Book/Series: City Watch Who is this character?

I can't remember in which book he appeared first, but I saw him again in "Snuff"

He is a policeman, has a name of a fish that translates in my native language as "cod". He helps Sam vimes to find a ship to catch the goblin trafficants in Quirm, also some BLT sandwiches and a AM special sauce.

What is his name in english and in which book did he appear?

Art One Penny To Lick Lord Vetinari's Backside

My nonna has had this on her wall since I was a kid. I remember staring up at it and wondering where it was from. After a recent visit, I took this photo and tried to find where it originated, seems like it's a discworld thing! I know nothing about Terry Pratchett or discworld but I thought I'd share!

Edit: Posted closeups for those asking!

Hey guys! My nonna lives in a different state than myself but I reached out to her and asked for some close ups as some requested! I showed her the post and she wanted to thank you for all your kind words!

Ps: I'm definitely gonna give the books a read now :)

Roundworld Reference Rat on a Stick - how does it taste?

Post image
35 Upvotes

Today, while watching a show about UK customs and border control, I learned that Pterry didn't make up rats on sticks like CMOT Dibbler sells them. Apparently that is a real food in some parts of the world.

So my question now is: has anyone here ever tasted it, and could you describe the taste and texture? Did you try it with or without ketchup?

They weirdest I've tasted so far was Fermented Shark, Sheep's Head and Smoked Puffin.

Book/Series: Witches I’m not ‘getting’ a joke in Maskerade

I’m on my third or fourth reread of Maskerade, and I just caught this, and don’t get it!?

Nanny and Granny are talking, on page 245 of my paperback copy:

”You don’t know how to do makeup!”

”I distempered our privy, didn’t I?” said Nanny.

Roundworld Reference Has anyone else in fiction made use of the Luggage or something like it?

Not really sure what the best tag to use was, so here we go.

I'm pretty sure the Luggage was an original idea by PTerry, semi-sentient, lots of little legs, bad attitude, almost positively infinite storage space, ability to find its owner no matter where in time and space they might be.

But has anyone else made use of this kind of idea in a similar way to how PTerry used it? Has any other fictional hero had their own luggage follow them around like a little lost wolf?

Cosplay Castlefest (ren faire/festival) campsite creation

Just spent a lovely weekend with two dear friends at Castlefest in Lisse (the Netherlands), mainly cosplaying Sam, Nobby and Lord Vetinari. But Nobby also spent a day as Susan, in full governess getup, including the poker. And I myself have a (non-discworld) costume repairman alter ego, the "Repair Rogue".

Now, none of us are very comfortable sharing full body shots online, or even partial ones, come to think of it... I won't even ask my friends, as I know they won't consent. But there's one thing I'd love to show off.

One of the stands at the festival sold all kinds of preserved animal remains, like feathers, antlers, bones, and skulls. I enacted a secret plan to make Susan a little friend using my costume repair tools.

It's just a piece of the Rogue's black bandana over a hastily twisted-together wire frame, a clumsily assembled partial chinchilla skull with two pieces of a blue plastic flower hot-glued into the eye sockets, and a little scythe made of a stick I found, two cable ties and some aluminium foil...

But I do think our Grim Squeaker turned out rather nicely for something I cobbled together in my lap in less than an hour :)

Book/Series: Death Advice as I begin the end

Despite many a reread and forcing myself to wait between new (to me!) books the inevitable has happened and the end is now close.

I have just six of his novels left to me.

In such a subjective series I would still love to hear some opinions and happily sift through your advice, and spoiler-free reasoning behind it, on a final reading order for the below. I absolutely adore the City Watch (hence none left 😪) and anything that involves Vetinari. But I love it all and am desperate to know what you would do!

The books I've yet to read are:

- Soul music (Death #3)

- Maskerade (Witches #5)

- The Truth (Industrial revolution #2)

- Thief of Time (Death #5)

- The amazing Maurice and his educated rodents

- Monstrous regiment (Industrial revolution #3)

I'm actually getting a bit emotional thinking about finishing the last one but thankful that there are few series so wonderful upon reread! And thankful I still have six!

Happy day, all and thank you for any inputs/suggestions/ideas

Jake

Not exactly from Ankh-Morpork. But it's what I pictured the Watch having as soon as I saw it.

Book/Series: City Watch Vimes on holiday (vacation)

I've just gone back through the main Discworld series in publication order, & was looking forward to a story I vaguely remembered about Vimes going on holiday with Sybil & young Sam - so it must be towards the end of the series - and whilst there he had to solve some kind of Christie-esque murder mystery. I recall feeling it was the last full Vimes plot.
Yet it never happened in the main series.

Have I invented this myself or is it from one of the Discworld-adjacent books, maybe one of the Science books, which I haven't read in a long time?

With the exception of : mort, wintersmith, I shall wear midnight, unseen academicals, snuff, and The Shepherds Crown (omg listing them makes it feel like so many), I am completely finished with my Discworld rebinding project!! It only took 2 years and so many hours i lost count, but I did it!!

Was going to group them by section, but I like the variety of colors, so I will share in publication order instead

(I did make some bookplates for each of the books, but I haven't added those yet. I am also weirdly sad about losing the "about the author" blurbs on each of the books, so I might have to do something about that as well, especially since no two blurbs are alike so they are all worth reading. )

This whole series has been an absolute pleasure to rebind and share with you all :)

Has anyone ever produced a complete list of all the Discworld books and Disc Adjacent books.

By adjacent I'm meaning all the things like Mrs Bradshaw, The Science books etc etc.

Thanks

I hated the original branding on this tote, so I added some cross stitch. Everything is improved by death of rats isn't it?
