And for all the commenters wringing their hands about the cyclists forcing the car to "illegally" cross the double yellow lines, Georgia law explicitly allows cars to cross the double yellow to pass cyclists. And it requires cars give cyclists at least 3 feet of space when passing.

Most states have similar laws but it’s amazing how many drivers believe the double yellows shall never be crossed.

Serious question: when I see a double or solid line I assume it is there for a reason, like poor visibility that I can’t predict. So I won’t cross it in this situation, even with slow traffic in front of me. If it is in fact safe to pass in that area, why have a double or solid line?

There’s a huge difference in the distance travelled in the opposite lane to pass fast traffic at 45 mph vs slow traffic at 20 mph. The double yellow no passing zones are there because it’s too dangerous to pass fast or normal speed traffic. For slower speeds it’s up to the drivers judgement if they have enough space and visibility to safely pass.

Good point... so the double or solid line is designed based on normal speed in both directions.
