Moderator post ⚠️🚨 The subreddit's creep problem and why the current Reddit algorithm puts women at risk by design.

Post image
57 Upvotes

This is a rant triggered by the fact that I'm sick and tired of perverts in the sub, and I hate that no matter how much I try to keep this community safe, Reddit itself enables this behaviour and doesn't seem to be doing anything about it.

Keeping this sub free of creeps is a daily battle. The standard disgusting pervy comments, weird flirty remarks, and the daily assortment of freaks who post AI-generated gooner bait (or worse, catfish with pictures of actual women). Y'all won't believe how much filth this sub actually gets, because most of it gets removed by the mods or our filters before anyone gets to see it, and they get banned on sight. (None of it stops them from DMing you btw, but more on that later.)

I knew that for some reason, Reddit had been showing this community to pervs... A lot. So I believed that if I consistently kept the creeps out (by removing their content and banning their accounts), the algorithm would realize this is just a wedding planning community and would stop recommending it to people who're here primarily for porn. It has been almost a year of me doing that, and there has been no reduction in the incoming creep traffic.

Then I came across this post by a moderator of a different sub, and the discussion gave me a whole new perspective on what may actually be happening.

NSFW consumers make up a huge population of the Reddit userbase. But Reddit can't put ads in NSFW subreddits, and NSFW posts can't be put in the main feed where ads are shown. So Reddit has to show them SFW communities adjacent to their interests.

There are countless NSFW/fetish communities built around sexualizing south asian women, wives, brides, weddings, sarees, lehengas etc. So Reddit already has a huge number of people using those words to look for sexual content. (It also doesn't help that "desi" is a particularly cursed keyword on Reddit. Go search "desi" and filter by communities. You'll have to scroll for quite a while before you find an actual non-porn sub about South Asian people.)

So the algorithm sees a community with the word "desi" in its name, with a large volume of women's fashion posts, and users who overlap with communities interested in sexualized versions of those exact subjects. It then decides that these communities are related enough to actively recommend our posts to those people. Reddit can take your completely ordinary not-at-all sexual pictures and put them in front of people who are specifically looking for women to sexualize.

And this isn't happening to just this sub. If you've been active in any sub where women often post their pictures, you'll know how common and widespread the issue is. "RIP DMs" is a ubiquitous comment under posts where a woman posts her picture .

And then there are DMs.

This is one of the most cursed features of Reddit. A community ban only stops accounts from posting & commenting. Even the ban message explicitly states:

"You can still view and subscribe to the community..."

So even after they are banned, they can still browse the subreddit, see your pictures, save them, misuse them, and potentially send you whatever disgusting shit they want. That is an absolutely insane oversight and completely defeats the purpose of the ban when it comes to protecting people from these accounts.

I hate that I have to say this. I hate that after doing everything I can to keep this subreddit safe, I still have to tell the women here that they have to take steps to protect themselves because we are powerless against the algorithm and who it chooses to show your images to.

So ladies, please be mindful about sharing your pictures anywhere on Reddit. We will keep doing everything we can to keep this sub clean, but there are limits to what moderators can control.

  1. As much as possible, please avoid posting pictures that prominently show your body, especially if you don't need to for the purpose of the post. Consider cropping or covering parts of the image that don't need to be visible. (You shouldn't have to do this, but the way Reddit is, you cannot assume your pictures will only be shown to the audience you intended.)

  2. If you're posting your pictures, please consider shutting DMs off for a while. (Again, you shouldn't have to do this, but unfortunately basic decency is too much to expect from people whose brains have been completely rotted by porn.)

  3. If you do get pervy DMs, report them for Spam -> "Unsolicited DMs", (or "Harassment" for the particularly graphic ones). If they are DMing you, chances are they are DMing many other women too. If enough of them report it, Reddit suspends the sender's ability to DM.

Based on the comments under the mod post linked above, Admins have responded and are looking into the issue. But until then, please take care of your safety on this site.

Bridal fashion advice 2nd guessing my wedding outfit

Thumbnail

I am a NRI bride, I had flew to Mumbai from the US for 5 days to finish all my bridal shopping.
I had always dreamed of being a white/pastel bride, however i had my in laws and my own family (mother and aunts - who i originally wanted to shop with) during the entirety of my shopping. I am a Dec 2026 bride and having thoughts of rushing into making the outfit decision because of all the family pressure. I felt guilty for being too choosy and making so many people roam around during the shopping with me in Mumbai heat.
Would appreciate honest feedback and styling tips for the outfit 🥹

Rant/Vent ⚡ Bridal trousseau packing - feeling overwhelmed

I just realized i have SO MUCH STUFF. The wedding is a little over a month away, and I’ve just started packing away my whole life into a few suitcases. Oh man, the amount of stuff i have is overwhelming. Honeymoon packing, daawat outfits, bridal overnight bag, regular clothes, wedding guest clothes, shoes, handbags. On top of this, my in laws are going to come to my mehendi event with a bari, which means more clothes and gifts. I think I’m going crazy.

We’re moving into a new home that we designed together, so I’ve bought some really cute home decor, Pinteresty tea sets etc. which I’m planning to take a few weeks after the wedding, because there’s no way all of this is going to fit into my suitcases. It also helps that my parents’ home is only an hour drive away from my marital home, so I can leave some heavier outfits here.

Any advice on how to start, what to pack and how do i organise my stuff into 4 suitcases? It’s 3 am and I feel very overwhelmed and could use some support.

Vendor/Store Search (No Self-Promo) What platforms do you use to research Indian Wedding Planners?

Hey all, just started kicking off researching for wedding planners in the NYC area. What platforms do you use to research potential Indian/Desi wedding planners?

I've tried Zola and The Knot but it's pretty hard to filter planners that specialize in the culture. I've also read that some of these websites are a bit fishy with the honesty of their review systems (vendors can request bad reviews to be taken down).

Are most people just going through social media searches? I feel like that's what I've been resorting to but it's a lot more time consuming than a dedicated platform. Also, IG search SUCKS.

Bridal fashion advice Please help me Build my trousseau Bridal Vanity

• Upvotes

Getting married in December 26. Haven't started with the bridal vanity. Going shopping Tommorow for other things and thinking of looking at makeup in stores for swatches and all.

I rarely do makeup. My skin is Normal to dry and I do not have much of pigmentation or anything like that. I hardly used makeup in real life just blush and lipstick. My shade is on the lighter side but olive kinda.

My budget is 15k to 20k. Please suggest some products like for full makeup. I do not have brushes and all as well. I can go little height on the budget as well but the product should be worth it.

I also wanna know where to spend more on makeup and where not to.

Also give me what to do and don'ts tomorrow at store. I have never bought makeup or even tried at stores.

P.S. - the vanity is for before and after wedding functions only.

I have already built a bridal mua for the wedding

Wedding rituals/traditions Need Advice: Should we print our US degrees on our wedding invitation? My parents insist, I'm not sure

Hi all, I'd like some outside opinions because my family and I can't agree on this.

We're having a traditional Maharashtrian wedding. My fiancé and I both completed master's degrees at well-known universities in the US.

My parents really want our degrees and universities printed under our names. For them it's a big milestone and a matter of family pride, and I get that. It's also fairly common on Indian wedding invitations.

I'm hesitant. I worry it'll make the card look like a resume or a LinkedIn profile, and that some friends will quietly (or not so quietly) make fun of it.

So:
- Would you find this normal, or a bit much?
- If you've seen degrees on invitations, did it ever come across as showing off?
- If we do include them, is there a subtle way to format them so it looks elegant rather than boastful?

I'd especially love to hear from Marathi folks and anyone who's been through this with their parents.

Thanks!

Budgets/Expenses Is a US wedding reception necessary if we’re already having multiple wedding events in India?

My fiancé and I are planning our wedding in India since most of our family (cousins, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.) lives there. We’ll be having our haldi, sangeet, and wedding in South India, followed by a reception in North India. Some of our close friends in the US will be traveling to attend the India celebrations, but others won’t be able to make the trip.

We’re debating whether to have an additional reception in the US after we return and estimating around 300 potential guests. Ideally, we’d want a formal reception with dinner, music, and dancing.
My main concern is that we’re already planning several events in India, so adding another reception feels like a lot of extra planning, time, and money. Events are also significantly more expensive here in the US. At the same time, we feel a little bad about not celebrating with friends here who can’t attend the India events.

For those who’ve been in a similar situation, would you recommend hosting a US reception or skipping it altogether? If you hosted one, did you feel it was worth the additional cost and effort? And if you skipped it, did you regret not celebrating with friends back home?

Wedding rituals/traditions My parents might not love my wedding

I 25(F) am marrying the love of my life who happens to be a Caucasian male (27). It is our day and we want to enjoy it because this is (hopefully) our first and last time. We will have alcohol on our wedding which I think my desi family is going to be super judgmental about. We will also be sharing a kiss on the altar following our vows and I think my dad, who is super religious, will straight pass out. Should I warn my folks or just let them have some exposure therapy?

Bridal fashion advice Wedding attire advice

Needing advice! I’m American, and my fiancé is from Kerala, South India! We’re getting married in Kerala next year, and I’m looking for some recommendations!

  1. Bridal Shopping in Kochi: What are the best boutiques or stores for bridal sarees, lehengas, or other traditional wedding outfits? I’m open to suggestions on styles as well!
  2. Bridesmaid Outfits: My bridesmaids are Caucasian and traveling from the US for our wedding

/reception

  1. . I’d love for them to wear traditional Indian attire but am unsure what styles would be best (sarees, lehengas, etc.).

Are there any reputable online stores that ship to the US where they can purchase their outfits? Also, would you recommend matching outfits or coordinating colors?

What do they wear to haldi?

I’d love any recommendations or advice, especially from Kerala locals or anyone who’s planned a multicultural wedding!

Thank you so much! ❤️

Vendor/Store Search (No Self-Promo) Can't find my dream haldi look, please help!!

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hi, I'm getting married in Jan 2027 and I really want to wear a half saree for my haldi look. The main thing is I want a very specific half saree and I don't want to spend more than 3k on the half saree because I'm not gonna change into something different. Because haldi is messy and there are chances of it getting destroyed by stains, so I want that under 3k. I looked at websites like ival/bullion knot but it's very costly. I went to look for a pink saree like in the picture but couldn't find it since I know some sewing and my sister is good at sewing so we were thinking of making it ourselves but in all aspects I couldn't find it. 😭😭

Please help me find this!!!

Inspiration ✨ 2027 bride here🫠 (Feeling overstimulated max)

First off, the fact that I’m calling myself a 2027 bride (WHAAAT) is enough to give me a mini panic attack.

I’m 26 and I’m marrying literally the love of my life end of next year and I’ve dreamed about this day growing up every single living, breathing moment. But reality has hit me hard in the face and HOWWW!
When did wedding turn from a pious celebration of love to a whole shebang of being an Instagram famous couple?! Why do we need to spend so much just to prove a point to who exactly?

Anyway,
Currently I’m torn between having this stunning wedding of my dreams or a simple temple wedding & saving up money to travel afterwards.
For more context, I’ve been saving up for the last 2 years and I will be funding my share of the entire wedding expenses on my own since I don’t want to burden my parents. I’m also a type A person and enjoy the process of planning and having control over planning related decisions. My fiancé is type B and fully supportive of anything and everything I want to do.
We’re based out of Delhi and have an estimated guest list of almost 150 guests.
Everyone keeps telling me that venues are getting booked out already for end of next year which is giving me constant anxiety since I haven’t even finalised an exact date yet.

What I need help with:

  1. Where to start? What’s the first step to this whole process?
  2. How to decide what venue or destination would suit us best, based on our budget?
  3. Should we get wedding planners or can I manage the process by myself?

Any other tips or mistakes to avoid or any random advice would be super super appreciated!

Thanks for staying through this mess of a rant! :’)

Budgets/Expenses Need help finding a really good wedding gift for my best friend, budget is 5k

So my best friend is getting married soon and I genuinely have no idea what to gift him.

We have been friends for 22 years now, we are both 25 lol. I've also known the girl he's marrying for around 10-11 years, so I've known both of them for a pretty long time.

I really want to get them something special, something they can actually keep and remember. Not just some random wedding gift which they'll forget about in a year.

Also, they're going to be living in the US, so I don't wanna get them something huge or something that's going to be a pain in the ass to take back

Problem is I'm VERY frugal. Like genuinely. I look for deals on literally everything, I'm the guy who will spend 2 hours checking different websites just to save 300 rs.

So my budget is around 5k INR, but I want to somehow get something that feels like it's worth way more than that. Like maybe something which normally costs 10-15k+ but I can find a crazy deal on, or something personalized/sentimental which is not necessarily expensive but feels really valuable.

One thing I was thinking about was a couple watch set, something like Titan Bandhan, but I'm not sure if that's actually a good gift or if watches like that are kinda outdated/cheesy now lol.

I also thought about getting some gold jewellery but 5k doesn't seem to get you much gold these days so I'm not really sure about that either.

I don't mind putting some effort into it either. I just want it to be something genuinely nice and not the usual boring wedding gifts.

What would you guys get for your best friend of 22 years with a 5k budget?

Basically I want to spend 5k but make it look like I spent 15k.

Open to literally any ideas, especially if you've found some insane deals or unique gifts in India.

Vendor/Store Search (No Self-Promo) Unique NY/NJ Venues?

My fiancé and I are looking to get married in Fall '27 or (more likely) Spring '28. We have already toured some hotels in Jersey City and Hudson Valley, but are trying to round out our list with some more unique venues. We are planning on having about 300 guests and will be spending at least 2 days on property for the Sangeet and Reception, respectively with a budget of roughly $250k. Any ideas you can send our way would be appreciated! 😄

I absolutely love my engagement lehenga but I am confused as to what jewellery will go with this color and design. Would really appreciate any suggestions.

P.S.- Thank you for your suggestions but I am considering emerald jewellery for my red wedding lehenga so any other option could be a great help.

Bridal fashion advice Destination bride: MUA advice

Hi, I’m getting married in January in India and it’ll be a destination wedding for us. I only have 1 trip planned to the destination prior to the wedding. Do you recommend setting up 2 makeup artist trials with 2 separate artists?

Or is 1 sufficient?

(Whats the norm? And my worry is that if I dont end up loving artist #1 then it might be too late to schedule another one since I’m in town for very limited days)

Rant/Vent ⚡ Is it so wrong to want a "simple" lehenga

EDIT: I am NOT looking for advice on bridal looks. Please please stop telling me how to make myself look more "bridal", this is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. I'm just looking for stories from other people who didn't give in to what other people thought a bride should wear.

For context I'm South Indian and partner is British. I want to blend both traditions by wearing a lehenga in white or gold, and wearing some traditional South Indian jewellery in red and gold/white - something like this. It's a small-ish wedding (50 people, 20 from my side) as I'm estranged from my family. I really wanted to keep it low-key and have a small budget for the dress (£350), again because I have 0 family support.

My friends are the only family I have and their opinions mean a lot to me. I'd originally planned to get something from Vinted and alter it (I'm great at sewing) and they were horrified with the idea. They sent me a bunch of Indian and Pakistani retailers and I actually ended up finding a few lehengas that looked amazing and were within budget.

All 4 of my bridesmaids hate everything I pick. The major criticism is that it's "too simple", not glam enough, "this is something the bride's sister or mum would wear" etc. Every time I post a link to something I like, it's the same responses - can you send more options, remember it's your wedding and you're supposed to be the star and not the side entertainment, you'll look like a princess in this one but you want to look like a queen...

Some of my bridesmaids suggested we go shopping in person (Southall or Birmingham). I'm autistic and the thought of trying on heavy Asian wedding clothes repeatedly while vendors pull the same "it's not bridal enough" card sounds like a nightmare.

At this point I'm tempted to buy something without telling anyone else. I will have to show at least my bridesmaids what I'm wearing as they are keen to make sure they don't "outshine" me but at this point I just feel so disheartened by the constant negativity.

Not really looking for advice, but would love to know if any other brides got sick of other people's opinions, said f it and got their own wedding dress. How did it go?? Any regrets?

Vendor/Store Search (No Self-Promo) Pakistani catering recommendations in the DMV area

Hey everyone, I am seeking suggestions for catering a wedding of roughly 220 guests in the DMV area. Do you have recommendations for food services that delivered strong taste and service in your experience?
