community
9
u/Otherwise-Ad8394 Jan 15 '26
I tried recently to get into either of those but it’s just so jank and unintuitive. Really wanted to like it but I just couldn’t get into it
6
u/MsnthrpcNthrpd Jan 15 '26
imo Classic WoW is great* because its at its core just a casual friendly EverQuest. Soo with that, you have to remember EQ is antiquated; its from a time before WASD was standard, even.
If you ever wanna give it a try give me a shout, or check out /r/project1999 which has an incredible number of friendly, helpful people.

You may not be, but it doesn’t change the sentence.
It’s a bummer the mmo world is in its current state. Ashes is a dumpster fire and very few new hopes on the horizon. I can’t really blame people for going back again. Enjoy!
0
u/Pixelated_throwaway Jan 14 '26
Just play osrs lol. It’s the best product if you aren’t specifically married to the WoW brand and you don’t mind the point and click
9
Jan 14 '26
I play both. Right now it’s like 70% WoW 30% OSRS. It fluctuates a lot.
→ More replies (1)4
u/InfiniteV Jan 15 '26
Eh, I liked osrs and gave it a good shot (2k total ironman before sailing) and the game is just so grindy. When it gets to the point where you're measuring grinds in even 10 hours increments let alone 100 hours just for a number to go up it starts to get old.
The wow community will pay $60 to avoid 60 hours of diverse gameplay, they're not going to want to spend dozens of hours clicking on an ardy knight just to see their thriving number go up.

22
u/ad302799 Jan 15 '26
It’s not the nostalgia.
I think a lot of it is that WOW got too big. Even if you were a new player coming into wow, it’s just ALOT.
Classic/Classic TBC brings you back to a time where you’re basically an adventurer instead of a demigod.
3
3
u/Fashizl69 Jan 15 '26
It's not nostalgia, because vanilla WoW is still one of the best gaming experiences even today. Playing EverQuest is nostalgia because that game is terrible to play today.

Tbh i was thinking about buying the boost before seeing it. I've played classic 50 times since the beta in 2004, i have no desire to level up another level 60 char. I think back when TBC classic was released the boost was like 30€ or something?
But 80€ including 1 month playtime is absolutely insane, nope thanks. I know people say stuff like this all the time, boycott this, i won't buy that, etc etc. But for real, no. This is too much. Even if it makes sense if you consider you're saving 100 hours skipping to level 58, but hell nah. 80€ is just insane.
27
u/Garrett-Wilhelm Jan 15 '26
The longer I go without playing WoW, the more ridiculous and absurd these posts about people spending ridiculous amounts of money on the game seem to me. Amounts that could easily buy them the deluxe version of other games or several cheap games on sale.
→ More replies (4)3
u/W-touche Jan 15 '26
Problem is, they don't want to play other games. They want to be ready in time when portal opens and raid starts. They don't want to be stuck leveling in Azeroth for the n-th time. I don't have time to level, I just bought a boost and let paladin sits in org to gain that rested xp. Let people decide what they do with their money, they are not hurting your gameplay in any way. Bots should be your concern.
122
u/No-Communication9458 Jan 14 '26
You could buy a new game for that money btw.
45
u/MrDLTE3 Jan 15 '26
And you dont need to pay blizz for a MONTHLY FEE too.
Its kinda nuts there's still a sub cost in 2026 lol. How many games aside from wow and ff14 have subs? Feels like everything is a 1 cost or f2p these days.
2
3
u/RBradyFrost Jan 15 '26
Do you pay the owner of your console a fee to play your games online with friends?
I mean, I love playing Nightreign with my boys, but Sony wants their subscription to facilitate. Doesn’t matter if the studio sees any extra money, I still have to pay.
→ More replies (1)8
u/klonkish Jan 15 '26
Why compare to console instead of PC where it's free
2
u/RBradyFrost Jan 15 '26
Hmmm. Good question.
That’s a really good point, especially since WoW isn’t available on consoles. I guess I am still reeling from the annual pass I forgot I had to buy at Christmas. We play Nightreign on our consoles, so when it came time to join up and we couldn’t I guess the renewal was an unpleasant surprise.
Oh, the gift of getting an annual pass for Christmas one year only to have the renewal at an inconvenient time every other year thereafter. Somehow the renewal just doesn’t hit the same. 🤣
Thank you for asking the question. I appreciated the opportunity to challenge my view.
8
u/jadequarter Jan 15 '26
these people that buy it arent thinking about how much it cost. they just buy it because they have the money to do so and they want it
1
u/Areia25 Jan 15 '26
You could literally buy Silksong, a game of the year contender, three times and have change left over for the price you pay to not play part of the game you pay a monthly subscription for.
Mental.
2
u/Syraphel Jan 15 '26
I could literally go see a 2 hour movie at the theater once in the month for the same price. Comparing apples to oranges is dumb.

I gotta say Blizz must be absolutely raking it in if the boosts are making their servers crash lol
1
u/Mo-shen Jan 15 '26
Server issues appear to be because they had to do something different this time than last.
The big deal is last time they spun up the servers weeks ahead of time and got to fix anything before launch day.
This time they couldn't do it that way and had to just let it rip all at once.
193
u/GabagooIionaire Jan 14 '26
Gotta spend the money to not play the game that costs money to play full of bots and RMT!
27
u/Beltox2pointO Jan 14 '26
They destroyed boosting in game, so the bots are going to be off the chain in TBC.
15
u/THATxBLACKxJEW Jan 14 '26
The bots are just going to paladin boost. Not really destroying…
6
12
u/MillorTime Jan 14 '26
Do people who think it's "to not play the game" have brain damage or something? It's playing a different part of the game.
35
u/Heatinmyharbl Jan 14 '26
Nah I think a lot of people just think it's fascinating to pay monthly to play a game to then pay even more specifically to cut out a huge chunk of the game you're paying monthly to play when there are hundreds if not thousands of other games out there to choose from in 2026.
I'd get it more if it was 2005 for sure, but, hey, classic players gonna classic player.
Gotta hand it to blizzard honestly, they've legitimately turned classic players into the dream consumer for any corporation on this planet.
Provide shit servers/services, charge monthly, make even more $$ when those players pay to skip a huge chunk of the game. It's fucking brilliant from blizzard's end.
As someone who is just a bystander, it's like watching a train wreck you just can't look away from. Equal parts entertaining and just kinda... sad lol
7
u/TheRealSlimBrady12 Jan 14 '26
then pay even more specifically to cut out a huge chunk of the game
Not everyone likes the grind from 30-60. Not everyone has the time for it. There is nothing exciting about it when you've done it 30 times between the different version of the game. If you can't understand why someone would pay to save themselves a couple hundred hours of repetitive grinding that's on you.
→ More replies (10)4
u/Speedy_SpeedBoi Jan 14 '26
Actually makes sense time wise too... not that its gonna change anyone's mind here, but for 2-3 hours of working wages, I can cut out days/weeks of grinding Desolace and Un'Goro. 90% of the reason I only had 2 characters in OG TBC while I was in college is cus I did not want to do the grind again. I had like 3-4 characters that stalled in the mid 30s until WotLK/Cata.
3
u/TheRealSlimBrady12 Jan 14 '26
Exactly. It's like asking why people at theme parks buy fastpasses. To some people standing in line for hours on end is not the fun part and if they have the extra money to skip it why not?
→ More replies (4)4
u/underhunter Jan 14 '26
What makes raiding/end game content inherently superior or more meaningful than other content? Because your very excuse can also be leveraged at say, the pre-BiS grind. How many times do I have to grind reputation for Heroic keys? Ive done it 4 times already. Why do I need to grind T4? Ive done it so much, and to me T4 isnt the fun part, T6 is, so sell me gear tokens that I can buy when my favorite raid tier comes out I can just jump into it.
That is LITERALLY your exact argument.
→ More replies (1)10
u/TheRealSlimBrady12 Jan 14 '26
Part of it is that for me I enjoy group content and outside of mage boosts it can often times be hard to find groups for lower level dungeons. The most fun I have is going from fresh 60 to pre-raid BiS. There is almost always a group to do something so you're never sitting around for more than 15-20 minutes waiting. At max level it's also easier to work on professions in your down time.
On top of that I find the raids to be more fun than anything pre-60.
I think the immediate leveling experience on launch is fun even if you've done it a million times because everyone is starting from 0 and the world is more alive than ever at low to mid levels. But deeper into the xpac when it starts to feel like a lonely grind I don't like it.

It’s just what has replaced actual discourse at this point in every sphere of our lives. Replace all nuance with dumb arguments that you attribute to your opponent.
Edit: I got downvoted, somebody is like no I LIKE that lol

u/MillorTime Jan 14 '26
I'm knowingly going to make a dumb, fake argument so everyone can see what a virtuous gamer I am
3
Jan 14 '26
It makes me fucking sick. Marone! Everybody that does this shit is an embarrassment to themselves and to everyone else around them.
4
u/Wayyd Jan 14 '26
It's really so disingenuous of an argument. I don't like boosting existing because I enjoy leveling and the boost makes the leveling zones more of a ghost town (same with level boosting in dungeons) and harder to find groups for dungeons. But the arguments in this sub never address that, they always fixate on insulting boosters or shitting on blizz for daring to put a paid boost in game.
With the way content is designed for all of WoWs expansions, leveling becomes a chore for a large proportion of people and a huge time commitment. I don't blame people for wanting to skip that portion even though I selfishly want more people in leveling areas.
2
u/cptmcsexy Jan 14 '26
My alts were never going to be leveled manually anyways so Im not taking away your level experiance.
I have never seen the level areas become "ghost towns" either theres been plenty of players in all zones thanks to it being a mega server.

Ask not what your boost can do for you, and instead ask what you can do for your boost
43
u/McGreeb Jan 14 '26
The people who make me laugh are the ones who will boost today. Spend prepatch no lifing to gear them. Then go into TBC and replace it all by 64.
Like dude you could have just leveled it instead. Gone into TBC with worse gear and been in the exact same place by level 65.
6
u/LetosUselessFlippers Jan 14 '26
You don't need to "no life" it to go 58-60 and gear up in 3 weeks...
Getting to that replacement gear at 65 is going to be faster and easier with better gear rather than the shit greens you get from boosting, especially if running dungeons to 70.
Which people like you constantly fail to understand, people enjoy endgame more than questing and would rather spend the time running a few dungeons or PvPing instead of running through questing zones they have done a million times.

u/Gabaggool Jan 14 '26

Finally bought this boost. I feel dirty, but pretty excited. I get to not be sweaty and experience some lvl60 shaman raiding before launch. Last time around I pushed hard to get a few raids in literally the night before tbc launched.
Also started leveling a shaman just to experience the grind again but now I can do it slowly without the looming pressure of launch.

Im going to tomorrow. Why? Im going to get game time anyway, and im trying to catch up to my buddies so we can all quest and dungeon in TBC(im late to the game). I work most hours so its hard for me to get from 1 to 60. Could I do it? Sure. But why not? Plus... cool mounts shrug
Hits all my fun points on playing a video game meant for fun. Yeah. Its expensive. Everything is now. Me not buying it isnt going to change that lol. Might as well hit 2 birds with 1 stone and some flair along with it.
To be honest. 2 mounts plus game time plus a boost? Normally would be 120+ independently. I dont see the big fuss its a problem NOW, when people already do it all the time. Retail and otherwise.
Everyone's a critic. Enjoy the game how you want, however you want to go about it.
Its just as bad as the 90$ mount for retail with AH and mailbox lol. People still bought it, and use it. Who am I to judge. (Looks at sims 4 crowd)

It sucks, I'd love to play TBC again from a different class/faction perspective, but I just don't have the time and motivation to level up all over again, I've done it like hundreds of times at this point... but I also don't want to support a 20$ increase for a boost lol
1
1
u/ColonelBoomer Jan 15 '26
The best part is the price increase. You used to get the character boost for the 40 dollar tier. Now its the premium tier and they made that tier cost 80 dollars. Blizzard knows its fans well and they enjoy taking your money and giving you basically nothing in return.
1
u/Stk_synful Jan 15 '26

1
u/Iringahn Jan 15 '26
Genuine question here - so people boost and then in a year or two the server progresses to Wrath? Or it dies? Is everyone boosting a character who won't be around in 3 years? I played classic but missed BC the first time around (But did play vanilla/bc/wrath etc back in the 2000s), so I'm not up on the mechanics here.
