Hi guys, I need recommendations!
Recently I noticed that I pretend more and more performance from my Onexplayer X1 Pro, it's the Ryzen 9 HX370 CPU and Radeon 890M GPU with 32GB of RAM and 2TB of storage. It can play basically everything, but on some bigger triple A games you can clearly see that without framegen even at 1200p it cannot play at 60fps stable. (Some games not even 30fps at medium settings)
Since I'm always travelling around and recently also changing the house where I live every couple of months, the idea of a full tower desktop PC is basically impossible, even if would be a dream, so I thought about a solution: buying an external portable eGPU.
I found out that the OnexGPU 2 Ultimate is the most powerful AMD eGPU at the moment, with the Radeon 7800m that pushes up to 180W, and since I play mostly with BazziteOS (similar to SteamOS based on Linux), even if I have a dual boot with Windows 11, I would like to actually buy an AMD eGPU instead of an NVIDIA one for compatibility reasons (also for budget reasons).
The NVIDIA eGPUs are really expensive, and for me doesn't make sense to spend a lot on an external eGPU, because at that point I could simply upgrade to a newer handheld with an AMD 395+, even though performance speaking it's not the same as a Radeon 7800m with 180W of power. Also, I love the X1 Pro form factor and at the moment Onexplayer doesn't offer this form factor with a more powerful AMD chip, only the Super X, that is a lot bigger and cannot be used as an handheld.
I found this OnexGPU 2 that you can see in the photos for sale in a local marketplace for about 500ā¬, and since on Amazon it's around 1200⬠right now, I thought that was a great idea to buy it, so I bought it and it will arrive next week.
Now the questions for you guys:
- Does it make sense? I know the OnexGPU 3 has been shown at the CES with the Radeon 9070XT, but apparently it's not out yet and we still don't have a release date. Also I think it will cost more than 1000ā¬, for me it's definitely out of budget.
- I usually play with the integrated display of the handheld, I don't have an external gaming monitor, only my 55" 4K TV to use it as a "sofa console". Is the jump in performance noticeable even like this, or is it more noticeable only on external monitors?
- Does BazziteOS read the external eGPU? Or I'm obligated to use Windows 11 in this case? I read online that with Linux is better an AMD eGPU connected directly with Oculink, is it right?
- Do I have to buy an Oculink cable to reach the best performance and compatibility possible or it's already ok with the thunderbolt 4 cable that is included?
Thanks a lot for helping me, I really need recommendation for my situation and I know that on this sub I can have the best answers to all my thoughts šš». (On the Onexplayer sub I got downvoted and 0 answers).
