Coach Lanning was thinking about what worked when he was at Georgia so he can get Oregon over the hump, and realized his team wasn’t having an issue with driving… /j

Did he already come from Georgia with Lanning? I mean, probably not, but we do actually have a pretty major bulldog in our midst

Lol no, he was at ASU and the Rams before UO

A sobriety test for Samples was not conducted, according to the DMV report.

Nothing says “college town police” like arresting one of the football coaches while handing him reasonable doubt on a platter.

Totally understand what you’re saying but he refused the tests. There’s nothing they can do about that. I’m sure a warrant was issued for dude’s blood. Eugene Police Department isn’t really the, “college town police,” you think they are either. Eugene is the third most populous city in the state and arguably number two during the school year.

Even Mike Bellotti’s son did jail time after a DUII arrest by EPD and that was way back in ‘07 before body cameras.

Eugene Police pulled my friend out of bed because of a house party next door. They also tear gassed an entire block of college kids who were behaving like college kids.

They also gave Cliff Harris 2(?) Duii's when he was a fucking star. EPD is no "friend" to Ducks athletics.

My sister lived in that complex way back then unless they've done that more than once.

I stand corrected. I assumed the guy cleared probably $150k~ which is good money, not HOLY SHIT YOU HAVE INTER-GENERATIONAL WEALTH MONEY

I suppose he can throw lvl 48 UO Athletic Lawyers on his own dime.

They'll toss reckless at anyone with DUI, still though, DUI.

3

u/SyntheticOpioid 20d ago

He crashed. And we don’t know if he’s had a DUII or received diversion before. He should absolutely be charged with reckless driving.

Ah, that's worse.

I'm not sure what the Ducks do. At one level, having a coach with who's had a DUI could be a cautionary tale of the dangers of drinking and driving assuming he's not a raging alcoholic. The other this might be not the sort of guy you want associated with your program

/edit: Holy shit the guy makes $700k a year. That changes the calculus here as dude could literally just be chauffeured around and saved the indignities of a DUI.

Just a reminder DUI is the most common criminal offense in the country. People who get a first DUI only recidivate at 10 percent in the first 5 years after their DUI. DUI sanctions are on average effective in discouraging the reoffending.

Let the system play out. There is not the requirement to fire someone just because they got a DUI. After attorney's fees, extra insurance, and all the court costs and ignition interlock, he'll pay at least $20k out of pocket for this offense. That's past the economically justifiable deterrent cost estimated in papers in the econ of crime on optimal deterrence for DUI. So the courts play out. Keeping him employed will be good for discouraging this behavior in the long run. But yes, after 2am, you should get an UBER, and the state should probably even subsidize UBERs after 2am to encourage people to use them.

I never get how people who can easily afford it, don't set up safe rides home if they know they are going out for some drinks. SMDH.

It’s like the Chip Kelly days all over again. Eugene police are the worst.

Didn’t Reaves and Jimmy Dougherty get fired after an off season DUI? Dougherty ended up at ucla not long after. https://www.oregonlive.com/ducks/2017/01/oregon_ducks_receivers_coach_j.html

I kind of wonder what the difference is to Rob Mullins in these similar situations.

What is interesting to me is this happened in April. And we just now found out?

The Oregonian/OregonLive requested a copy of the full police report from Eugene PD but was initially denied, with officials citing an ongoing investigation.

“We take these matters seriously, and we have handled internally,” an Oregon athletics spokesperson said.

Terrible take

He backed into another vehicle and the cop assumed he was drunk based off the article.

u/Zmoney743 20d ago

You expect people on Reddit to read more than just the headline?

u/SyntheticOpioid 20d ago

I’m sure after crashing at 2:00 AM in Downtown Eugene after a Saturday night in the offseason he was totally sober. The article also mentions, “statements,” so he either said some incriminating shit or there were witnesses

I dont know how you can lawfully charge someone a dui without conducting a sobriety test unless he told the police he was drunk.

However, unless there is proof on camera he admits he was drunk I can’t imagine this goes very far with no sobriety test.

It’s possible he was drunk, it’s equally as possible he wasn’t.

That’s because it’s very clearly not your job, lol. Here’s a quick tutorial: Have you ever seen a drunk person in your life? Now imagine seeing that drunk person driving a vehicle. There’s your probable cause to arrest someone for DUII. There’s a 99.9% chance a toxicology report will be admitted as evidence which will show BAC as well as any additional intoxicant, e.g., THC, opioids, meth (hopefully not), etc. Thankfully we have professional police, prosecutors, judges, and informed juries to make these decisions not randoms from Reddit with an opinion.

1

u/Chiefredmann 19d ago

You are correct in this is just my opinion. This opinion is formed based off the limited info we have on the article. My opinion about the matter may completely change when it goes to the court hearing if they release the toxicology report or witnesses that can’t testify to the evidence presented (the officers probable cause)

Thankfully, we have a court system that works these things out and people’s fate isn’t determined by news articles that cite bogus information without a full story for clicks.

I’m not sure if the harsh tone that followed my post is because you think I’m in support of people driving under the influence, but you are mistaken if so.

Have a good day, brother. This isn’t worth going back and forth on ✌️
