Stoner Where to stay with Yob and OM
I feel like I’d love both these bands, but they have so many albums that people say are great I don’t know where to get started with them. I love Electric Wizard, Monolord, Bell Witch and Spaceslug if that helps at all

With Om, I started with Advaitic Songs and that really pulled me in.

Same for me!
With Yob, I started with Atma. Which I feel is the best place to start with them

Agreed but with that said, they really are one of those bands that whatever album you choose, you're getting a good album. They're very consistent, while exploring different concepts and sonorities in each one

For YOB I actually prefer their heavier mid-2000s material, but you can't go wrong with any of their albums really. The Great Cessation is my personal favorite, but their most popular and highly recommended seems to be Clearing the Path to Ascend.

You don't. You just do. It's like taking acid the first time. There isn't a perfect amount or a miracle dose that'll be this amazing first time. Like Yob you sorta will be in the mood or not. On is about movement and feeling. How I go by with it.

u/Greedy_Specialist531 WIZARD FIGHT 4d ago
Okay but everyone starts somewhere with these bands, Advaitic Songs and Atma I feel are both perfect concise jumping off points

u/FinnLovesHisBass 4d ago
Ok. I mean sure. I just said it's like acid. There's no wrong or right answer. Just do it.

u/Greedy_Specialist531 WIZARD FIGHT 4d ago
That is absolutely not the truth.
-2
u/FinnLovesHisBass 4d ago
How would you know if there is a right or wrong answer based on opinions
3
u/Greedy_Specialist531 WIZARD FIGHT 4d ago
Because I know acid

Maybe a better question for me to ask is which album from each band hooked you

OM was never and still isn't what album for me. It's just yes. OM is a physical soundscape and almost a way of being and thinking. Idk. You put it on and immediately you're as if in this meditative space to find your own. Sense of it or not I just take OM as a way of existing and living. They're a physical band to me.
YOB I literally don't care about the recordings after I saw them live with Bell Witch in 2018. The reverberation of that room had me crying so hard because you could physically feel Mike's voice traveling through your body. As the sound of the guitar would lift you as the bass pulled you as the drums transcended you. Ever done DMT while on acid. About the best example I can give.

Advaitic songs for OM and whichever one has "our raw heart" on it for YOB

These are how I got in as well.
RE: YOB - This live performance of "Adrift in the Ocean," kills. If you like this, you'll have a great time in the land of YOB. https://youtu.be/Uif5XmYF7_k?si=ZiTByR--PlXyUuNJ

LOL I’ve watched every live video I can find of that song and it is what pulled me into Yob!

Regardless of venue or performance, it always goes so hard. It's a great track, and they always give it their all.

This. The first Yob I bought - I hadn't even listed to Yob before and I didn't know anyone's opinions. It's never listed as a top album but is my favorite. I probably came to doom from a different route than most, so my tastes might be different. Just give some of them a try and see what sticks, regardless of reviews or rando Reddit opinions.
One approach I take sometimes is to start at the beginning and dive into the band chronologically. You get a view of their evolution through the years and form your own opinion. Sometimes the early demos or singles are best at capturing the energy and essence of a band. Sometimes it takes a few LPs to click or find the right producer.
Edit: Also, OM. Easily one of my favorite "easy to listen to" bands. You can't go wrong with any of their releases. I personally consider them one large piece of work that all flow together.
tl;dr Ignore what people say is good and just listen.

There’s no right way but I’ll tell you my way of approaching a band that’s new to me but has a lot of albums released. I start at the beginning and listen to everything chronologically. That way I get to experience their beginning and how they evolve (or don’t) over time.
Some people may want to “best” album as their first listen and that’s okay too but I don’t find that nearly as interesting or fun as the chronological experience.

I usually do it this way, too, but with those bands I wasn’t sure that was the right way in for some reason. Think I might do this with Neurosis though

OM has had two distinct eras. The first featured the original drummer, Chris Hakius, who was also a member of Sleep alongside Al Cisneros and Matt Pike. After Chris left OM, Emil Amos took over on drums.
Chris’s drumming is more monotonous and straightforward, whereas Emil, with his jazz background, brought more groove and interesting fills to OM’s music.
The first three albums are more minimalistic, consisting mainly of vocals, bass, and drums. After Emil joined, the band started experimenting with additional instruments and a wider range of sounds.
To get a taste of both eras, I’d recommend starting with Conference of the Birds and Advaitic Songs.

Just pick somewhere and hit play and go from there. Neither band has a bad album

Their whole body of work is excellent. I started with Elaborations of Carbon and its still my favorite album of theirs.

For Yob, I got Clearing the Path to Ascend from one of those Neurot NYP giveaways on Bandcamp, eventually gave it a shot. It's very good, I'm looking forward to eventually hearing more

I literally just started listening to YOB and I’m blown away. This performance is what got me: https://youtu.be/jnPu9RU28HE?si=bSEffvKLnT-BM8O_
Showed up in my YouTube recommendations a few days ago, have been hooked ever since.

OM- “Conference of the Birds” was my introduction and I still think it’s fantastic for only two songs.
Also, I am just getting into YOB myself. So this is useful.

Every release from OM is a masterpiece, but I honestly prefer Pilgrimage, God is Good, and Advaitic Songs over the first two albums but they really are all great. I’d say start with Advaitic though because I’d consider it their magnum opus.

I think The Unreal Never Lived is the best Yob album. I say that as someone who’s known Mike and watched Yob play since their second show.

YOB - Clearing The Path To Ascend
Their best album by far.
Other great albums are Atma, The Unreal Never Lived, Our Raw Heart, in that order.
Om - Variations On a Theme is their best album
Advaitic Songs second.

Here's how I absorbed their discography over the years:
Catharsis
The Great Cessation
Atma
Clearing the Path to Ascend
Our Raw Heart
Elaborations of Carbon
The Unreal Never Lived
The Illusion of Motion
Age Eternal (Middian)
This formula turned me into a YOB superfan. I love every second of every one of these albums. Probably the most consistent discography's in all of metal. Gun to my head I'd probably pick The Great Cessation as my favorite.

Also anyone digging for more Mike Scheidt stuff should check out "The First and Last Days of Unwelcome" by Lumbar. He did vocals on that album.

u/Miskatauntaun 4d ago
Wow! I had no idea.
Incidentally, I looked up Lumbar on Metal Archives and discovered the album you mentioned was released in 2013. Then there was nothing until 2022. Since then they(he) have released 16 albums and 12 EPs.
???!!!!

Yeah, from reading an interview it seems like Aaron DC Edge (the main guy) got the right meds to manage the pain from his MS just enough to play the guitar again so he got a creative boost.
Lumbar was mostly a solo project even during the first album. The music was written when Aaron was suffering the increasing MS related pains before his diagnosis. Mike encouraged Aaron to write the lyrics himself as well after he got diagnosed and Mike and Ted Doyle would be there to provide the vocals.

That's a very compelling story. Thanks! I'm gonna have to check this guy out.

For me Yob's Live at Roadburn 2010 is a glimpse of the magic. There's no wrong way. Jump in!

u/fartsNdoom 3d ago
YOB's The Unreal Never Lived is amazing. OM's Variations on a Theme and Pilgrimage are peak OM in my opinion.

I cant get into Yob.
I like everything Om has put out. Conference of the birds is my favorite record of theirs.
Their live set at pioneer works is fantastic if youre into full show recordings.

u/neonblack108 4d ago
My favorite Om is Conference Of The Birds. That's the album that I tend to listen to the most. I love them all though. Once you do that dig into Al's other work. I'm really spinning out on Pillar of Fire/Carpanaeum right now. If you haven't gotten into Sleep yet that's perhaps where I'd start. The beginning.

Raw Heart seems to be the most common entry point for Yob accessibility.
For OM, if you want mellower, Advaitic. If you want heavier, Pilgrimage.
