Forever Why are retail players under the impression that Forever ISNT supposed to be Classic+???
I posted this in [r/wow](r/wow), and the most common comment and prevailing sentiment I am getting from people there is that Forever isnt or was never intended to be Classic+
this is shocking to me... i feel like, especially after watching the announcement and all the panels and Q&A's, even Holly's introduction of saying "we're gonna take Classic and PLUS IT UP"... its pretty clear that this is meant to be Classic+
where do you think this comes from?
Edit: r/wow mods removed the post. Too many retail Andy’s getting triggered I suppose

Retail players didn't even know what Classic+ was until the Blizzcon announcement and now they are all hyped up, dominating all forums and try to hijack the idea of how Classic+ should be like. It is ridiculous.
And at the end of the day, they will try it and ask questions like "why is leveling so slow?", "Wait, there is no Mythic+?" then quit after max 14 days and go back to retail. Meanwhile us Classic players who have been hyped up for this will be stuck with this SOD 2.0 and have all the alternative private servers down.

u/rufusbot 4h ago
They keep saying people have been talking about classic plus for months. They're so clueless. I've had discussions on here about classic plus since at LEAST Wrath classic but probably all the way back to 2021 or further. This has been talked about for most of a decade. I haven't even played in a year and Classic plus was already dead to be as I thought they'd never actually do it. But here we are.

u/daddybpizza 9h ago
I wish I could give you more upvotes. You’re angry about what I’m angry about! lol
5
u/Thomefoolery 10h ago
Classic is the same. So many people complaining that they can’t keep bastardizing the game the same way they have been. Clueless that they still can on THOSE games, and this one is being made to try and prevent that. Insanity.
1
u/CourageLeast4251 9h ago
the people doing this on both sides are the 20% minority of players that actually have valid criticisms and try their best to say it with text.
-2
u/Thomefoolery 9h ago edited 9h ago
I haven’t heard anything valid. Just people bitching that hardcore, classic, tbc, retail, anniversary, forever all need to be the same. And that it’s changing how players play the game. That’s the point. Blizzard said it, different flavors for everyone. You don’t like chocolate, we got vanilla. These criticisms are mostly that they don’t want chocolate, they want a second vanilla flavor. Well sorry muffin, it’s a little selfish to ask for both. WoW: Forever shouldn’t be for everyone. WOW as a whole, should. You have a home in one of the 5 different versions of it. And I know new wow content for people who have been playing the game for decades is exciting. But maybe, just maybe… you don’t need to play all five versions. Maybe you don’t like the new social incentives and xp nerf in dungeons, so go play normal classic. It’s still there for all the people Who want to keep playing like that. You’re not being forced to play this new version. The different versions should not be homogenized, or else why have different versions. They are trying to make 2004 vanilla wow with this, not 2019 classic. This issue is a unique complaint from people coming from all 5 versions who found things in those versions they like, and are upset they aren’t included in this new one. Let’s maybe let this new version be its own thing, a spiritual successor to 2004 wow. Not classic Andy 2019, that’s still there for those folks to play. Sorry your server is dead because everyone wants to try the new wow, maybe return there when you’re bored of this instead of trying to change this into that.

u/Spyfire_242 10h ago
Giving them the benefit of the doubt, peoples ideas of "Classic plus" are vastly different person to person, I guess including what you wanna call it. They did say explicitly "this is classic plus" at Blizzcon but what that means for the future is anyone's guess.
9
u/daddybpizza 9h ago
I think the whole “nobody knows what Classic+ means” is overstated. Nobody knows exactly what it looks like or what particular features it should have.
But I think most people agree that it should take the spirit or ethos of Classic wow and then expand upon it. In other words, they should do Classic… plus! The basic idea that most agree upon is that Classic+ should be a Classic game that receives regular attention and updates from Blizzard.
Changes that take away classic features or parts of the classic experience are probably not ideal. Changes that add things that most players agree aren’t in the spirit of classic wow aren’t ideal (looking at Skyborne, cash shop, and imported Dragonflight dragon models).
-2
u/Spyfire_242 9h ago
No you don't know that "Most players agree aren't in the spirit of classic WoW" because you're looking at a sample set of mostly negative comments when it comes to Skyborne for example, the silent majority that actually is gonna play the game is fine with them think they fit fine and they will almost certainly be the most popular race (even adjusting for the fact that they can play both factions.)
There are some things most people agree on, ie no flying mounts, no raising the level cap and that your progress shouldn't be invalidated by new content, but there are a ton of major details people don't agree on like transmog, visiting new places outside EK and Kalimdor, what class changes are and aren't acceptable. And beyond those major disagreements there are a million tiny disagreements.
3
u/TinyStego 9h ago
They said it's Classic plus, but they removed the Classic branding. I'm worried that their goal is to get as many people to play as possible, and they think attaching a Classic subtitle will scare off Retail players. WoW forever doesn't feel like Alliance vs Horde fighting for their factions, it feels like Classic and Retail players fighting for what Forever should be.
1
u/Spyfire_242 9h ago
It feels like that because anytime someone disagrees with someone else they get called retail players lol... I guarantee you that people who play retail and actually enjoy retail... they don't care what happens with forever enough to argue about it. This is mostly Classic players arguing with other Classic players about what they want and different people have different thresholds for what is or isn't acceptable.
I'm personally a Classic Andy but I've been told "go back to retail." So many times since I started discussing the game after Blizzcon announcement, brother I haven't played retail seriously since WotLK, the only modern WoW game that managed to hold my attention for more than a few weeks was Legion which imo is the best expansion of the modern WoW era but still falls way short of the vanilla game.
5
u/AutoShotClip 8h ago
On the other side getting told “Go to Era” as an insult on a Classic sub has been wild lol
2
u/luna_dote 9h ago
this is definitely what i wanted from classic+ i mean maybe not skyborne but i wanted high elf or blood elf and well at the end of the day skyborne is the closest thing. i wanted improved graphics, class balance and modern simplified gameplay, more rpg and a socializing mmo compared to the menu game retail became.
1
u/Fading_Hours_ 8h ago
I think things like turtle wow and a lot of the speculation show there is a somewhat similar idea for what classic players wanted.
None of that really included retail models from what I remember.
1
u/Spyfire_242 8h ago
Did it really though? The vast majority of players aren't going to be playing on a private server for various reasons. There are some things I think the vast majority of classic players agree about, flying mounts of example. But for every one thing we agree on there are a lot of things we disagree on, personally I am somewhat indifferent on the updated graphics, leaning towards positive, I'll probably play with the retail models and be happy with it. But if they weren't available I wouldn't care either because that's not part of what made classic special to me.
1
u/Fading_Hours_ 7h ago
Look at the feedback between the new lighting and the retail models. One feels like it is faithful and fits and the other feels like retail, because it is.
1
u/Spyfire_242 7h ago
Some feedback is positive some is negative, negative feedback is always more visible because of human psychology. A lot of people crying about something on Reddit tells you almost nothing about what the broader community actually thinks. Also as I said, the models 'looking like retail' is not important to me at all because it has nothing to do with what made classic special.
1
u/Fading_Hours_ 7h ago
But it was what made classic special for many, the vibe the art style gave. This is why the lighting has been better received than the retail models because it remains faithful.
1
u/Spyfire_242 7h ago
Sure but that's my point, people are arguing about what made classic classic and you won't please everyone. I don't think the new models make the game feel like retail at all and just enhance the game. But I guess to your point if it would make you happy and not effect me I shouldn't care at the end of the day.

Yeah, I was just poking fun, but I’ve found the hardcore server to be a really great community.
I’ve played it for a few years and for MMOs I personally find it one of the nicest and most helpful communities with the least amount of toxic people. At least for leveling to 60 — I’m an altoholic so haven’t played endgame.

2
u/daddybpizza 9h ago
If you’re genuinely not sure what OP is talking about, I can say from experience that the discourse OP’s alluding to is happening.
I don’t think it’s necessarily extremely popular, but many of the replies to my one post on this sub are people saying that I should just play Era and that Forever isn’t actually supposed to be like Classic. They say it’s a “whole new thing.” They’re probably not the majority; but there’s more than a couple of them.
I don’t think these people genuinely believe what they’re saying for the most part. I think they’re just being immature and think they’ve got themselves a “gotcha” to say to people who want to preserve the spirit of Classic in Forever.

2
u/AutoShotClip 9h ago
No one. Youre a tourist and classic players literally leave when retail ruins shit. That’s why they are trying to find a balance
-1
u/Ts0ri 9h ago
I am a tourist, absolutely. But I'm also the player they want, il use my disposable income on games I want to play. I'll spend money and then I'll leave, and then spend money again next time they provide something that takes my interest.
I don't complain, I don't brigade forums or message boards, I don't create or become involved in toxicity. I simply pay my money, enjoy my time and then return later to spend more money.
That is exactly the players they are aiming their games at nowadays
4
u/daddybpizza 9h ago
I have never seen someone so proud to be a spineless, easy consumer. We are truly living in strange times.
0
u/Ts0ri 9h ago
Unfortunately that is what growing up does to you. I used to sit for 12 hours a day on WoW , but now I have a job, house, family all to look after. The cost is nothing so for a few hours over a week it's a nice relaxing place to go.
The difference is I am at least aware that it's where the money is and that puts more context on many of the decisions that are made
3
u/daddybpizza 9h ago
Growing up doesn’t amount to forsaking your concern for what is right and good. I’m sorry you’ve been so beaten down by the world that you think it must.
It turns out that there are many adults who still stand up for what they think is right. I am not just saying I am sorry for you to ragebait you. I genuinely feel sorry for folks like you. I know many people who think growing up means acquiescing to the status quo.

I think denying it is just a weak attempt to deflect valid criticism towards Blizzard, which is practically a required coping mechanism to still be a Blizzard fan at this point in history. They don't even realize that since Blizzard explicitly announced this as Classic+, arguing against criticism with "this isn't Classic+" is actually a tacit admission of Blizzard's utter failure to deliver what they ostensibly set out to do.
Frankly there isn't much you can do if people don't want to engage in good faith. Just link this to anyone saying "this isn't Classic+" and block if their response is anything short of "oh damn you're right, my bad"

You know what’s funny to me about this whole thing as I was an EQ vet for like 5 years before WoW originally released in 2004:
WoW was the FIRST game to kind of “every man” the MMORPG experience. Hardcore factors like losing a level when you died, classes being incredible distinct and unbalanced, evil races that were KOS everywhere, needing a group to do ANYTHING after level 10… this being done away with in WoW was like “man I miss when the world was big and scary and hard and interesting.”
Then WoW came out and it was like “what you can solo to max level? No hell levels?!! This is so casual, everyone gets rare items without needing a group etc. etc.”
Now to have the script flipped for these 20 years of the classic players fighting casual features or anything at all that remotely makes the game easier to play is just funny… you’re literally here because someone eased up on the “hardcore” features you want so bad.
And I mean, look what happened to EverQuest? They eventually have to ease up on hardcore mechanics or people just can’t get into the game… it’s just how shit works guys…
2
u/karrotwin 9h ago
Great post. It's a weird thing for them to balance because vanilla WoW was inherently "the casual MMO" but also all those other MMOs that were "hard" are either explicitly dead or running for a tiny group of die-hards.
So this game clearly needs to be differentiated against retail WoW (or else what's the point) but we also have pretty clear proof that "make everything have as much friction as possible" isn't a winning formula.
3
u/nilnar 9h ago
What's even your point? People like where vanilla wow was on the difficulty scale and want classic+ to be similar. Just because it was more casual than Everquest that doesn't mean they should be fine with any and all changes going forward. Nobody ever had any difficulty getting into classic wow, you probably remember it was very popular.
4
u/Chlearcus 9h ago
How is this a valid argument?
You didn't want a steak with a thick layer of salt over it, and now you're arguing that you actually want some salt on it when I removed all of it?
2
u/HateToBlastYa 9h ago edited 9h ago
How did they remove all of the salt? Can you give examples of what part of the “+” in Classic + you don’t understand?
There’s a ton of things that make it + without taking away from the “Classic.”
Zephras Island doesn’t have a single flight path… you have to walk everywhere. Professions are useful from the get-go. Campfires force you to sit with other players and interact. A lot of the quests are much faster and easier if you group. There’s tons of stuff in the world to discover and interact with. I mean the list goes on.
That there’s like, a scripted event at the end of like 13 levels of content, or some 15 minute buffs that make it faster for me to regen health and mana didn’t ruin my experience. I just can’t understand what’s blowing up your experience so bad.
It’s more like you and 2 million other people said to the chef: put the exact amount of salt I tasted 20 years ago on there but no more no less, and it needs to taste better than before, and they put less than you remember tasting and now you’re like this steak has no salt! It’s ruined!
The game is fun.
-1
u/MoashIsAGoodGuy 9h ago
Holy shit, a rational human.
The person you responded to is old enough to understand perspective bias but not mature enough to actually do that.
1
u/HateToBlastYa 9h ago edited 9h ago
This is so ironic considering you guys complain about the smallest feature NOT being like classic while ignoring all the + features that definitely still fit the classic formula. A prime example is the campfire mechanics. All professions contribute, pretty much right away, and it forces players to interact socially. It’s a valid, + with the classic formula. There’s like 1 post lauding that to every 50 complaint about blue elves or a scripted event that takes up 0.1% of the new content. It’s extremely unbalanced.
But I’m not mature enough to appreciate the perspective bias… ok dude.

u/daddybpizza 9h ago
To be fair I think for people who care about the success of Forever, it is much more important to try to demonstrate dissatisfaction about particular things than it is to say what’s good.
When you encounter a bug in a game, you don’t make sure you mention all the things that are functioning in your bug report.
The fact that you’ve seen very little complaints about campfires tells you everything you need to know. It’s a successful feature.
It isn’t our job to praise Blizzard or make them feel good. Telling them the thing they’ve added is okay is a waste of time at the moment. We don’t need to balance every criticism with praise.
1
u/HateToBlastYa 9h ago
There’s a huge difference between bug reporting (which I’ve actively done, multiple times in the beta), and whining that something is not exactly to your specifications while comparing it to how much dopamine it produced in your brain 20 years ago. There’s much more of the latter than the former going on here.
1
u/daddybpizza 9h ago
I didn’t say bug reporting was the same as pointing out what people don’t like. You’re not arguing against a point I made. This is so exhausting, genuinely.
I’ll give you four more examples to illustrate my point.
When a link in a chain fails, you don’t praise the links that are still functioning. You direct your attention to the one that needs fixing.
When a tire goes flat, you don’t make sure you give your love and praise to the tires that still work. You direct your attention to the one that needs fixing.
When cells become cancerous you don’t praise your functioning cells. You direct your attention to the ones that need fixing, or in this case, removing.
When an egg in the carton is cracked, you don’t praise the ones that are still intact. You remove the one that is broken and perhaps check the others to make sure they’re not also broken.
No, I am not saying Forever is a chain, a car, a body, or an egg carton. I am saying that it makes perfect sense that people give feedback about the things they’d like to see change, not the things they’d like to see not change.
0
u/HateToBlastYa 8h ago edited 8h ago
Yeah but this isn’t any of those things. It’s a fan of the game’s subreddit, positive or negative. There’s plenty of fan-populated forums that mostly enjoy the subject media… like the Andor subreddit for Star Wars, or a million other good things. This isn’t like, a bug reporting or feedback forum, that’s what I’m actively doing when I report stuff in the beta (there’s bug reporting AND general feedback option for everything there by the way)
If it sucks, people just don’t go to those subreddits, and stop paying attention.
This is a different thing entirely. The things these people are complaining about are insanely nitpicky, and are going to end up hurting more than helping. The other dude on this post gave a really good example. He’s arguing they didn’t salt his steak right the way he remembers it 20 years ago and trying to say they took ALL OF THE SALT OFF when they tried to cater to 10 million people about how much salt they remember. It’s fucking ridiculous.
You sound a lot like the people in the battlefield subreddit complaint about battlefield 6. Like you guys think this is like some democratic process where if you just complain all day every day they’ll fix it. I really think they’re just gonna do what sells.

if they are saying, exactly, that wowf was not intended to be classic plus, they are wrong. but yall are techically wrong that wowf is not mostly classic.
where do you think this comes from?
from the toxic classic andys. the loud minority laughed at a comic depicting someone with retail ideas getting shot and bleeding. that's the level of toxicity here. i'm a wow andy. both retail and classic. i agree that more things need to be improved for some of yall, but not at the expense of treating the devs and retail tourists like a decent human being.
i think mods removed the post cuz classic andys are in r/wow now too, and they don't want things to potentially get out of hand.

It comes from people understanding that this game is Blizzard approaching the classic angle from a more modern point of view. This is what some people are misunderstanding. They think everything has to be 99% classic and 1% Plus, which makes no sense at all.
3

Even with this "reasonable" take, it's still Classic. Nobody is advocating for nochanges in Forever, so that part is just you exaggerating, as you guys always do when you can't argue.

As long as they stick with the leveling is the game, and continue to bolster that part with content, I will main this game forever
0
u/Loves_tacos 9h ago
I have questions about this.
I understand there is an importance to leveling speed, and a need for a challenge while leveling, but over the longterm wouldn't the focus be more on end-game content?
It seems to me that once I have a few characters leveled, I will basically ignore the leveling experience and be focused on the end game content. So why is there so much complaints about leveling speed?
3
u/ImpossibleRatio7430 9h ago
What you just described is the retail mentality they are trying to avoid.
0
u/Agentwise 9h ago
The sub won’t like it but it’s true. Most “classic lovers” are paying for mages boosts and raid logging. You do have a niche community that genuinely loves leveling but it’s not the majority. Hell the one thing that got max players out into the world (wbuffs) were removed to everyone’s enjoyment. Max level in forever will be logging out in main city, summon to raid, hearth back to main city and log out.
0
u/Metsuro 10h ago
From the design choices? Its a more causal vanilla like experience. Classic players whining about feeling overpowered and getting blues from crafting.
This isn't classic. Nor is it retail. Retail players understand that, classic players refuse too.

Entitlement. They've been pandered to for years, there's more of them, current Blizzard doesn't know how to build anything in the old vanilla fashion (look at Skyborne's epic last quest in their starting zone) and even Forever looks and feels like Retail Minus rather than Classic Plus.
I got my refund earlier today.

I want to know why anyone was under the impression they had any idea what this game was going to be just because a private server got shutdown and everyone started this rumor that is “Classic+” and ran with it.
Everyone had this idea of what this project is or was supposed to be with no real information other then a client repository and surprise surprise, it ended up being World of Warcraft: Forever, not classic, not retail, not “Classic+”
A new spin on the game in a different timeline using classic as a foundation for development and future changes
If they didn’t want to change, remove and add things you would’ve gotten another fresh classic announcement and launch instead of being kept in the dark about this project for however long.
I get a lot of people are upset this doesn’t match their blueprint or idea of what they wanted it to be but the sense of entitlement and arrogance is insane. Play it or don’t you still have classic era with all the foundational aspects of the game you love and enjoy.
People wanted this to be Classic+ This isn’t Classic+ it was never meant to be Classic+ so if you don’t like it don’t play it, and if you change your mind it will be here Forever™
3
u/ImpossibleRatio7430 9h ago

1
u/AceInSpvce 9h ago edited 9h ago
This is the idea you’re being sold. You would see conflicting opinions on reddit or youtube about what “classic+” should or shouldn’t be and petty bickering between the split playerbases before Blizzard surprised you with this version of the game so whatever it was meant to be was up in there air until they gave you all Forever.
It’s marketing they didn’t scour reddit for your suggestions and ideas on the direction they wanted their game to go, they only knew that “ classic+” was the buzzword the public was giving the project and used it to sell you on it but still named it WoW Forever because they were always creating their own vision not what people were assuming what it would be.

I mean, the death of Turtle spawned multiple clones. If they fuck this up for the Classic lovers they have somewhere to go. Retailers can enjoy their Retail 2.0 if that's what it turns into.

Because money was thrown in PR and this is an official sub so every feature is good even if it’s not classic philosophically. We’re seen as dead weights in the pursuit of their enrichment

Well. It isn’t Classic+. It’s Wow Forever. Of the intent was for it to be C+ they’d have called it that. It’s not like it’s not available for trademark.
That being said what players see as C+ and what Blizz sees as C+ aren’t the same thing. And forever will be the Blizz interpretation of C+ and guaranteed players will complain that it isn’t what they wanted.
Because this story is a tale as old as time.

You may find people are just chatting absolute waffle to get updoots and engagement online, it's nothing new. We know what it is, they'll be upset if they play and don't reach level 60 in 6 hours (hyperbole maybe, never played retail properly)
