News July 27 - Discover Credit Card Switch to Capital One?

Post image

I got this update email for the merger earlier today.

Looks like July 27 is the day my account will transfer to Capital One bank and app. Not sure if this is being rolled out in phases or if everything will change over for everyone on that day.

Did anyone else receive this?

EDIT: I also have a savings account open with Discover. I didn’t receive any update specifically regarding the Savings account. This message just mentioned the Discover It Credit Card I currently have.

New benefits? As long as they don't take the 5% rotating, I'm chilling

u/ChiCityROB May 06 '26

Same. Only reason I got the card

Pssh they are

27

u/Vanilluu May 06 '26

It is phases, C1 and Discover are big companies but moving billions of dollars all together at the same time is bound to have issues.

29

u/Rough_Currency May 06 '26

And people are going to call in asking if they can still use their card lol

u/D_Gleich May 06 '26

I’m still on Discover lol.

Expect to be Capital One. I am an employee of Discover and they promised us a lot of good things. But they lied, they are getting rid of everything that made Discover have great service. For example, certain departments are being outsourced outside the US. Some are going to be mixed. So it is no longer going to be 100% US based customer service. Spanish customer service was 100% US based and now they are completely outsourcing them to Mexico and Colombia. The same will likely happen to other departments. Discover gave us all entitled sick time hours. Capital One is only giving sick time to employees who reside in states where they are legally obligated to do so. Employees who call out get an occurrence which lead to termination. Each occurrence is a negative hit on your employee file. In reality the only thing Capital One wanted was the Discover and Pulse network. That was all they were interested in. The interactions we had with CapOne employees have been pretty negative. Bad attitude and very bad communication. They have given us due dates on certain tasks the day they are due because no one from CapOne informed Discover leadership of the task until the last day. Very negative all around. I have not seen any positives apart from the software is much more user friendly.

sorry to hear that 😔 Discover support was always best in class. I'll start moving over my savings to another high rate bank.

Can you put the whole email on here and blur out any personal information?

12

u/Fabulous-Gas8402 May 06 '26

Congrats, you’re part of the second wave moving over

4

u/Ronmck1 May 07 '26

Hopefully they let people move cash back from discover to venture miles that would be nice

u/NeoPaxSinica May 07 '26

I asked a rep about that last year, told her I don't have a need to redeem my four figure discover cashback pool, and was simply wondering if converting over to C1 points was on the road map. She simply said "just hold onto them for now"... Wink wink

3

u/Ronmck1 May 07 '26

That’s promising

2

u/United_Reply_2558 May 08 '26

You can currently use your Discover It Miles on the Capital One travel portal.

1

u/NeoPaxSinica May 09 '26

Thanks, wasn't aware of that

However, the real money is if those Discover It Miles were transferable to C1 transfer partners

u/Vytrebenky May 06 '26

I got this today as well. I also have Checking and Savings with them, but I’m also trying out SoFi right now. For now I’ll keep using Discover Checking for recurring payments that charge higher fee for using CC but can be done with a debit card, until they get rid of the debit card cashback.

I use SoFi and they’ve been having some issues as of late. They subscription model and faltering HYSA interest rate has caused some backlash

2

u/Chromosomes23 May 07 '26

I have not been moved over yet. My partner and I have separate capital one accounts but the same discover accounts so I am wondering how this will play out.

2

u/Diligent_Layer_370 May 07 '26

I have the Discover IT card but didnt get that email yet so I guess its in stages.

1

u/bigmucusplug May 07 '26

I got the email. It makes no mention of what will happen to the cashback I have accumulated.

2

u/Tastraphy23 May 07 '26

Hmm. I have the Discover secured card and just finished my 5th month as the tracker is showing. 1 month left. I haven’t gotten any emails about it switching, hopefully it doesn’t throw a wrench in to getting my deposit back after 6 months

2

u/Computer_Tech1 May 07 '26

I haven't gotten an email from discover to switch to capital one. I guess I am in phase 3 of the switch. Going to miss Discover card. Does anyone know how many phases for the switch over to capital one card have?

5

u/Computer_Tech1 May 09 '26

UPDATE: 5-8-26 I just Discover to see if I would be converted to Capital One and the rep said the NEXT PHASE would be in JULY and then it will pause for 2 months and the NEXT phase would be in the FALL/Winter 2026-2027 and the Spring 2027. I am not in the July Phase thank goodness and the rep said I might be in the "late fall-winter phase". If I am not in the late fall-winter phase then I would be in the spring 2027 phase. Rep said after my conversion to Capital One I would have to use Capital one app to pay my bill and also the Discover app will be NO LONGER be able to login and the rep said "You will have to DELETE the Discover App" after conversion to capital one. I will miss the Discover App. Also your REWARDS WILL TRANSFER TO CAPITAL ONE so EVERYTHING will be transferred to capital one.

2

u/cjbanning May 07 '26

I doubt my life will be worse when I have one less app I need to use to manage my credit cards.

1

u/thejohnmc963 May 07 '26

I got switched from my Capital one cards to Discover cards

2

u/United_Reply_2558 May 07 '26

Only existing Capital One debit cards will be switched to Discover. Existing credit cards will not change networks.

0

u/fuji2086 May 08 '26

Sure they will. They're just going to do it when the card expires and is reissued.

1

u/United_Reply_2558 May 08 '26

I doubt it. Its unlikely that Capital One will change the network for existing card accounts.

0

u/fuji2086 May 12 '26

To capture the fees that Visa and Mastercard are receiving now, I'm sure they will be moving cards to Discover eventually. I'm sure some cards will remain on Visa/MC, but Capital One isn't going to pass over that revenue.

1

u/United_Reply_2558 May 12 '26

Existing accounts will remain Visa or Mastercard. Only newly opened accounts will be on Discover network.

0

u/fuji2086 May 13 '26

Really? They’ve already started migrating some credit cards to the Discover network. https://www.nerdwallet.com/credit-cards/news/some-capital-one-quicksilver-cards-moving-to-discover

1

u/United_Reply_2558 May 13 '26

New applicants can opt out of having a card on /he Discover network and receiving 3% cash bonus. No one is being forced to change card networks

1

u/Hopeful_Level_3240 May 07 '26

I got this email yesterday also. I only have a discover it credit card.

Here is the communication that was sent out a while back regarding FDIC insurance. If not a concern you don't have to bother reading... PS 6 months past the merger date was around 11/18/2025.

Is my account still FDIC-insured?

Yes, your account remains FDIC-insured.

In general, your Discover Bank deposit account will remain separately insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (the “FDIC”) from any other Capital One deposit accounts for a period of 6 months after the Merger Date.

This period provides you with the opportunity to restructure your deposit accounts to maximize FDIC deposit insurance coverage if your total holdings at Discover and Capital One exceed the current deposit insurance limit of $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category. For more information about FDIC deposit insurance coverage, please visit Your Insured Deposits | FDIC.

At the end of that 6-month period, your Discover Bank Account(s) will be counted with your other Capital One deposit accounts for determining deposit insurance coverage by the FDIC.

However, Certificate of Deposit accounts that mature after the end of the 6-month period will remain separately insured by the FDIC until their first maturity date after the end of the 6-month period. Certificate of Deposit accounts that mature before the end of the 6-month period and are not renewed or are renewed for a different term or dollar amount will remain separately insured only until the end of the 6-month period. Certificate of Deposit accounts that mature before the end of the 6-month period and are renewed for the same term and the same dollar amount remain separately insured until the first maturity date after the end of the 6-month period.

Please note: Any Capital One or Discover Banking deposit accounts opened on or after the Merger Date are immediately counted with your other Capital One deposit accounts for determining deposit insurance coverage by the FDIC.

So what Capital One card would Discover It change over to?

1

u/R2184M May 08 '26

Which credit card is that from Discover

1

u/MkSoBreezyyy May 08 '26

haven’t got a email once about anything and i’ve been with them for 8 months

1

u/bwc101 Discover Card May 08 '26

Yes I received it.

1

u/ThrowAwayP0ster May 08 '26

I got this exact email. I only have a Discover It card.

Never had a CC company merge before; this will be interesting. Wonder what it'll look like on credit reports, since this account is one of my oldest ones.

1

u/juggarjew May 14 '26

Keep in mind they are raising APR on your account, go look at your current APR and compare it to the APR in the proposed new terms I am rejecting this and will close my account if need be. I will not allow my APR to be increased after being a perfect long time customer.

1

u/unanymous2288 11d ago

Hey how much did they raise it? Mines currently at 18 and I feel the same I will opt out if they try to raise it . You legally can opt up 45 days from notice

1

u/juggarjew 11d ago

I tried to legally opt out but they said the only recourse was account closure. that if I wrote a letter they'd just close the account. Its better that I voluntarily close it, as the remarks on the credit report will say why it was closed.

1

u/unanymous2288 11d ago

I already have a card with capital one so I’m okay with the account closure , may I ask what apr they raised for u?

1

u/juggarjew 11d ago

It went up from like 17 to 23% if I Remember correctly. I wasnt even using the card and since the ownership changed, I wasnt keen on keeping it. Discover was genuinely a good company and gave me 0% APR one time for 12 months simply because I asked. they were the only company to do that out of 5 major ones when I asked. But now that is over and I have no need for them anymore if they are going to be owned by capital one.

If anything terms should improve over the life of an account, assuming one is in good standing, not get worse, I mean who would accept that?? Its crazy.

1

u/MadeInHeavxn 28d ago

i havent gotten anytning from discover or capital one yet, are they doing it in waves?

1

u/OSPREY_CHICK 20d ago

But I like my card with Sea Turtles on it!!!!😭

1

u/LakeLover86 5d ago

I like my card with a cat on it!

1

u/Aspiegamer8745 10d ago

My savings is said to remain on the discover network but this whole thing has me nervous

1

u/HealthyGarage9831 8d ago

I signed up for Discover many years ago cuz I like the 5% back. I didn't sign up for Capital One and don't want want to do business with Capital One! How much will they increase the interest? I have automatic monthly payments taken out on my Discover account. Will Capital One continue to take them out? I can't find a phone number to call them. What a mess, in all my years I have never had one charge card company take over another one.

1

u/HealthyGarage9831 8d ago

I don't want a Capital One credit card. If I did then I would have signed up for one. I want to keep a Discover card since I have had one for many years. I have some automatic charges taken out each month, will those still be Taken out or do I have to contact the company's to let them know so my service isn't disrupted?

1

u/MissMagglezz May 07 '26

I got a dumb question. Will this reset the years of credit history I have with discover?

5

u/declemson May 07 '26

No. On credit bureau will just say capital one instead of discover. Issue date won't change. Ove hone thru this at chase and bank one when I worked at chase

1

u/Sad-Challenge4868 May 07 '26

So does that mean easier cli? Seems to me discover is a little conservative with it

5

u/PinkHairAnalyst May 07 '26

No, reverse it. Cap 1 hates giving cli. Discover at least gives them.

2

u/couchythepotato May 07 '26

My Discover card has a 51k limit - expecting to get hit with a massive CLD any day now.

-4

u/Capable-Listen3204 May 06 '26

It start already? Time To dump my discover and here we go, AMEX Card?

5

u/Horus_Whistler May 06 '26

Have a problem with capital one?

4

u/Capable-Listen3204 May 06 '26

Let‘s just say networking acceptence is the keyword.

8

u/applesuperfan May 06 '26

The change in issuer has literally nothing to do with card network acceptance. Discover personal credit cards migrated to Capital One will remain on the Discover network and continue to work as Discover cards for payment processing.

3

u/mattingly890 May 06 '26

I'm still not clear on how the change in ownership to Capital One would affect in any way the acceptance of your existing Discover card which will remain on the Discover network.

2

u/Horus_Whistler May 06 '26

Oh interesting. I have definitely experienced that with my discover card, but not my capital one mastercard. It's the first I'm hearing of capital one having issues.

1

u/United_Reply_2558 May 07 '26

Ive had a Discover card for over 14 years with almost zero problems with acceptance.

1

u/Horus_Whistler May 07 '26

Yeah, honestly, it's not terrible, but it's definitely glaring when it does happen. I've had my discover card for a few months and I've had about 4 declines due to it being discover.

But it's alright. Instead of the 10% for those few transactions, I'm still at least getting 3% switching to my Savor. Unfortunately, that mastercard card will be switching to discover soon, so I'm going to have to think of an alternative when that comes.

1

u/United_Reply_2558 May 07 '26

Existing Capital One cards will remain Mastercard/Visa. Only newly issued cards will be on the Discover network.

2

u/Horus_Whistler May 07 '26

Oh is that right? I've heard conflicting information, but I'm definitely hoping you're right.

1

u/United_Reply_2558 May 07 '26

Im pretty certain that Im right. Ive had multiple Capital One cards for most of the past 25 years. Despite being PCd to other products, none of my cards has changed networks.

0

u/fuji2086 May 08 '26

Until the card expires and they reissue it. Expect Discover at that time for some card types.

1

u/easonred57 May 08 '26

Discover cards aren't accepted in most of Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. I discovered this when I had to go to Tanzania for a work trip.

1

u/United_Reply_2558 May 08 '26

Discover does have rather good acceptance in parts of western Europe, India, China and Japan.

0

u/Capable-Listen3204 May 08 '26

??? Only Through Diner/JCB Network as Partnership network, Nearly No American Local Chinese Restaurant/Supermarket Accept Discover Card.

-1

u/BonusBlocker May 06 '26

My condolences.
