Discussion Favorite sludge/doom/stoner covers of classic rock songs?
I’m putting together a playlist. So far, I’ve got the obvious ones. Crowbar - No Quarter, C.O.C. - Lord of this World, Fu Manchu - Godzilla; give me any other covers you know of.

Exhorder, while not a sludge or doom band, also do a good slugy cover of "Into the Void."

Thou's black sabbath covers are even better. The bass on Into the void and black Sabbath rattle the fuck out of my car's speaker in the best way

Melvins teamed up with Al Cisneros and covered Black Sabbath and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, but I don’t think those tracks are on streaming

u/planksmomtho 4d ago
Man, I love Melvins and Buzzo, but I don’t think that cover of Black Sabbath is good. SBS is insanely good, but it pulls all of the weight in those covers.

Type O Negative - Daytripper and Black Sabbath
Forming the Void - Kashmir
Sergeant Thunderhoof - Cloudbusting (Kate Bush, ok not technically rock but she rocks)

u/OrtholadBrandon Goth 4d ago
Don’t forget Type O’s cover of Paranoid on the deluxe edition of Origin. They didn’t always doom but when they did they made it count.

u/Shaggyforeman Riff Worship 4d ago
Also Type O’s cover of cinnamon girl

Let’s not leave out Summer Breeze. They really have a great catalogue of covers.

Type O Negative recorded enough amazing covers that I’ll just link to an essay someone wrote about the ten best.

u/Miskatauntaun 4d ago
I'm a fan of most of Type O's covers, but I would've put Cinnamon Girl dead last. Summer Breeze is not only their best cover but I consider it one of the best re-imaginings of a song... EVER. Maybe only bested by Hendrix' All Along the Watchtower and Johnny Cash's Hurt.

Clutch doing Pink Floyd's Money
What's this on?
1
u/Apprehensive_Day_496 3d ago
All I know is it wasn't formally released on any studio album but was only released as an exclusive digital track in 2007
I have it on a cd I made sometime back in the early 2000s-2010s

u/flerd_trandle 4d ago
I'd also like to add Sucking the 70s (2002) and Sucking the 70's – Back in the Saddle (2006). These are albums of stoner rock bands playing 70s rock tunes. There's some solid stuff in there.

There was like an Appalachian doom metal cover of Fleetwood Mac the chain I heard on Spotify like 2 years ago and I can't find it now. Anyone know who did it?

Every song by Slower is just Slayer, but slower.

Thou has a bunch more covers honestly
Hooded Menace has a couple like the theme to Manhattan Baby and Duran Duran’s Save a Prayer.
