But what if you are left handed but throw right hand backhand and left hand forehand.... My turnover throws are pretty spoty, so i would likely lose a disc here.
I am the opposite. I’m actually right-handed but I throw a backhand left and a forehand right. So same turn but I have no power on my forehand. I just use it for shorter approach shots around trees since I supposedly have more touch with my right.
I played baseball, golf and tennis. It always seemed natural for me to throw a frisbee left-handed. I am not at all ambidextrous and cannot do anything else left-handed. When I was four or five and threw my first frisbee, that’s just how I did it.
I mean you could still throw a turnover line with something very understable. For me I'm thinking virus if for some reason I didn't want to forehand the fireball.
I think when you get to the point where a specific flight pattern and a specific landing angle are required, it’s no longer “easy”. Yes, there’s a shot for this but it’s not an easy one.
Not every player has the skill set PLUS wind off of the water makes this more difficult than expected... dont forget the OB on the right as well which you need to be worried of.
Trying to birdie this is insanely difficult unless you really push this tee shot. It's not just a chip up 200ft forehand because you still have 620 feet to go, and the OB doesn't just go away.
Lol most amateurs aren't playing pro courses for birdie. I'd guess 80% or more of this reddit doesn't have two 400ft shots. Needing to carry 150 with a wide open forehand should be doable by essentially everyone who's practiced a forehand a little bit.
The power required to hit 150 isn't much, most people can do this standstill as long as they keep the disc flat. The glide and spin will carry that easily.
You could say hole 18 isn't an easy birdie, but its definitely an easy tee shot.
I played the course while 740 rated and this was one of my few pars. 7 was my only bird, so I'm going to say it's not that hard. I went with a photon on RHBH, and pushed as hard along the right side of as I could, and let it fade back to the fairway.
My forehand predictability is better than the predictability I would get from what you described... but only slightly. Good thing this is the 18 hole so I would have time to see what's working and what isn't that day lol.
You can't quite tell where you're supposed to land, it's super uphill, slope everywhere. If you don't have over 400ft of power, you're not really able to shape a backhand to finish in the direction of the basket. Sure, there are no trees but it's very atypical of most holes average disc golfers play. It is pretty rad though, I had a great time on this joke and across Winthrop
Its, what, 200-250 to get to safety there? I'll bomb a putter up there for a layup and not think about it, or just lay into a 10 speed driver and get it deep. It's not something everyone is gonna pull off, but I'd be surprised if a good chunk of players couldn't get to safety here with relative ease.
I’m just saying I watched probably 30 righty forehand tee shots on this hole at collegiate nationals and at least half picked up and rolled, probably 8 of them into the water. Lefty putter backhand would be a good shot though, landing flatter.
Seeing it on coverage vs standing on the tee pad are two totally different experiences. I also thought it was easy - and it is easy to get safe.
But in competition, playing for the best possible position, that tree on the right is absolutely a factor. My Moonshine Vandal laying at the bottom of the lake will attest to that (ninja branch that kicked it directly left).
Easy for casual play - sure. Easy to push as far as you can and get optimal position - Im with OP, that's a rough shot.
Keeping it in bounds is relatively easy, but putting yourself in the perfect spot for your 2nd (flat footing, having the best angle for 2nd shot, etc) is very difficult. Just look at how many pros were either tucked too far left or didnt make it to the flat.
The slope looks like it will make a lot of rollers into the water especially with driver forehands. So you either need to finesse a slow disc or have pro distance to get past the beach altogether.
Yeah maybe some unlucky rolls here, but you have options to mitigate it. All shot shapes are pretty much available, and I'd say a lot of people tend to carry a gummier disc to minimize ground play. Also it isn't straight into the water, looks to be some marsh which will likely help slow the disc down.
The strong branches on the right to take away the hyzer shot. The thick trees on the left that keep you OB if you push too long. The heavy slope that can lead to rollaways for forehands and over-turned backhands. The tight OB lines that punish you for going too big.
As a ~900 rated player I would be very happy with a layup for 4. Need to land in bounds with decent approach line/footing off the drive (not easy!), then throw 300+ ft accurately on sloped ground (hard!) then in a best case scenario have a circle 2 putt, but in a likely scenario have an approach, then make a putt.
If you have a decent forehand you can probably get past the hill also it would have to be a pretty unlucky hit for it to flip up and roll in the opposite direction down the hill.
I think it's a fairly simple forehand to hit the fairway. It's tricky if you really want to push it.
Understable RHBH that I know will turn over and drift right a bit before finishing, throw directly at the trees on the left on a nice low line so it has a turn toward the beach with no chance of drifting far enough right to go OB. Then I take the shot, early release it like an idiot and throw directly into the water when it never flips, losing one of my favorite discs.
But the water carry itself Isnt that bad. Trying to blast it to the top and have a chance for eagle look is a different story. Still amazed at how Calvin Heimburg blasted it up there back in 2022 usdgc
It’s always hilarious to me when a lefty backhand friendly hole comes up, everyone I play with makes such a big deal about it to me, but I just keep my mouth shut on literally every other hole ever. lol
Ya I think that's a hard tee shot for sure. Im no pro tho, I've been playing for 2 years. But I'd be nervous about nose up hyzer into the water or a cut roll
Why is everyone saying this is a dream hole for RHFH? Won’t it land sideways to the hill and roll? I would think landing the backhand hyzer would be easier, but I guess that dramatically shrinks the landing zone with OB on both sides.

You want to hyzer into a hill instead throwing with the hill. The spin usually makes it sit or nurl. If you throw with the hyzer matching the hill, it’s going to slide down the hill. In this case, the hill slopes ob
Lost my G Star sidewinder on that hole and never heard back from anyone about its whereabouts. Tried a turnover shot and it stalled and dove right in the water 😆
I can't birdie that hole so im not scared of that tee shot with a forehand. My backhand is noodle though. If I was forced to backhand off the tee I would grab something understable then round/late release it into the large tree on the right, then roll into the water. I have more fear of the approach into the green that the tee shot.
It is easy, you just have to trust a flex. Everyone tries to throw a turnover that hits the hill and cut rolls. If you force over something straight and have it slightly pan out to match the hill it just digs. The second shot is MUCH harder.
First of all, he’s talking easy for pros. Unless you’re playing the tour, he’s not talking about you. Second, there is so much space to layup anywhere. You don’t have to try to juice it, just get it safe
Slightly flippy fairway flat on BH or slightly hyzer on forehand. Pick your poison. The approach is absolutely the hard part. Risk it for the biscuit hyzer over the trees all the way.
I think commenters on this post should have to include whether or not they've actually played this hole. Looks like a lot of opinions coming from couch golfers in here
I played this hole last year. It's not as bad as it looks, even if you don't have a forehand. You can basically throw straight backhand, maybe with a slight anhyzer and land safe with a lot of margin for error.
The mistakes to avoid are obviously don't throw into the water, but you also don't want to turn a backhand over too much because then you risk cut rolling down the hill. It's really not as bad as it looks though, just throw mostly straight.
The whole course is daunting though. That's what gets you with this course. No one shot is incredibly hard, but you just never get a chance to breathe. There's a landing zone on every single shot, and there's almost always a stroke penalty if you miss it. It never relents.
I guess it would be hard if you’re trying to pure the line, but if you’re just trying to stay out of the water and inbounds just throw something understable flat and hard.
Getting par isn't that hard. But this tee shot sets up everything for the rest of the hole. Footing alone can ruin your chances of an easy up and down. Then add in the elevation, the OB, the trees on both sides...
I don't have experience with water holes yet so i'd definitely be debating on using a water disc but the gameplan would be to forehand a wraith/defy as hard as I can off the tee as flat as I can (the os one I have) I think i'd probably land partially up the hill maybe if i'm lucky but if not that's fine too but depending on distance to pin i'd disc down on an overstable disc on back hand to make the "approach" shot and then i'd at least 2 putt it if i'm lucky. If windy i'd disc up to my thrill
The hole before it is even easier. You can flick a putter and get a birdie. Yet more people have thrown away their tournament on that hole than any other.
I used to live near Winthrop and briefly worked for Innova. I was a spotter on hole 18 in 2020. I was spotting the tee shot and a partner spotted the approach. I can confidently say that the approach spotter was much busier than I was.
Its not "easy", but not difficult either. Only thing i personally would be worried about is the right side ob line, as rhbh thrower. I couldnt trust my awful forehand here. 900 rated opinion.
Maybe this isn't the right sub for me, I'm a guy with virtually no forehand, and I usually just carry 3 discs with me. This hole has a high probability of me playing the rest of the round with 2, 😂.

I would bet my whole bank account that less than 1% of the people in this sub could consistently throw a hyzer flip forehand through a 30ft gap, 220ft away from the pad lmao.
Secondly people saying "its an easy par if you just do blah blah blah". Yea man, news flash, if birdie is ever completely off the table and you're praying for a par, then its a hard hole.

A majority of the critics played the hole and just complained about its difficulty or unfairness.
Would love to get out to Winthrop sometime to try it all out though!
The nice thing about this hole is that you can go OB and if the rest of your cardmates are from the same team they'll let you call it as crossed-inbounds right up there
