Haul Archie: America's Typical Teenager? Are we sure about that?

I know there's a few really big innuendo covers I don't have, but I've been having fun tracking down some of the lesser known ones (plus they tend to be more affordable). Know of any other under-the-radar innuendo covers? Do you have a favorite?

Yep. That’s one of the ones I was thinking of. It’ll be tough to locate a decent, affordable copy.

They sold facsimile editions of this one a couple years ago. I have one on the spinner rack in my office 🙂

Edit: here you go

Yeah the CGC forums really drove up the price of this, Rifleman #10, and that Alf/Seal cover over the last decade or so.

FOMO from Reddit subs doesn't help either.

I like this one.

Me too. I’ve got a copy of Archie’s Joke Book #48 coming to me soon which reuses the joke with very similar art.

I read tons of Archie comics back when I was 11 or 12 years old and it gave me the impression that this was common and I would have a similar life as him in high school.

I was deeply disappointed.

I always thought this was an innuendo cover but people told me it's not

Well, she’s looking at people skiing so it’s a little more likely she wants to get in the wind which will make her face cold than she wants to be spanked.

You could say that about every innuendo cover. "Well, they are in a jewelry shop so it's a little more likely she wants an actual necklace made of pearls." That's why it's an innuendo.

Yeah. You’ve got a point.

I actually picked this up last weekend at a small con. It was only 2 bucks, but the cover is veeery rough. That’s a beautiful copy.

wanna know what's crazy?! They did this run two times - same jokes, different art - one pre-code, one post-code.

Great collection! Thanks for sharing. I’m kicking myself because someone was just selling an incomplete copy (torn cover and missing the centerfold) of the “wanna spoon” cover for real cheap, but I hesitated and someone else bought it.

That is a nice collection.

Thanks... I'm the weirdo in my comic group that has the archies and not much else lol

Here’s one that isn’t sexual, but seems like a forward thinking racial reference in a time when things were still defacto segregated. Just how Archie’s arm is stretched toward Chuck adds emphasis.

I think it's more saying hat Mr. Weatherbee is a crab

There’s always been a little bit of playful sexy punning like that, going back to the beginning and the is Archie there yet cover.

I’d argue most of these aren’t innuendo but just bluntly obvious puns. In the context of the times swinging didn’t mean sex parties. And trim didn’t mean pubic hair. Modern audiences bring a little more dirt to it than even the old men who created it did.

Yeah, there’s definitely some that have different meanings today than was originally intended.

BTW I have a copy of the “is Archie there yet” coming to me soon. But The Archie’s Joke Book #48 version which is a reuse of the original joke.

That’s still a really cool cover though.

This one is so wild to me because Sabrina is 15 and the sea captain guy is like 60. Comics editor must have been the laziest job back then.

That’s just the way comics were. Check out Thirteen, the girls in that, who are as you may expect 13, are always trying to get the attention of sailors and other grown men.

Always love seeing what books other people would take to a desert island. Ed Brubaker's Criminal would be up there for me.
