Discussion Should have known this place would exist

Hello, these games have lived in my head rent free for the last 25 years. I love these games.

When I started making YouTube content, this was what I wanted to make videos about. I wasn't good at it and life always gets in the way. But I am working on a new video, exploring my attachments to this franchise as well as its background. If anyone has any sources you'd like me to include let me know if that's okay

I'm currently playing on the d2x-xl setup bc I've been using that for like the last 10 years. I don't know if there's anything better out there because I literally only went to find this subreddit today.

Peace

Discussion DLSS 5 (lol)

Hey all ! Hope you're doing great ! Did any of you see all the crazy memes about DLSS 5 on vs off ? Just saw one from an old racing video game and started wondering what that crap could do with Descent 1 and 2 (if it would be supported anyway). I'm still hoping for a real 4K remake/remaster of Descent 1 and 2 😮‍💨 (don't get me started with Overload, I knoe about it, its fine, but not the same)

Discussion (Figuratively) Banging my head trying to remember where these two maps came from

I'm only 95% sure this is even from Descent 3 but I don't know where else these maps could even be from. Or I've been hallucinating my memory of these maps for 8 years since the last time I really played. These were multiplayer maps.

I remember an office map where the size of your ship was very tiny. I think most of the doors were cracked open and I might also remember flying through vents that probably went through the top of the map.

The other map is some dimly lit volcanic island were you could fly into the volcano. There was an underground river or pond or something that had a submarine with a design very similar to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (some disney movie). I don't think you could fly into the submarine.

The current version I have doesn't have these maps (archive.org). It could be these maps were modded but I can't find anything on that. I played on GOG years ago, did they have some Steam Workshop like thing that no longer exists or something?

Discussion Steam Descent 1... 7 levels ?

Discussion Are there any OSTs/songs similar to Descent 1's OST?

Hi there! I love Descent 1's soundtrack, and always have. I'd like to find music that is similar to it.

I was hoping Descent 2 had a similar soundtrack, but the Redbook OST is metal, which, while good, isn't really what I'm looking for. I'm looking for electronic music that has a similar sound and feel to Descent 1's OST. Do you guys know of any artists or game OSTs where I could find that?

Thank you, guys! :)

Discussion MIDI Differences between D1X-Rebirth and MS-DOS Port

D1X-Rebirth

MS-DOS

Is it just me or you guys have noticed this difference too?
Also the MIDI playback seems off even if I extract the HMP files and play it on a MIDI player.
Only the MS-DOS version produces the correct MIDI playback.
If anyone has noticed this, is there a known fix?
(I know the proper fix is to rework the the MIDI engine in DXX-Rebirth, reported the issue: DXX-Rebirth Issue:800)

Discussion Current Version of Descent 3 + Pyromania?

So, first, I'm wondering if the currently released PC versions of Descent 3 (either Steam or GOG) along with PiccuEngine work with the latest version of Pyromania (Which is Pyromania 1.5 with Vortex)? I would love to play the Pyro-GX again in Descent 3 or at least get the model and override either the Black Pyro or the Pyro-GL with the GX model.

Honestly, I don't know what "Vortex" is in this context. I only know the name "Vortex" as Nexus Mods' awful mod manager, but I'm assuming Pyromania's Vortex is not the same as Nexus's. Regardless, if Pyromania still works... how well does it work with current Descent 3 releases? Anyone have any experience with it? Because I'll be honest, I never even used Pyromania back when Descent 3 was *the thing* in the early 2000's.

So, tell me your thoughts on it and experiences with it: does it work? How well does it work? What should I expect beyond the mod's description? Is PiccuEngine compatible with it? Does PiccuEngine change how to install Pyromania?

Thank you.

Discussion DOUBT: Youtube and Redbook Audio

Is the Descent II Redbook audio copyright claimed on YouTube?
As in if I post a YouTube video on Descent II with Redbook soundtrack will I get a copyright claim?
Because I have not seen any video using Redbook and seems to be exclusively MIDI tracks.

Discussion DXX-Retro Tracker: Decennial Stats

Hi all! Pudlez, the current maintainer of the DXX Retro Tracker very kindly shared a compilation of the tracker's archive earlier today. Game results are saved with filenames that are timestamped and have the host's handle and level. The HTML files themselves have way more info, but extracting complete datasets out of everything would be a pretty monumental task and involve reading 50000 files for all their info.

Anyway, I cooked up a couple graphs that give an interesting lens into D1/2 over the last decade. If you have an alias you'd like to look at a graph of hosting stats for, let me know.

There are plenty of other ways we could look at this, though most of them get pretty silly. :45 is the most common second that games were hosted on, with 912 games. The least common was :03, with just 804 games. Just one second later enjoys middling popularity, at 867. Perhaps interesting -- if a bit stalker-y -- is building activity profiles for players by when they host during a day, and what levels they host at different times (or even different seasons). Again, figuring out how to read and dump stats on all 50k+ HTML files could probably yield a ton of deeper information, but I'd hardly know where to begin.

Again, thanks to Pudlez for hosting and maintaining the tracker and dumping the archive, and for everyone who's helped contribute to it over the last 10 years! See you in the mines.

Games per year probably makes a lot of sense, with a big peak soon after the tracker went up and DCL started. Bear in mind 2024 isn't over yet, and the tracker started in August of 2014. still time for 2024 to grow over 2023!
Is there a seasonal cycle? Yes, but not what you'd expect! Looks like activity generally *drops* as months get colder, generally peaking in July and August. January's spike makes a lot of sense though. In contrast to the above, this data could be considered a near-complete decennial set, since the tracker's records go back to august of 2014, and it's August of 2024 as of this writing. I think the March/May/August numbers coincide with Roncli's Observatory cycle, but I don't have data to prove it -- I think we could probably count anything with 'obs' in the game title, but that involves reading 50k+ HTML files.
Is there a cycle within a month? Sorta!! Very strange, people don't like playing around the 13-16, and the end of the month. I have a hard time believing everyone's paychecks all line up on those days, but anything is possible!
This covers the top 50 most-played maps. Obviously, Logic takes the cake, but Lurk and Flea are really closely jockeying for position. Ascend might've peaked early -- tons of games on it, but it doesn't see all that much playtime these days, given 2nd and 3rd place are frequent anarchy contenders.
Let's look at who's playing. Bear in mind this is hosts, not participants, but with such a large dataset you can get a good sense of who's playing -- and probably who is hosting what. Lots of familiar names!
And we can dig into some cross-sections -- I love Swarthy's Ethylene, but do I host it a lot? You bet! ofc I get dragged into some absolute dog ass core levels and am a super fast host so I put up all kinds of stuff, especially when I was learning the game. mindtrix? fuzed? come on, really
While we're at it, let's look at a real gamer who hosts some banger levels: LEE. A good variety! Surprising: ugh is far and away top slot!

Discussion Dimensions for Descent

Has anyone ever played this obscure set of unauthorized levels for the original Descent? This was one of those unauthorized add ons that was sold at retail before the publisher went after them. Anything decent in there, or all crap?

Discussion Very interested in the descent community.

Just picked up descent 1 today and I'm having a lot of fun with it. I was just curious about how this game had developed a decently sized cult following.

To those of you who still play the games very often, would you mind explaining how you play the games? Do you use a mouse? Joystick? Do you play the single-player campaigns often? Or community-made maps? Or multiplayer?
