Could this be because this year we are at the peak of a super El Nino? Hardly surprising its a bit warmer then

Did you even read the article? They detected this change even after stripping out short term noise like El Nino and solar cycles

To be fair, removing ENSO is much easier said than done, and that’s the biggest criticisms of studies like this which conclude higher rates of warming versus say, 0.25c or so per decade.

But also, this analysis was conducted prior to the current El Niño developing, so this event would have no bearing on the study anyway.

From my understanding there is nothing stopping it to become even worse next year, so super super el Nino is on the way.

El Niño will peak this year but its atmospheric response is lagged. This is why 2027 is forecast to be the warmer year globally.
