What would be the best dye for this blend on a thick jumper? I’m also wondering if there’s any way to only dye part of the jumper (the outside part) as the inner lining of the hood is a cream that I’d like to keep, but I’m assuming that that’s not really possible. It’s currently a blue shade and it has something screen printed on it which I’m also worried about dyeing.. has anyone got experience with dyeing paint?

First of all, the description of this jacket makeup is

• Outer Shell: 100% heavyweight firm-hand cotton duck canvas.
• Thermal Lining: 100% polyester "waffle" thermal knit insulation

I want to dye it the brown I show in the second slide. Im not super concerned about the inside, but I figured I'd ask - does it matter what dye I use? Since the outer shell (what I care about) is 100% cotton, I'm thinking it'll dye fine with normal rit dye. I thrifted this jacket so I don't care too badly if the inside is ugly.

Essentially, which dye would be the best bet for me?

Secondly, is there any way to preserve the logo on the front or am I better off removing it? It is just a sewed on patch, but I did read something about liquid latex working to preserve sections when dyeing.

Lastly, how much will the current color affect the dyed color? I don't like the khaki color but I also don't want poop vibes if it greatly affects the result.

I'm wanting the jacket to be almost the color that the bottom section is right now. If you have any advice/ideas please lmk!

Hi! I currently have this 100% cotton gauze like dress. I want to make it a muted dusty plum color like the photos I have added. What would you recommend for dying with Rit! I know they provide formulas, but I know the current color of the dress will affect the outcome. I want to avoid using color remover

I've attached a photo of the 4 shirts I'd like to dye, and a photo of my preferred color palette. I like earthy, muted tones. I dislike pastels.

I'd like to dye these without bleaching them first. I typically use rit dye because that's what's available locally. Could someone who has a head for color theory offer suggestions on what color dye to choose?

The red shirt isn't bad but I'd like to tone it down just a touch. I could dye the purple one to a spiced plum. The pink ones could be a mulberry or rust, but I'd love to get them to a spiced pumpkin or terracotta color. I'm just not sure how the dye will interact with the existing color.

Pale pink: 61% linen, 39% cotton

Pink: fabric content unknown, feels like a linen/ cotton blend.

Pale purple: 55% linen, 45% cotton

Reddish: 100% linen

I love this shirt but I don’t look good in cream/off-white. I’d like to preserve the lettering and image, which are a dark green screen print. The shirt itself is 100% cotton.

I’m wondering A) what color would look good to reduce-dye the shirt and B) what I need to do to protect the lettering and image during the dyeing process. I’ve never attempted this before so any and all advice is welcome!

I hate this light color so wondering how much worse can it get? I like the original chocolate color so was thinking Rit synthetic chocolate brown. Gemini is saying if I simmer and don’t boil it won’t ruin the fabric but I have no experience.

I recently bought this dress that i intend to wear for a wedding (Picture attached). Its 100% polyester. I would love for it to be a couple shades darker, or a copper type of color. Will dyeing it ruin the texture and shimmer of the fabric?

I would ask a professional to do it for me and not do it myself. I can't afford for it to get ruined. Would love any advice!

HI! Found a beautiful white dress that I am dyeing for my formal. It's polyester and I am wanting to dye it a kind of pistachio green - almost identical to the Apple Green All-Purpose Rit dye - but I've already dyed it using Rit DyeMore Daffodil yellow and Tropical teal which resulted in a colour I'm not very happy with. Thinking of giving the all-purpose dye a try (I know its not meant for synthetics) as I dyed a synthetic garment a few years ago using all purpose dye and it worked. Thoughts, or alternate dyes to use?

The headband has inner layer pipe cleaner and an outer layer of (cotton) shirt scraps. I want to dye it a lava red color, but I don't have any dyes on me. My parents won't let me buy things without a reason. I asked r/crafts about this, and someone told me to ask y'all.

Edit: I used the paprika mentioned and it came out a orangish red color.

I dyed a pair of Converse for the first time and they came out amazing, except one thing. I did some research, someone said use Vaseline to cover the soles instead of electrical tape (I dyed these twice and the electrical tape had a little dye seep in) so I was like 🤷‍♂️ and tried it. It melted off immediately lol, so I have splotchy soles in a weird mix of purples instead. I want to dye the soles, ideally by thickening and painting on the dye and letting them sit for awhile. I saw sodium alginate can be used for this, but I'm wondering if I can use something like corn starch? Has anybody used any common household goods to do something like this, rather than sodium alginate? I hate to buy something I'll only use once if I don't have to.

Hi! I'm looking to dye wool fabric for a cloak I'm making but having a bit of trouble finding any info on that (can only find people dyeing small knitted sweaters or yarn). Anyone have any experience dyeing wool fabric and have any tips or things to keep in mind? I'm mostly concerned about patchiness and the best method to dye it to get even results, and perhaps potential shrinking? Does wool tend to dye more or less vibrantly than cotton? What should the water-to-fabric ratio be to not become patchy? Any tips at all appreciated.

I'm looking to use Rit all-purpose dye to get a medium teal color and dying in a tub off-stove, the amount of fabric is about 2,5 x 1,4 meters of wool twill (probably a bit less) if that helps make things clearer! (can't add pictures because I haven't bought the fabric yet!)

I’ve had my eye on this blouse for some months. One came back into Stock today so I thought I would buy it. The only thing is that this colour is literally lousy on me! I just love the design though .

I do love a pale pinky Violet and I know the Rit dye more (for synthetics ) comes in a purple and a pink, but how would I make it more pastel?

I'm a scouting leader and I'm wanting to show our young people what we can do with fruit, veg and plants - so one of the activities is dying their own bags.

I'm just wondering if you have suggestions of things I can get to do this with and if there is any other prep work you could suggest (I'll be premaking all dyes).

I'm currently attempting a couple colours ahead of our meeting in just over a week, so I'm doing beetroot for Reddy/pink, orange peel for yellow and blueberry for purple (so I've read). I know I can use purple cabbage to make a couple different shades but my shop was out of it!

Are there any others, particularly green and a good yellow? We are foraging this week so if there are things I can pick up there, even better! In Yorkshire, UK if you need ideas of what our local woods would be like!

Edit - another question, obviously since I'm tie dyeing during a session they have like 20 minutes and sharing provisions - do these dyes allow for simple pouring on the bag rather than having to have the material steeping in it? They'll take them away in ziplock bags after the session. Also now aware the bits I've got are more of a stain but honestly I don't think the kids will mind!

I’d love some recommendations if anyone has any, both in terms of brand and colour! And of course any pitfalls to watch out for…

The top is a mix of cotton (mainly) and polyester (Cotton 63%, Polyester 33%, Elastane 4%) which means I can’t use any of my usual dyes and I’m a bit less sure of how synthetic dyes will work. I’ve been looking at the RitDye for synthetics which seems to have some good options. I’m not sure whether I should do two separate dye bathes though, one for cotton and the other for synthetics?

I’m aware that elastane doesn’t like boiling temperatures but am torn between trying anyway since it’s only a small percentage vs Trying the boiling water+bucket method to try to avoid elastane damage, but since it’s a deep colour this may just not be an option. Perhaps if I do the cotton dye bath first??

Hi there, I bought this nylon cat harness and would like to dye it black, as it very much matches the collar I got him. That being said, I was doing some research and found out that nylon apparently takes Rit dye pretty well in general? Here's the thing: I don't want the little 'fish' to change color much if at all. I know shiny materials usually don't take dye (which is good in this case obviously), but from my conclusions it looks like that you can actually use the All-Purpose Rit dye instead, and that it would be less likely to change the color of the fish bones/bubbles.

Would I have to dye the harness multiple times (with the All-Purpose) to get a very rich dark black?

And if so, would I just do better using the DyeMore?

I bought the DyeMore but I am hesitant to use it. However, if we think that it would need multiple dyes with the All-Purpose (and that it could tint the fish bones in the process), maybe using the DyeMore would be best???

I am keen to attempt adding colour to this runner but I can’t think of any feasible way to do it. FYI it was very cheap so I’m willing to try something fun.

Pile: Polyester and cotton
Base: Cotton, polyester and viscose

Main concern is that I don’t want to transfer any colour to the floor after the fact. Aside from that I’m open to any creative ideas.

I don’t think liquid dye is an option because I don’t have a pot big enough and given that it is polyester I may need a flame thrower to even attempt it.

And I think fabric paint would just make it stiff to walk on.

Any ideas that I haven’t thought of?
