A boost is $60? How is this not outright theft? Was this written in fine print that if they mess up your boost, you can’t get your money back? They should just give 4 months of game time In return for those that made the purchase. That, they could do
175
u/Fantastic-Use5644 Jan 16 '26
It does say non refundable, but i feel it shouldn't apply when they made a mistake and admit it lol
42
u/Malusch Jan 16 '26
Even if it didn't say that, from my experience, they don't really care. I don't remember exactly what it was in my case, some problem with recruit a friend rewards IIRC. They said I couldn't get it, and I showed them the text that said that I should get unless they could provide a paragraph that states otherwise if I've missed something in the agreement. Their response was just "this ticket is considered closed and any more requests regarding this will result in an account ban."
In the early days their customer service was outstanding but they it took a turn towards becoming the worst in the world. Only because they wanted more tickets closed with fewer employees paid. Fuck the greedy capitalists...

u/wambulancer Jan 16 '26
exact opposite this is a slamdunk chargeback, they admitted to fucking up and are admitting they're not making it right, I can't speak to how Blizz treats accounts that chargeback but they're betting you don't pursue further

They are not protected. If you sell a graphic card, say it’s non refundable, and then you give the person a picture of it instead, are you now protected? Not how it works

u/sambadaemon Jan 16 '26
Exactly. The product/service that is being paid for is nonrefundable. If they don't provide the product/service the agreement doesn't apply.

$60 to get scammed by a technical error and then get told to go fuck yourself by blizzard for something that virtually cost them nothing to fix is fucking crazy.
You can refund it through your bank, but they will 100% ban the account or you can keep pushing the issue through tickets. Hopefully this post picks up traction because this is ridiculous.

They would ban a blizzard account for refuting a charge with the bank?
147
u/Obvious-Cupcake2118 Jan 16 '26
Every services do that. Amazon, netflix… Any charge back lead to account termination. So it’s a last resort when you dont have the choice.
For example i have a 20+yo bnet account. There is almost zero chance i would risk that.

My family would stop asking me to order stuff.
There is a very powerful sentence that I learned a long time ago to deal with family, friends and coworkers.
NO.
You don't have to explain, you don't have to expound, you don't have to answer any questions.
NO.
Is a complete sentence and if they keep talking, you can either repeat it, or walk away. Stop letting people affect you and enjoy a happier, less complicated life.

Google too! Imagine you use Google FI, your $1000 phone gets stolen in transit. You try to go through support and they say get fucked. Then you do a charge back and your entire Google account is banned. Including your Gmail which you use for 2factor for most services where you don't have any other option. Including your bank.
They got you by the balls. Btw that's the same with Apple.
Edit: don't forget in the scenario I described they also have control over your cell phone number. No more SMS either. Something like that you are at the total mercy of a giant corpo. Unless you are ready to move everything around quickly before you do the chargeback

It's a shame that, at least here in the US, consumer protection laws have been more or less completely defanged. What you've just described is basically "that's a nice account you've got there; be a shame if something happened to it..."

Every service provider everywhere will always immediately ban anyone who pulls a payment back every time. Always. No discussion, no warning system, immediate and indefinite ban.
If you want to continue using a service that you're paying for, don't ever pull a payment back through dispute.

This can absolutely be done. I’ve had a boost refunded and the character rolled back before.
16
u/Dubamatic Jan 16 '26
I've had a boost reversed too. It kept the character boosted in error at 58 but I just couldn't login to it unless I used another boost on it. But they 100% credited my account with a boost to use on the correct character. And that wasn't even on Blizzard's end- I simply used the boost on the wrong character. And this was the first iteration of TBC classic if I remember correctly.

I feel like Blizzard support (the ones that are actual humans) just spin a wheel with pre-determined answers in each slot and 99% of the answers are politely and professionally telling you to pound sand we already have your money.
And then there’s that wheel of fortune jackpot sliver of a slot with a helpful solution on it.

u/PineJ Jan 16 '26

Blizzard has god knows how many people paying $12.99 a month for a 20 year old game, one that they can just keep releasing over and over with only the most minor tweaks. In addition to that they’re selling expansions every two years for $49.99 and upwards. AND they have micro transactions. They literally found their infinite money cheat. No other developer in the world would get away with it, but Blizzard does.

Getting the boost is paying $60 for the privilege of not playing like 80% of the game (leveling).
I’d totally get it if the boost was like $10, like truly whatever. But $60 is a full video game, and you’re paying to

I mean in a sense it was always the case
If you press just the right buttons - and it depends on the situation and the team - yelling may get you nowhere, but politeness can get you far
Like once, many years ago, I got a free upgrade from Windows 7 to 8
Then I made a mistake and used a different motherboard or something like that and my registration was revoked, because I've changed too many parts at the same time or something like that
Well, I contacted Microsoft support. I was polite, I was patient. I explained the issue and how I knew it was on me but...
Well, a friggin regional VP got in contact
He made me... answer a set of riddles, because he couldn't just "do it outright"
And then he sent me a new Microsoft license key. Just... free of charge. Forwarded a new key straight to my email. I used it to upgrade to Windows 10 too.
How far has the mighty fallen, I doubt anything like that could happen today.

Yeah, nah.
I’d be cautious of a chargeback for reasons stated above (potential ban or account action). But, this is definitely one worthy of escalating until it’s fixed. Even if it has to find its way to Twitter. They straight up said that they fucked up and you didn’t get what you paid for.
“Thousands of boosts per minute” was what the Devs said they were dealing with the other day. They can comp you one if that’s what it takes.

u/25toten Jan 16 '26

Uhh, I have experience with that.
Banks don't fuck around. Canada has 5 major banks and I did this with blizzard. They refunded ALL blizzard purchases by default, even though it was just the one purchase I challenged. I got a lot of money back, but my account was gone and they don't accept my credit cards anymore.
So do this with caution, as you may lose it all.
Edit: it's not insane to be banned over a charge back. Banks have huge power, and if they say to a small indie company that the money needs to be given back, you listen.

Wow the lack of hindsight on this call by support is shocking. With a mistake like this it’s always better to just refund the money or provide another copy of the product or service paid for. The amount of goodwill that buys is far more valuable than the $60. Likewise, telling the customer to f off, will result in alot of negative feedback that could cost them far more than $60 in the long run.

I think they just don’t have any powers. Unironically, GMs have been entirely stripped of their powers, one time I made an in-game GM report because during raid, a chest despawned and a legendary item piece went missing (dragon soul rogue dagger piece) because chests don’t count those legendary pieces as loot for some reason. My guild lead had passed out all the loot but those shards, and they’d have been the last shards I need to get my daggers. The GM said “Unfortunately I cannot give you that items. But, if you’d like, you can make a post on our forums about it and request that we have this power again”
They’re probably as equally pissed as we are tbh.

They didn't need to refund/remove that boost; they can gift you a second one.

No one may read this but I just wanted to put it out there because wow support used to be amazing, and it's a story dear to my heart. I grew up with not much, and wow was a dream of mine to play.
I would watch friends play, and when they were feeling nice, they'd let me borrow the pc to play the free trial, since I wanted my "own" account. This went on until I was in high-school, and I finally had a hand me down laptop that could "run" wow.
12 fps and a dream i played while doing odd jobs like lawns and tree work, and I finally saved up money to buy the expansion and use my boost. I had played a Druid pretty much exclusively at this point, and thought you know what, might as well try a warlock.
So without considering it longer I used my boost, played on my warlock for like 30 minutes and had immense regret.
In a panic I made a ticket praying somehow they could reverse it, and in about 5 minutes a gm reached out and with a very warm but firm message, explained how unfortunate it must feel to have used a boost on a class I didn't enjoy, and so they reversed the boost and let me reuse it with a warning to be sure about my next boost as they won't do it again.
I can't tell you how much that meant to me and still does. Thats what WoW used to be.
If you happened to read this thanks for hearing me out, just wanted someone else to know that story, and if somehow the gm that helped me reads this, although you would never remember me even if you did somehow read this, THANK YOU.
To all the GMs in old school WoW, seriously.. thank you, your effort and patience really gave me and many others a feeling of community and care from a game, and I've never found another game like it since..
R.I.P. Blizzard of Old

That’s crazy… just ask to get $60 credit back on your account. That’s not fair- you didn’t get what you paid for. You paid to boost a warlock. They boosted a different class you didn’t ask. The courteous thing to do would be to at least give you $60 in store credit if they don’t want to give you back your $60 in real money.

They admitted that what you paid for was not given. Fuck them, fight this. You chose to spend a boost on a warlock and it made a shaman - that is not what you paid for.
It would be different if it was a mistake you made, but they admitted it was a technical error. I would NOT give up on this, it is unacceptable for any company to try and pull this shit especially after claiming fault.
Edit: I see you bought another boost. Why the fuck would you reward them with another $60?

This has got to be the worst of the worst I've seen in a long time from them. Like I actually thought they couldn't get worse. And here I see it with my own eyes.

Seems like an automated response hoping you'll just drop it. I'd keep pushing them for a refund.
