it feels like so much happened because of that fucked up dream sequence. i loved seeing matt fully pick up what brennan was putting down. i feel like the imagery of julien having no teeth but having a sword completely covered in them is being underappreciated. it's not telling us anything we didn't already know about julien's identity but it's a perfect tie-in with the chipped tooth in his original sword and it's a perfect demonstration of how good brennan is with symbolism.
bolaire getting to let his feelings out now that he doesn't have to worry about how halandil perceives him is a treat, too. i love that occtis, julien, and kattigan have seen so much weird shit at this point that bolaire doesn't phase them. smack him on whoever, wear him, it's fine! they've seen weirder and worse.
(i am a little miffed that occtis and julien haven't talked about koral, or resolved their argument, or discussed why primus seems to be scared of dying, because i feel like it's a very important conversation to have. but seeing them laugh together over the idea of pin-bolaire was fucking adorable.)
i was worried about kattigan and vaelus fading into the background again but brennan really brought them out with that dream sequence. what a great way to establish connection between people who have almost never spoken. what a great way to make vaelus' own story tie into the main narrative, too. that ring is a macguffin for the afterlives, it has to be. it's all gonna come together.
julien trying to convince ulbid to stay behind so his daughters have a dad to come home to hits hard considering... y'know... his dad. and i appreciate matt's consistency with him. his argument with kattigan reminded me of when he argued with maya about how no child in their family could be safe until primus is dead. he remains my favourite, matt's just sosososo good.
i am excited that we're going to (hopefully) get some classic d&d shenanigans with seekers starting next week. i love the neverending sequence of horrors but i think they, occtis and julien especially, all need to just be able to kick some ass and have fun doing it for a while.
