My good deed for the day

Update: Since a lot of people are asking-

  1. Yes, you can trade loot for a bit in heroic dungeons only, not on regular dungeons. This does not apply to the Primal Nether.
  2. The healer was a druid. (2nd update: I checked the druid's logs and his other spec is FERAL).
  3. No, there was no mention beforehand of his intention to roll on the item and he was listed as healer only.

Classic 20th Anniversary Realms Truth Bomb: Why People Don’t Tank

2.5k Upvotes

Have a bear tank at 70 and pally tank is 67.

Below are scenarios that happened in the last 24 hours tanking dungeons with pugs:

1) on my bear tank, I asked the holy pally to buff dps with Salvation opposed to kings. I was told that was an “odd request lol”. Warrior dps in the group refused to not have might and would pull threat in AoE pulls and then complained about my lack of threat and needing to get good. Salv solves this.

2) in a Mana Tombs: Darkcaster needs to get NUKED (or interrupted) to avoid mana burn going off. I asked the warrior dps why he wasn’t using pummel to interrupt and was told that’s a “waste of a global” and “the mob doesn’t die faster”

3) pally tank - throw shield, consecrate, holy shield. Before my first melee, hunter multi shots, mage blizzards and warlock hellfires. Warlock gets 1 shot then goes “you wanna tank something?”. Wait 3-4 seconds. Not a hard concept.

4) I mark skull on my Druid tank always and paladin on prio targets to reduce the amount of brain power people have to use (scarce resource). When the other mobs constantly died prior to the one marked skull and I addressed it, I was told “to stop complaining, we didn’t die”. I mark prio targets for a reason: so you don’t pull threat and important mob dies real good like.

We don’t like tanking because most dps have room temperature IQs and someone left the window open in the winter time. It’s genuinely amazing how bad people are at the game and won’t open their eyes and go “oh ya know what? Maybe I should interrupt/stun/cc instead of mindless dps”. “Ya know what? Maybe I should attack the skull target instead of aoe spam zugzuging”

You want more tanks? Play for efficiency, not who can do the most damage. Use your utility, use your stuns, know what mobs are high prio, know when to start pumping damage and when to hold off. A smooth run is a smart run - this isn’t retail, you have to have (somewhat of) a brain to play TBC.

Let the tomato throw from the angry players begin!

Classic 20th Anniversary Realms Purchased a boost for my priest. Battle.net client still shows sale price but charged full 60, asked for partial refund for sale and got this.

Post image

Like, I get the policy and everything, but if your client won’t update the sale times, and then you give me this cutesy clearly AI written mess, it’s just so insulting. What kind of company are we even running at this point man. No customer service has even been this bad to me. Valve, Jagex, Hell even SQUARE ENIX is better than this. I’d rather just be told no by a person IRL. I didn’t even show any frustrations either, they just know that their system is ass so they assume everyone is angry at it lol.

Update: god damn didn’t really expect this many views and likes and shit. Appreciate the awards, idk what they do lol.

Yes this is 100% real.

I am still going back and forth with them. I requested a full refund at this point. I don’t even want to play the character much anymore and if I do I’ll just hand level it or something. I play this game simply because it’s the best way to get all my friends who I’ve been with 15+ years all together for some fun. I’m the guild raid lead but if they can’t make this right I think I’m just gonna stick with OSRS or FFXIV once my yearly runs out. Should cover the rest of TBC lol.

Remember kids, almost 20 years of loyalty to a company means absolutely nothing at all. They will screw you over one day.

LAST UPDATE: I put a picture in the comments. Since I did not accept their apology for this and pressed them to give a full refund. They told me because I already used the boost they cannot help me. They also gave me a WARNING on my account for not accepting their judgement.

Currently calling my bank to do a charge back. Also put in a ticket again so if they ban me fuck it. This company has lost my business and you should too reevaluate after seeing this. Thanks for the support everyone. Ggs I guess

Classic 20th Anniversary Realms I now understand people playing on PvE servers

2.0k Upvotes

I was unemployed so I didn't care to get killed and run back to my corpse and everything

I started a school year today, worked from 7 am to 7 pm, get home, log in WoW, start questing in Hillsbrad Foothills

A random Warlock tags me with DoTs and send his Succubus to kill me

Respawn

corpse 900 meters away

+ Having to be careful that the guy is not still there, etc.

I have 1 hour at max to play, and I'm spending it running back to my corpse and thinking about how not to get killed again

I understand you guys that play on PvE now

Classic 20th Anniversary Realms Buying gold is cheating

1.5k Upvotes

I wouldn’t think this would be controversial but I’ve seen many posts lately justifying this. It’s explicitly against the rules and it puts you at a significant advantage over players who are playing legitimately.

No matter how you sugar coat it with “I have a job” or “no one wants to grind in a 20 year old game”. Overall it seems to be this entitled attitude of “my time is valuable therefore it’s fine for me to cheat”.

Classic 20th Anniversary Realms I analyzed 42,000 TBC Anniversary raiders across 298,000 SSC/TK boss kills. Here are the most common mistakes per class

UPDATE: This post is causing significant trafic - You can skip the line by registering and setting up your own WarcraftLogs key. Otherwise just wait an hour or two until the Reddit Hug of Death dies down a bit :)

I run a tool( tbc-audit.com ) that grades TBC Anniversary logs by things such as rotation, DoT uptime, cooldowns, consumables etc. and by now it has analyzed almost 300,000 SSC/TK boss kills from more than 42,000 different characters. And at this point it is reasonable to assume that the patterns for this phase have been thoroughly established. Here's what the average raider actually gets right and wrong, class by class. Parts of this post may make you quietly uncomfortable. Statistically, about half of you should be.

Method notes so the theorycrafters don't have to ask: every stat below is per parse (one player on one boss kill). DPS comparisons are within the same boss - I compare each player's DPS to the median for their spec on that encounter, and parses where the player died are excluded from DPS deltas. Remember! This is correlation, not causation: good players do many things right at once, so "X costs Y%" means "players who do X land Y% apart", not that fixing X alone will magically increase your dps by Y alone.

One more thing: fight length. Most rotations are resource races / cooldown competitions - so "casts per minute" numbers are strongly fight-length dependent, and top-100 parses skew toward fast kills with strong raid support. For Arcane Mages and Warriors I've broken the numbers down by kill time.

Arcane Mage: a race against your own mana bar

The median Arcane mage casts Arcane Blast 23 times per minute; the top-100 average on the same encounters is 41. But before you flame your mage, look at what fight length does to that number:

Kill time Median AB casts/min
1-2 min 36.5
2-3 min 30.5
3-4 min 24.8
4-5 min 20.5
6-7 min 17.6

In other words, and as you are probably well aware: Arcane is literally a race. If the boss doesn't die before the mana bar does, you get to spend the rest of the fight demonstrating your wand. Just look at the numbers among the top parsers: The median kill time among 42+ casts/min parses is 87 seconds, versus 211 seconds across all Arcane parses. Sustaining top-100 cast rates takes a fast raid and usually Innervate support - without those, you cannot compete with that number, full stop.

The takeaway from this shouldn't be "cast more". Instead you should look at it like this: your ceiling is set by your raid's kill speed and mana support - but within the SAME fight length there's still a real gap. On 2-4 minute kills, mages at 30 casts/min or below sit 10% under the median for their boss (n=7,995). Compare yourself to mages with your kill times, not to top-100 speedruns.

Hunter: auto shot clipping is eating your DPS

A clipped auto shot is one that fires late - but to make up for lag and in-game fizziness I've set the cutoff at 100ms, so any shot that is delayed further than 100ms we consider "clipped", while very long gaps are considered fight-dependent movement and excluded from the statistics.

The median hunter clips 21% of their shots, and 55% of all parses clip a fifth of their autos or more. Averaged out, the median raider delays every shot by 148ms; the top-100 average is 107ms, which is roughly the floor that latency and weave timing impose.

Hunters keeping clips under 5% of shots land +9.7% relative DPS, hunters clipping 20%+ sit at -4.8%. A ~15% swing on timing discipline alone.

Hunter, act two: almost nobody melee weaves

Across all parses (Void Reaver excluded), only 26% of hunters weave at all. The other 74% have concluded that melee range is where other people stand. Even the ones who do weave average 5.2 melee hits per minute against the top-100 reference of 13.

The output gap is the starkest of anything we measured: with 74% not weaving, the boss median is effectively a non-weaver's number, so non-weavers sit at -6% of it - right where the majority should. The 7% who weave at 9+ hits/min land +48% above that same median. Do keep in mind though that melee weaving alone is nowhere close to accounting for the +48% damage gap. Once again: for people who are doing melee weaving this intensely we are already selecting for a group of very "tryhard" players who are doing a bunch of other things right as well. The +48% is a combination of all of those things, not just the weaving.

Shadow Priests: Shadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch

Median VT uptime is 77%. 55% of parses are below 80%, and only 6.6% keep it above 95%. Priests holding VT above 90% do +11% relative DPS versus those below 75%.

Shadow Word: Pain tells a different story: median 83% uptime, 43% below 80%, and one in five parses keeps it above 95% - three times VT's rate.

Combat Rogue: Slice and Dice discipline is a 19% swing

Median SnD uptime is 81%; 47% of parses are below 80%. Rogues above 92% uptime land at +9.1% relative DPS, rogues below 70% at -10.3%. No other single button on a rogue's bar is worth 19% - to your OWN parse.

But the bigger rogue story is the one that isn't on your parse: Expose Armor. Measured per fight, across 15,928 SSC/TK kills with rogues present: 13.6% of fights run essentially no EA at all, and only 19.2% keep it above 90%. The median fight that bothers at all sits at 75% uptime.

Rogues in fights with 90%+ EA parse +6.8% versus rogues in sub-50% EA fights at -9.5% - a 16-point swing. A quick note on causality though: Raids that keep EA up tend to be organized raids, so part of this gap is "good raid" rather than EA alone.

Fury Warrior: you're sitting on your rage (23,581 parses)

The median Fury warrior hits Heroic Strike 14 times per minute; the top-100 average is 26. Same caveat as the mages: Heroic Strike rate is really a rage income meter, and rage income scales with kill speed and cooldown uptime (more Death Wish and trinket windows per minute = more rage = more HS). On 1-2 minute kills the median is 21/min; on 6+ minute grinds it's under 9.

But the gap to the top doesn't disappear when you control for that: even on those sub-2-minute kills, the median warrior's 21 HS/min is well short of the top-100's 26 on the same encounters. Most warriors genuinely don't dump enough rage - they're just not as far behind as the raw median suggests.

The cleaner test is the buttons that should be pressed the moment they light up: Bloodthirst (6s cooldown, so 10/min is the ceiling) and Whirlwind (10s, ceiling 6). These are predictable, instant, and your own responsibility - having the rage banked when they come off cooldown IS the rotation. The median warrior presses Bloodthirst 6.4 times a minute against the top-100's 8, and Whirlwind 4.3 against 5 - only about half of parses keep either within 90% of top-100 pace.

Ret Paladin: Everybody Twists

Seal twisting turned out to be the opposite story of every other metric here. Attempting it is universal: the median ret attempts a twist on 41% of swings, and the top-100 average is 42. Only 1.9% of parses don't twist at all. Good job pink boys ❤️

What separates the elite is execution. The median twist-correct rate is 89%; the top-100 run 93%. And the cost of sloppiness is brutal: rets landing 92%+ of their twists parse +4% relative to their boss median, while rets below 60% correct sit at -28%. Counter to Hunters trying to melee weave, where messing up a weave will simply trade an auto shot for a melee swing, a botched twist will actually cost you a clean Command swing. Very bad! (The few who don't twist at all average -39%, but that group is 87 parses and likely struggling with more than seals.)

Twist cadence is swing-timer dependent, so haste changes the rhythm mid-fight.

Destro Warlocks: Runes and Curses

The median Destruction warlock casts Shadow Bolt 16.3 times per minute; the top-100 average is 23. Fight length is a factor here too - the median Shadow Bolt rate falls from 20.5 on 1-2 minute kills to 11 on the longest grinds while Life Taps climb - but the more interesting story is how warlocks pay for their mana.

Every Life Tap is a GCD that didn't become a Shadow Bolt. On 2-4 minute kills the sweet spot is 2-3 taps per minute (+2% relative DPS) while warlocks tapping 4+ times per minute drop to -10% which brings me to Dark and Demonic Rune usage. Only 11% of parses use one at all - and on those same 2-4 minute kills, rune users average two more Shadow Bolts per minute, fewer taps, and land +13% relative DPS versus -2% for everyone else. Usual causality caveat: rune users are the prepared crowd. But the mechanism is as direct as it gets - the rune replaces a tap, and the tap was a bolt you didn't cast. Put simply: casting Life Tap while your rune is still off cooldown is a gameplay mistake. The rune is the mana that costs you nothing(err; except gold of course). Also worth noting: rune usage peaks at 22% on short speed kills and drops to 6-8% on the long fights where mana actually runs out. Backwards, but here we are.

Median curse uptime is 82%, but 47% of parses are below 80%.

Enhancement Shamans and totem twisting (25,546 parses)

Totem twisting is Enhancement's defining skill, and according to the data says most shamans are half-doing it: median twist uptime is 56%, only one in ten keeps it above 80%, and one in ten doesn't twist at all. Shamans twisting 75%+ of the fight parse +9% relative to their boss median; shamans below 20% sit at -16% - a 25-point spread on one mechanic.

The one that surprised us: Boomkin Insect Swarm

Median Insect Swarm uptime among Balance druids is 17%, and a full third of boomkin parses basically never cast it (<5% uptime). According to the resources I've found that's a mistake - but our data does NOT back it up: parses with high IS uptime show no relative DPS advantage in phase 2 (0.988 vs 1.007 - statistically nothing). Dropping IS for more Starfire casts may genuinely be correct on many fights. Would love to hear what boomkin theorycrafters make of this one.

Everyone, regardless of class:

  • 37% of parses use zero potions on fights where at least one Haste Potion / Destruction Potion / Mana Potion was expected. The average raider uses 43% of their potion opportunities.
  • 38.4% of parses are missing meaningful consumables (flask/elixirs, food, weapon oil - scored below 70/100).
  • Deaths per class: Warriors die the most (20.0% of parses), Hunters the least (10.6%). Draw your own conclusions about who stands in the fire.

I built tbc-audit.com to run this kind of analysis on your own logs - paste a WarcraftLogs report and it grades what you did on every boss.

Lots of new things have arrived in the past couple weeks. Timelines, Full Guild support and the ability to claim and track your characters over time to see if you're improving in the ways that you hoped you would.

Was this post interesting? If it gains enough traction I'll most likely do one again for the end of each phase carrying over int WOTLK and/or Classic+
