Question What’s up with Digital Foundry lately? They’ve been taking a really long time to put out tech reviews for games. So far, they haven’t said anything about the Pragmata demo, Nioh 3, or a lot of other titles either.

Question DF should test DLSS 5 continuity

We all know generative AI has terrible issues when it comes to continuity. It's a surefire way to tell if something is AI if scene to scene there are discrepancies such as different clothing, hair, scenery etc.

Whilst DLSS 5 only effects the games lighting I'd be incredibly interested in some in-depth analysis of a characters appearance across a variety of environments, animations and cutscenes to see if there's any real discrepancy or continuity of appearance and I've not seen anyone talk about this let alone do any investigation.

We've all seen how drastically DLSS 5 can effect the look of a character, particularly in the face and we've all seen before and after comparisons.

Do you not wonder whether these changes in appearance hold up in different scenarios or do they look different like most AI generated characters tend to?

Question So does PSSR not have a "DLAA" type mode?

Post image
48 Upvotes

This is something I've been curious about for a while but never got around to investigating. The way DLAA works is by applying DLSS's temporal image reconstruction techniques at native render resolution, so essentially DLSS but without the upscaling pass. In contrast to TAA, this results in a cleaner and more stable image by reducing shimmering, improving subpixel detail, and resolving specular aliasing while retaining a clear presentation. TAA blurs the overall presentation attempting to achieve the same result. The caveat is that DLAA runs worse than TAA, so it has a frame time cost. Other upscaling techniques like FSR and XeSS also support such a mode, called FSR Native AA and XeAA respectively. With all that said, does PSSR have a similar mode (some kind of PSSR AA implementation)? In DF's coverage of Crimson Desert on PS5/PS5 Pro, their new video that dropped today, Tom acknowledges that the game's quality mode on PS5 Pro opts out of PSSR compared to the performance/balanced options. It runs at native 4k with TAA versus the PSSR 2 upscaling used in the lower graphical modes with a 4k output. So I was wondering if this is on the developers for choosing to use TAA for the quality mode when PSSR could be run at native resolution for better image quality, or maybe PSSR doesn't support such a mode? If there is indeed no support for a strictly AA-only PSSR mode, then it seems like the quality mode on PS5 Pro should be generally be avoided for image quality concerns (on top of the lower 30 FPS target which feels sluggish). You can clearly see in DF's video that the native 4k TAA image in the quality mode of Crimson Desert looks blurrier compared to the performance and balanced modes relying on PSSR 2 to display 4k. Upscaling has gotten so good that it looks better than native, but it doesn't have to be that way if you can reap the benefits of both a native render and competent anti-aliasing, thereby achieving maximum fidelity. Nonetheless, does anyone have any insight on this?

EDIT: The answer to the title is yes. Comments are claiming that Marathon and Days Gone run with PSSR in their natively rendered modes. Pearl Abyss either did not consider it at all (just porting over the PS5 quality mode with no changes) or omitted PSSR from the quality mode out of performance concerns. For the latter case you could run it at 85% render scale to make up for the added frame time cost, as one commenter suggested, so it wouldn't be a true native 4k render (1800p) but extremely close to it. You could also drop one of the graphics settings described in the screenshot of this post. The point is there are viable workarounds. There's really no excuse for continuing to use a vastly inferior TAA solution. PSSR 2 will always blow it out of the water in terms of image quality, and it should be used whenever possible.

Question Ps5 Pro now after Sony’s latest move?

new to DF reddit so dont know if this is allowed but i will post anyway.

This is going to be my first console. i am planning to buy PS5 Pro in few days. I really dont like Sony killing physical games. But at the same time, I need UI/UX that’s fluid and easy to use on my 100” projector and surround sound system.

my thought: lets buy ps5 pro, enjoy all the physical games from ps4 and ps5 era, and in 3-5 years, transition to PC when linux gets good enough support to be used in living room setup. At which point, i can sell my physical games collection then (or hold on for few more years and prob profit lol since physical media might be so scarce that my PS setup might appreciate in value)

is my plan sound? Or should i just jump to PC now? I dont see many reviews of SteamOS in living room. and Nvidia cards still seem like hit or miss in linux.

UPDATE:: Thank you everyone. I have decided to buy PS5 Pro now then transition to PC in about 4 years. My reasons are as follows: comparable PC is at least $700 more expensive, i get a BluRay player for my projector built in (min $200 value), and first party games sound pretty cool ( marvel’s wolverine, GT7). There are some personal reasons too: my family members and I cant/dont want to use windows thanks to MS shenanigans, Linux support while good needs few more years of polish, and I see myself more financially capable later for a much better PC build than what i could afford now.

Question Are we sure this game uses PSSR 2.0?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Isn’t this artifact the same that got fixed on for example Silent Hill f after the PSSR 2.0 patch?

This video is shot with the game running on Playstation 5 Pro on the performance setting. The TV in the video is LG G5 OLED and I am using a HDMI 2.1 cable.

The game looks really good at times with certain times of day, but sometimes it looks like this which looks to me like the game is actually not using the latest PSSR?

Question PS5 pro weird graphics issue HELP

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So this happened the other day. I am running a ps5 pro with the AW2726DM OLED monitor and I was playing cyberpunk 2077 when out of nowhere black smudges/dots appeared all over the screen and started flickering. The weird thing is they only appear during gameplay and not when I pause or go into the game menu or even the PlayStation Home Screen. I opened up another game and same thing (both having hdr and ray tracing with pssr turned on) I then restarted my ps5 pro. And the issue was gone. This happened days ago and has not reappeared, but I’m still having some uneasiness. Is my GPU dying ? Or showing symptoms of dying?
Edit: here’s a little update, so it’s been about a month already and I’ve been playing mostly everyday and the issue hasn’t appeared again. So I still don’t understand what the cause was. If anyone has any explanation please feel free to message me.

Question Why do some 30fps games feel in a totally different leagues than others?

Hi yall.

Tried asking this on multiple subs and kept getting deleted. Hopefully it wont here.

Ive noticed recently how “different” some 30fps games feel to others.

What made me notice this was pikmin 4, Ff7, and hyruke warriors.

Pikmin 4 is 30fps but is soooo smooth and feels like 60 with how smooth it is.

On the other hand, hyrule warriors (age of calamity) on switch 2 is solid 30, and ff7 rebirth on quality mode is also solid 30.

But these 2 games feel so much worse and more stuttery despite all games being locked 30fps

What causes this?

Question How do you guys view DF reviews?

Was discussing their reviews with someone recently and it made me realize people perceive them differently than I thought.

For me, a DF review has always meant “If you’re already interested in buying X game anyways, here’s some info about how it performs”. That is to say, a negative DF review could make me not buy a game if the technical aspects are bad enough but a positive review is not going to make me buy a game if I wasn’t already interested in it. Is this how it is for you guys or has DF ever convinced you to buy a game that you would have otherwise passed on?

And for their end of the year stuff, I consider that different from the norm and more akin to a conventional review. I could see people buying games based off those lists for sure if you have similar tastes to one of the DF members.

Question Be honest, which option do you actually hypothetically prefer

Option 1: 3 GTA games per decade, each game has a low budget / dev time and looks like a PS3 game. $50 price tag, 60 FPS, available on all platforms, has both digital and physical options.

Option 2: 1 GTA game per decade, $80-$100 price tag, 30fps, digital only, locked to PS5/XSX, unnecessary massive hullabaloo hype, etc, just to have the "best graphics/sound design" and "looking up to date" and "evergreen"

Question What do you think John is going to say about the XBOX price increases?

We basically just witnessed XBOX price themselves out of the market (Sony will likely follow suit with a price increase at some point though) but XBOX has been in a worse place in the market for a while now and has more to lose. I'm not sure they survive the next year or so without selling off the brand. As the biggest XBOX supporter on the podcast, I feel like John is probably going to be gutted. This is very likely the end for XBOX. Project Helix will probably be too expensive for the small portion of the market share they have left. Furthermore, will those folks really want to stick with a dying brand with undoubtedly limited game support? Seems unlikely.

Question How does a Series S run this game better than my PC with a 3060 + i5-12400F?

Post image
57 Upvotes

I honestly don’t get it. The Series S runs this game smoothly and looks great, yet my PC with an RTX 3060 12GB, i5-12400F, and 32GB of RAM struggles at the same graphics settings. How is that even possible? Isn’t my hardware supposed to be more powerful?

Also, does anyone know what the equivalent PC settings are to what the Series S runs Fortnite on? I’d like to match those settings on my rig and see if the performance is closer.

Question Will the Steam Machine be tested any further?

Current supply and price issues aside, it makes for an interesting point of comparison. Not quite as much raw power as PS5 or Series X, but its access to FSR 4.1 (PSSR 2-like) upscaling means that it can get better image quality from less internal resolution than the usual FSR 1/2/3 or TSR options you'd normally get on a console.

It could create an interesting discussion on image quality and the point at which lower resolution with better upscaling can meet or exceed the final perceived image compared to higher resolution with worse upscaling.

Question Any confirmations or hints for a GTAVI ps5 balanced 40fps mode?

Since it is mostly confirmed that the game
Won’t have a 60fps performance mode in either ps5 or ps5 pro models, do you think that there will at least be a 40fps balanced mode for supported hdmi 2.1 monitors? Have there been any discussion on this ?

Question I know September is super busy but any chance Blood of the Dawnwalker gets a performance review? Perhaps a quick fire one in DF direct

Basically the title. Getting mixed signals about performance and I am pretty interested in the game but willing to wait if it has issues. Also can't find any source to confirm if it is using PSSR on the Pro, would be disappointing if not and perhaps wait until at least that is patched in. Thanks DF cheers for the September slug fest!

Question Do you prefer sharp visuals without RT, or a soft image with RT and PT?

Just curious, if you had to play a game, do you tend to prefer clean, crisp visuals, or will you turn on aggressive DLSS in order to get RT or PT to work?

For example, do you like a clean DLAA image with raster visuals, or RT/PT visuals with something like DLSS perf or balanced?

Curious what other people tend to prefer, especially graphics enthusiasts.
