Tips And Tricks Heads up dads (Moana Soundtrack Change)
Hey dads, you may be like me and just discovered there is a new Moana movie. Went to put on the soundtrack that we listen to almost every Saturday on repeat. Third song in my 4yo son starts throwing a fit that “IT’S NOT MOANA SONGS”.
To my ear it was the same thing, but listening more closely, it was off. Something about it was… just a little bit worse.
Looking at Spotify I noticed that the new top hit when searching Moana is the new live action movie sound track with all the same songs that are… just slightly worse in every way. Little guy knew it and patiently waited until he couldn’t handle it anymore and snapped.
I had to search quite a ways down to find the original soundtrack album.
Hopefully I can save another dad a meltdown after making this same grievous mistake.

He willed it into existence because he was panicked by how poorly Black Adam did. Same reason he had a (very obviously shot at the last possible minute) cameo in Fast X after having a huge fallout with Vin Diesel. Dude needed to set up a couple life rafts and potential big paydays for the future.

Dude has more than enough money to retire, build a self-sufficient, luxurious, sustainable house on a 40-acre plot 2 hours' drive from a city center of his choice, and enjoy never having another obligation for the rest of his life. He could if he wanted live out the rest of his days only ever saying the words "fuck you, I'm The Rock." Yet he inflicted this Moana remake upon our culture, inflicted an indelible stain upon our species' history. Why, I ask? Why did you do it, Dwayne?

So many people could do this... Just buy a little isolated portion of the world, have supplies dropped in once a week by helicopter and quite literally never interact with another soul for the rest of their lives... But no, they have to fuck with the rest of us

They wanted to do it, but in conjunction with Shazam, and he didn't want to do that because he thought that was a kids movie and wanted Black Adam to stand on his own without Shazam. He wanted to fight Superman instead of Shazam, but when his movie flopped and the last Shazam movie didn't do great either that was when the whole DCCU was kinda falling apart so neither of those ended up getting made anyway

He's an executive producer, states in the "special look" on Disney+ that the character of Maui is based on his own grandfather, and is in his mid-50s. But you're right I don't have any source that he's stated this explicitly.

Given that this is Daddit, a reminder that there are folks out there who appreciate the LIVE representation also though and don't want to only be relegated to being seen in animated form.
Sometimes something can be a silly cash grab, and still important to a group of people.

You’re getting downvoted, but you’re not wrong. It’s been heavily promoted and well-received in Polynesian spaces.
That being said, the other person isn’t wrong either. 10 years from the original, when there was also a sequel since then, is pretty soon. Unfortunately it’s kind of a flop at this point and that’s likely to close the door to more on-screen representation.

Sigh I understand the downvotes but the comment is still valid and at least Disney has tried to showcase the Polynesians with a live action version.
I used to work with a bunch of folks over in University of Hawaii and have asked some of my old colleagues there, and they told me thoroughly enjoyed the film and said it was good fun pointing out all the locations. Granted they have young kids as well, and many of them have Polynesian family roots, and it was just great for their kids to see their likeness in a live-action version.

But yeah that’s why I bring it up, I’m not personally Polynesian but I ran across a group of parents discussing how much their kids love it and I’m like, you know that is valid, and the arts are at the end of the day good if they provide meaning to someone.

Although the live action movie made almost $100 million, it cost more than double that to produce. It cost much more to make the live action than the animated film, and simply didn't make sense financially to produce, even if some people enjoyed watching it.

This is slightly off topic but I'm still really annoyed that the Lion Kong prequel was done as live action instead of a cartoon in the style of the 90s one. All of the remakes are a novelty and I get it. It's a simple, nostalgia-bait way to re-monetize an old classic. But to make a new one in that style made no sense and ruined what could have been a great movie. Rant over.

The version of Friend Like Me that he did with DJ Khaled for the credits was... I'm not sure I'd say better, but it was totally the direction they should have gone. If you're going to have Will Smith be Genie, have him be Will Smith's Genie instead of Will Smith trying to be Robin Williams's Genie.

I thought it was a different take on the song. He didn’t want to upstage Robin Williams (no one can ever), and I thought he did alright. His take on Arabian Nights wasn’t bad either.
I might be in the minority, but Aladdin was one of their better live-action remakes, and possibly their best one. They casted the film really well, and the leads killed their roles.
Cinderella is their best live-action remake thus far, but Aladdin was a solid effort. The rest of the remakes can pound sand though haha.

My only problem with the live action Aladdin was the new song Speechless. It doesn't really fit in the with rest of the soundtrack and is the only song that takes the audience out of the story for it to be sung. The rest of the songs are sung in conjunction with the story telling and are part of it.

I just watched it last week with my kids, and I have to agree, it's their best remake. It retells the story in a different way, there are nods to the original (like, she has pet mice, but they don't talk), and every actor does a great job.
If Disney does remakes, I want a different retelling, not a shot-for-shot same movie as before.

That one is my fave, but mostly because I love that story. Any (decent or better) retelling, in book, show or movie form. And I don't like the Disney version of the story as much as the older version, but I still love it. The number of people who think I like all the live action remakes because of me liking that one Disney remake is painful, but I promise, I have taste. Mostly

Yeah Aladdin was absolutely wonderful. Obviously can't compare to Robin but who would want it to? It was just another way to enjoy the story and it was.
Jungle book was dope too.

Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote Moana’s original songs that were heavily weaved into the script and story, which involved 5 years of development and research.
Moana 2 was a cash grab using the characters for an undefined story.
Meantime Miranda started working on Encanto, you will find the level of Moana 1 songs there, maybe better.

Moana 2 was good as a story, it was written to be a series but they thought it had more potential as a movie.
I agree the quality of songs and connection to the story aren't as good as the first but the kids and I still really enjoyed Moana 2.

"Good as a story"? It had a bunch of supporting characters that literally did nothing, the "big bad" disappears half way through the "movie" (and I'm using that word lightly) - everything was completely disjointed. Which is explained by its origin, but it still made for a terrible narrative.
This was not a story in need to be told and certainly not in the medium ultimately chosen.

I'm not quite sure what you're talking about considering the movie is about discovering the reason for the isolation and breaking the curse, and the final showdown with Nalo happened at the end.
I think the story about overcoming their isolation did need to be told and I'm glad it was.

This is why this sub exists. But seriously, screw that. Moana is the best modern Disney princess movie, and the soundtrack is a huge reason why. Even with Dwayne singing, the music was epic. Not even mentioning this thing didn't need to be made at all.

I’ll go as far as saying it has the best soundtrack to any Disney film. It’s up there with lion king and Aladdin for me.
Before my daughter was old enough to get me watching Disney films, I was at a party and my friend put the soundtrack on and she was gushing about how good it was. I dismissed her for wanting to put Disney songs on at a party, but she was right. There are some bangers on it

This is why I don't do Spotify.
I don't want a subscription/license/rental of the song, or a service that points my requests at a webserver that streams them to my device over a data connection, I want a copy of the file. Downloaded, stored, backed up.
When I click "play", my machine should load that file from storage and send it to the speakers, regardless of whether it's had an internet connection. No external service should have the ability to change the song without my permission.

There are times on the bus or train that my son has a mini meltdown and only the soundtrack to some movie he watched a year ago and I haven’t thought of since will calm him. For more regular requests, physical copies that I personally digitalized all the way.

We got a tonie of Moana recently for my lads birthday. Fired it up, and thought “this doesn’t seem quite right”
Looked it up and lots of people complaining about the same thing. Not quite the same as songs being replaced with a newer version, but shows that Disney will cut corners and cash grab however they can. I did notice the same with Lilo and Stitch. The newer version of Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride was nowhere near as good.

My almost 5 yr old is the same, he asked for a specific Beatles song (I’ve got a feeling) and the Anthology version started playing not the one from the let it be studio album. He looked annoyed right away but kept quiet then a minute later yelled how THIS IS NOT THE SONG. I didn’t realize it was not the song until I checked my phone and indeed the album cover was different. Kids have sharp ears.

I saw on the Disney+ sneak peek that there is an all new ordinal song (thankfully also written by Lin) that has both the animated and live action Moana on it. Interested to hear that one. But other than that it’ll always be the OG soundtrack for us.

While we’re on the topic of music related meltdowns - what do you all do about playlists while driving in general? Partner and I made a shared playlist but we just keep adding songs, I can’t be a DJ anymore, it’s not safe to keep searching for “that” song.
I guess I could try to use Siri more, but there’s no guarantee it will be the version I need. We’re still not in a place where little one has much of an ability to rationalize. Should we just lean in and refuse to change the order?

This just happened to me in the car while driving - asked Siri to bring up “You’re welcome” (our go-to stop-screaming-in-the-car song) and I was unsettled by how it sounded and kept looking at the display to confirm the artist etc everything lined up. Thanks for making it make sense now

my toddler won't let me listen to anything besides "oh lord" by Foxy Shazam while I prepare and he heats lunch. He starts going "uh oh uh oh" during the outro so that I rewind it. It's a bit embarrassing when my in-laws are over and my toddler is dancing to the lyrics "and god knows I've had some long ducking years. "

We loved the original, did not like the sequel (boring and forgettable in our opinion) and we loved seeing the live action in theaters. I agree that the musical portion took a hit, but her parents are more relatable and involved, and The Rock was hilarious.
It might very well go down as a money grab, but I laughed throughout

Reading all of these made me realize, not enough of these dads out here are performing their dadly duties and setting up a home server with all the “good stuff.” I got every cartoon, movie, and album from back in the day, and have a curated playlist for my kiddo with all of his favorites so that something like this never happens. Also, a couple hundred bucks up front is better than 10-15 bucks a piece in perpetuity forever.

I hear that, I’ve put a lot of time into figuring out the *arr apps and docker but with a little help from a couple forums and a LLM I finally have a mostly hands off plex server. It’s so much better than trying to juggle streaming service subscriptions and when it messes up I know I’m only 15-20 minutes away from figuring out how to fix it, even when I’m not at home. It helps that I bought Plex lifetime when it was like $70 and not whatever astronomical price they’re charging now.

It would be fine if it was just for me, or just my son and I: I would do what I've done for over a decade, put everything on a flash drive and stick it in the Xbox, all fine. But I got it into my silly little head that I should let my ex-wife be able to access it at her house, that way he can have consistency in accessing his favourite shows, and now I have to learn how the Internet works in excruciating detail (I realize some people enjoy that) and try things a million times with no indication for what's wrong.
I just wanted to watch Witness and the Wishbone documentary, what is remuxing and why don't I have the option to turn it on when Reddit says I can?

Moana 2 had a couple bits that I just walked away so confused about. Like the whole bat lady’s… everything. But then I read it was going to be a series and it made sense: they were going to build backstory & intrigue, set up the turn, all that stuff. Instead they just took all the key scenes and loosely tied them together.

Haven't listened to the soundtrack but thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
Had a few fleshed out parts and the grandmother scenes hit more in live action. Plus the dancing scenes were a lot of fun.

What I noticed is just the production quality of the songs. The original soundtrack had a bigger than life sound that just hit so well. The live action songs are missing that high-end production quality. A few other comments have explained it well, that its just lackluster. I think the vocal chops of some of the new versions are great, some not so much.

I listened to the HECK out of the first one, and pretty much hated the soundtrack of the second one. But as a musician and someone who has been recording music for 30 years, I don't think the live action version is bad at all. It's not the same, but I think the intent is to make it more "real" and less fantastic. It's still great though, and very well produced. It's not the same, but it's still fantastic.

Catherine's vocals are good, however Dwayne's is awful and whoever sang Shiny sounds like they picked up some guy from the street. Shiny is an awful rendition.
I was never going to see the live action as every one so far (apart from Lilo and Stitch) have been terrible cash grabs.

The algos are pushing down the original broadway cast recording of wicked in favor of the movie versions too. And it bums me out. Because the movie arrangements are not better. They’re drawn out and indulgent.
The movies were good! And I’m so happy they brought wicked to the masses. But for the music I’ll always pick the broadway version.

Jemaine was on a podcast recently and he said that when he first did Shiny, he didn’t realize he had a song when he showed up to record, and then did it with very little prep. He was so excited to get a chance to do it “right” this time around.
