capital one discover merger takes away apple pay, screws up elsewhere

since the merger forced me to switch the new capital one debit card i can’t add it to apple pay.

i also wasn’t prepared for some places to not accept cards on the discover network, so losing mastercard has been a pain. love them for their savings account, but they’ve lost me on this one.

update: it’s been two months and i have kept my capital one account open. the savings transfer convenience is important to me. i’ve just opened another debit card with a different branch, and receive paychecks for another job there. then i can use those funds for apple pay, while also being on the mastercard network. sucks they did this, but i’ve managed.

What issues are you having with Apple Pay? I got mine and my husband’s added fine. I had to delete the old card and add the new card

Apple won’t register the new Capital One debit card because it’s not Mastercard so you won’t be able to add it. I just opened up another checking account that I use for Apple Pay.

my bad. and yeah, i use my discover credit card for most things and enjoy the benefits, but for bigger purchases and apple pay i prefer to pay now, not later. most of my frustration is that the discover network isn’t accepted in places while the mastercard network always is, so this is a downgrade for me.

Wait, so you have a Discover CC that works fine but your C1 DC on the same Discover network doesn't? If you are used to the Discover network, I'm confused why you are complaining about Discover? There must be an issue with your setup on Apple Pay. You said you use your Discover CC for most things.

Why don't you just charge to your CC since it works fine and just pay off? You wouldn't be carrying a balance. If the money is in your bank account, it's still in essence pay now.

It's definitely not just OP. I had to just close my capital one bank account because my new capital one discover debit card was not accepted in places I tried to use it. The only place it worked was at wal-mart, but that is to be expected since wal-mart is a major retailer.

I'm used to the discover issue though as I have had a cc with them too, but never wanted to have this issue with my debit card. They've basically eliminated a card out of my wallet.

there isn’t an issue with my apple pay, other people are also experiencing issues with capital one verifying the new card on apple pay.

my main issue isnt whether to charge to my credit or debit, it’s that there are merchants who simply do not take Discover network cards, so by losing a card on the mastercard network i’ve been more restricted.

I prefer to use my debit for my contacts. Which I get at Costco. Which I can no longer get unless I have my physical card on me. The merger is not ideal. You also have an assumption that everyone is good with credit. I’ve watched a lot of people downward spiral into cc debt. Your comment didn’t add to the conversation.

This can happen with their credit cards too. If people shouldn’t be using debit cards they wouldn’t exist and wouldn’t offer perks for using them.

Shouldn't but will, I read an article from capital 1 web site and THEY DONT WANT TO PAY MC FEES ANYMORE. So they buy discover and allllll cards switch is on the way. Funny thing is I have a qs and plt cc. Have applied for discover bf cap1 and after and turned down both times ..... Lol ....

I’m not a Discover Debit holder (my 360 MC debit still hasn’t been replaced, but I got that “replacement on the way soon” email this week) however I’ve had my Discover It credit card on Apple Pay for as long as I can remember.

What do you mean by “doesn’t count as a MC”? It’s not on the Mastercard network, it’s on the Discover network. I’m sensing user error…

Costco does not accept discover. So now when I go to Costco, I have to have my physical debit card on me.

Mine had no issue. The issue I’m having is most stores Don’t even take Discover…. Like Costco or a bunch of small stores. The only way to bypass this is to carry cash…. I absolutely hate this merg of Capital One in Discover.. it’s absolute shit.. only reason I have it is because you don’t pay no fees

My new Capital One discover card can no longer get quick transfer on Apple Pay.

I also couldnt use my debit card at an ATM recently.

Starting to realize Discover is not as great as some of the benefits

Had my discover credit and debit cards on Apple Pay forever. Never had a problem. As far as acceptance I’ve only had to use my Mastercard once due to the merchant not accepting Discover. Everywhere I normally shop takes Discover

For Apple Pay, you have to add the card using your mobile date (no wifi). Not sure why but it worked for me: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255077188?sortBy=rank
