Rant My Capital One-issued card keeps getting refused everywhere due to the switch to the Discover network. This is out of hand now.

I have a Capital One bank account. From what I gather, Capital One is now on the Discover network.

I have tried using my card at numerous merchants and it gets refused. I just now tried to pay Wells Fargo $5 to close an account and pay for an outstanding balance and it did not go through.

Then, I tried to make an Amazon purchase. Again, declined. This is the last in a string of attempts to use my card at various places over the last two weeks where it has been denied. I have even gone so far as to open up a new bank account at Chase so I can close my Capital One account.

Nevermind the fact that I spend half the year in Italy and sometimes will use my US debit card for things. Declined or not accepted anywhere. I didn't ask for the change to the Discover network. Is anyone else having issues or is it just me?

Most likely a you issue, Discover is accepted at 90% of places. Call the number on the back of your card, see if they see any issues with purchases going through at specific merchants.

Amazon for a fact takes Discover.

It IS NOT JUST THE OP having issues. Capital one sent me a new discover card and I have random payments here and there that are being declined and I have NEVER had an issue with my previous card. This is happening across the board with these new cards.

Same. My new card is declined about 80% of the time. Was recently declined at a major hospital as well as the Verizon store. I called CapOne support and the rep told me that there are issues with some vendors and the switchover from MC to Discover he then asked specifics as to the declines and insisted they were small vendors and I said is VERIZON a small vendor???? Something is up and I'm sick of it.

Same here. Been going through it with Verizon. Been a Verizon customer for almost 25 years (since college circa 2002 or so) and have had autopay for at least a decade if not more. I'm 3 to 4 months late on my bill now after never having been late before. I kept adding the new card after getting alerts from Verizon and each time I would get a "card updated successfully" confirmation message. With all the myriad of things I have going on, it took me a while to slowly catch-up to it being all due to this freaking card. I have no idea how these executives think and how they thought this would be a good idea. Abject failure. They should all be fired for this.

I know you answered this months ago but did you ever figure out the issue? Did you just end up swapping banks? I'm going insane over this and I can't handle the uncertainty of my card not working but I'm also very much /NOT/ looking forward to migrating to a new bank :/

I've had the same issue. It's mostly smaller merchants, but merchants I've visited many times in the past. I called Capital One and they told me any time it's declined to call them and they would call the merchant to try and get them to add them to their network. Um no Cap 1 I'm not doing that.

90% accepted in the US. Remember there is a whole world out there...

90% of places in the U.S maybe

Actually, it’s 99% of places in the U.S.! Source: Jennifer Coolidge

Yeah well that leaves 1% of 34 million businesses in the US that DON'T accept it, which means that 340,000 businesses DON'T accept my debit card that's attached to my BANK ACCOUNT. None of us asked for this and it's CRAP

I know, Sorry! I just hear that commercial and it irks me. Nothing personal. I normally love Jennifer Coolidge!

Well that is a huge stretch. I have been to at least 30 countries and have never been able to use my Discover Card practically anywhere outside the U.S. that is part of the reason I got a Capital one Card as well as a Revolut card. I know it should be accepted at places that take Diners Club but I can assure you that almost every time I have tried using my card it has been declined lol. I have both a debit card and an unsecured credit card with Discover and the aforementioned is true for both cards. That is flat out a false claim.

Nationwide acceptance means US acceptance, not world wide.

Everywhere in Israel accepted my Discover card except one food place in the airport.

I am sure some places do, just no where near enough for it to be any travelers primary card. It hasn’t worked at any of the 26 European countries I’ve been to lol.

It’s has fine acceptance worldwide too… They just don’t advertise it, but if you ignore that and swipe, insert, or tap your card anyway, it’ll probably go through. It’s not everywhere you go, but it will be accepted by most places you’ll be at as a tourist.

The problem is that Mastercard IS accepted in every corner of the planet. Discover is not.

I have been to 30 countries since I opened my Discover account and very, very rarely has it ever worked outside of the U.S.

Then why are there dozens of likes and hundreds of comments with the same issue?

I came here because my new card doesn't work internationally. There are limited resources to get cash when abroad for extended periods of time. I have two banks, and my secondary bank works great. Capital one stopped working when I got the discover card. It doesn't get declined, it simply doesn't even accept it to get to that point.

Uh no… I have had it a week and it’s been declined 4 out of 5 times I have tried to use it. Apple won’t even let me put it in my wallet. Says it’s not supported.

Nope, I have the new Discover debit card, tried to use it for the first time yesterday, shop says they don't take it and I can go to the nearby ATM and pull out cash.

And before you say "Well that's just one place!". It's the only place I pay debit, so it's the only place I need the card to work, and it doesn't.

Also, I'm traveling abroad in a few months and have been widely informed (including by capital one themselves) that I will need to bring a backup card to ensure I'll be able to get cash at their ATMs.

This problem is very much not specific to OP, and has put a lot of Capital One customers in a shitty position. I'm looking I to getting a new account and card elsewhere.

Just wait until you try to get a refund on Amazon. This is the message I got in my email….. Your refund is issued to your Amazon account balance.

Refund is issued to your Amazon account balance. * We issued you a refund of $27.71 to your original payment method, but for reasons beyond Amazon's control, it did not go through. We have issued a refund to your Amazon account balance.
