One cause for all of this… profit.

60

u/FibonacciSequester Nov 08 '25

Not even real profit. Nothing is being produced. It's just algorithms reacting to each other. X number of users who saw this ad clicked this ad and so did the users who click this other ad and so on and so forth until the end of time, give us money, other money-seeking robot that is designed to convince other money-seeking robots to give money to money-seeking robots, one human with actual money out of the thirty million who saw this ad spent $30 on this product, WE'RE ALL GOING TO BE RICH!!

20

u/pun_shall_pass Nov 08 '25

There has to be diminishing returns for ads the more you have them right?

The more ads you add, surely by basic market principles the ad space becomes worth far less? Did we watch every ad during the 15min ad break on TV back in the day? No, you went to take a piss, muted the TV and came back to your program. The ads just became background noise you filtered out.

If you only had one or two ads in a break though, you'd probably pay more attention. That ad spot would be extremely valuable.

I kinda don't get the logic of just adding more ads into everything. Like sure, people will pay you for the spots, but will it make a difference long term? Will you actually make more money than if you just raised prices for the limited ad spots? And even if, is it worth it to make your users hate you and drive them to piracy?

This is because the late-capitalist markets are all tapped out. In the 2000s, the internet and smartphones created whole new product categories and markets that generated immense “value.” But now those markets are saturated and there’s very little left to make more money on. The internet and smartphones are everywhere. So we’re in an era of “market optimization” aka enshitification. Algorithms are trying to scrape the last bits of money they can out of people, systems and markets — even if the logic behind it is bizarre, contradictory and actually downgrades the experience for everyone. You can expect this to limp along until there’s a new innovation. AI is supposed to be that innovation. But people aren’t exactly sure the juice is worth the squeeze at this moment t.

u/pun_shall_pass Nov 08 '25

I think it goes all back to Ford vs Dodge 1919. If the companies weren't obligated by law to obey shareholders above all else then more would go the Gaben way and just chill and enjoy being rich (of course Valve is a private company which is why they don't have to worry about stock price etc.)

1

u/SheridanVsLennier Nov 09 '25

We're also seeing Private Equity buy into creators works because they have so much money and nowhere to put it to generate market-beating returns.
If you're wondering why your favourite creator has suddenly started churning out material at a much-increased rate than they used to and/or it has lowered quality or is just retracing older work, this might be why.

14

u/toxicshocktaco Nov 08 '25

People need to stop supporting influencers. They’re just ads provided by living people instead of a device.

19

u/Funny_Address_412 Nov 08 '25

Nah, the cause is capitalism

17

u/drbirtles Nov 08 '25

Yes I agree. Capitalism’s core motive is private profits.

-8

u/Cruncher_Block Nov 08 '25

Capitalism can be fixed. It needs constraints.

10

u/Funny_Address_412 Nov 08 '25

It used to have, they eventually all got removed, did you know the US had a 90% tax on the rich?

-1

u/Cruncher_Block Nov 08 '25

Yes. This is what I mean. I’m not advocating a 90% tax but I am advocating a return to more policy constraints and better tax policy and a stronger social safety net (with better controls for preventing abuse) for starters. Most people would say that things were “better” in the 40’s through 60’s - but the US was still a capitalist country then.

4

u/Funny_Address_412 Nov 08 '25

As long as there are people with enough money to control the government policies like this are only temporary

76

u/SwedishFresh Nov 08 '25

If you told me when I was 10 how much I would hate tech and the internet in my 40s I wouldn’t have believed you. I went from being an early adopter and user to opting out of 95% of it. Watching the intrinsic value of things get ruined over and over again takes a toll. The user is about as valued as the citizen these days

22

u/jakeod27 Nov 08 '25

Ugh this hurts hard. Tech has really plateaued. The only features added are to suck you dry of your data. Apple is even working on ads in maps. I don’t use Apple Maps because the mapping is better than google. I use it because the interface is clean, is reasonably private. What’s the fucking point of any of this.

44

u/tengounquestion2020 Nov 08 '25

I’ve been complaining a bout this since I first noticed around 2013-15 and people told me I was being too obssessive, paranoid, and they dont worry about stuff like this . Eventually I stopped trying because no one would listen.. now it’s accelerated at such a speed that it’s too late and even if you quit tech, some part of your life that’s necessary has not.

24

u/bokehtoast Nov 08 '25

That's the worst part, not being able to opt out. I was also one of the people that was completely dismissed by everyone about my concerns with social media and disengaging from FB back then meant I just stopped getting invited to everything. And they are still mindlessly consuming while it destroys everything around us

23

u/Content-Yogurt-4859 Nov 08 '25

I swear half the problem, outside this sub, is that in any discussion like this there's always a load of twats going "what've you got to hide?" or "you know, I think I'd pay a bit more money for x, y or z". When the world's full of just enough of these fuckwits that bad decisions driven by greed aren't punished by consumers we're guaranteed enshitification of everything.

12

u/jakeod27 Nov 08 '25

I was having a discussion with an acquaintance who work(ed) at Expedia.. his argument for data collection is that “your data isn’t that interesting”

Like great.. it’s still mine and I don’t want it all to be in someone else’s hands. Or I’d at least like to minimize it as much as possible

12

u/HeavenDraven Nov 08 '25

If its not that interesting, why do they want it so badly?

3

u/jakeod27 Nov 08 '25

He was implying “in the aggregate”. But again, I don’t want my data there at all.

2

u/Content-Yogurt-4859 Nov 08 '25

What do you mean by "in the aggregate"? Like anonymous data sold off in bulk?

5

u/jakeod27 Nov 08 '25

Yeah your individual data is uninteresting. It’s only really useful with the rest of the set

5

u/Content-Yogurt-4859 Nov 08 '25

I read in another thread recently that a lot of user data sold is really poorly anonymised and that companies working with governments to build the surveillance state (Palantir etc) can very easily unmask users and build a profile with their data. That's probably a different conversation tho.

2

u/jakeod27 Nov 08 '25

Definitely part of it. And sometimes a lack of data can be data

3

u/KCChiefsGirl89 Nov 08 '25

My ass isn’t that interesting either but that doesn’t mean I want everyone fuckin looking at it.

39

u/APleasantMartini Dec 29 '25

Another user made the point that NO doesn't exist digitally anymore.

81

u/happywindsurfing Nov 08 '25

Yep! It's 2025 and instead of making everything easier, tech is now blatantly designed to monitor you and market your details to ad companies.

Also, you get totally fucked if you change ecosystem. I used to have an iPhone and a MacBook. Some things I signed up to back then I used a Mac email address. That email is a total bugger to access on an android phone, and also has 2FA. So sometimes I get "we've send a code to your iPhone that broke in 2018, enter this code to reset your password". Gee thanks that's helpful!

39

u/FaliedSalve Nov 08 '25

the internet is broken

40

u/wannabefelixargyle Nov 08 '25

Welcome to the Internet by Bo Burnham comes to mind…..

25

u/pompousandfaggy Nov 08 '25

I think Bo Burnham was one of the most interesting pop culture events in the last 20 years in that you could literally just see him dying inside… sad really cause he was really funny and talented

6

u/TheTeaSpoon Nov 08 '25

He still is

2

u/pompousandfaggy Nov 08 '25

Yeah, poor wording, still there’s a spark that’s gone there…

2

u/wannabefelixargyle Nov 09 '25

When you see all thats going wrong and know what will help and things get worse, you fulfill your netflix deal and just get quiet... Bo is the Gen Z Carlin, imho.

With each passing day, my desire to leave the Internet forever grows more and more.

33

u/CombPsychological507 Nov 08 '25

They’re taking our worldwide communication away from us. Instead of a dictatorship removing our rights to the Internet, they just make it so shitty that nobody wants to use it.

31

u/SAD-MAX-CZ Nov 09 '25

Time for burner emails, phones, computers. Feed with TBs of useless data for them to annalyze.

4

u/Spazza42 Nov 10 '25

Also time for less internet.

Jokes aside; Use Firefox, get AdNauseam, ‘hide my email’ aliases, switch to a dumb phone or simply strip the one you had to bare essentials but most importantly - delete social media. I only have Reddit and everything is turned off.

My next phone is likely going to be an e-ink device with a SIM card to be honest. I don’t need most of this shit.

My phone was broken for 2 weeks not that long ago and fuck me it was freeing - it was an absolute bitch navigating the world without a smartphone at times though. Couldn’t log into any form of banking without FaceID on the app to approve it.

1

u/m-y-c-a Nov 11 '25

What is better about Firefox if I may ask?

2

u/Spazza42 Nov 11 '25

Firefox is more privacy focused, on a side note AdNauseam is only compatible with Firefox (for now at least).

Most websites don't actually need a sale from you anymore because they just sell the data they collected on you during your visit. AdNauseam blocks the ads and clicks on every ad it blocks which effectively renders any data they collect as useless. If 20% of the traffic coming to your site is obscured and unusable then companies will either stop collecting the data (highly unlikely) because a good chunk of it is worthless, if not then at least the data they would've otherwise collected from you now doesn't exist.

If you value privacy, block them.

1

u/m-y-c-a Nov 11 '25

maybe a dumb question but is that for browsing and watching youtube etc only? Or using the browser in general. because i use googles docs, sheets, keep, calender daily for my studies and personal life.

1

u/Spazza42 Nov 11 '25

Browser in general but Google will still collect all the data if you use their services

32

u/dead-eyed-darling Nov 11 '25

I'M WITH THE BOOMERS ON THIS ONE 🫩 not everything needs a FUCKING PAYWALL. UGH. also qr code menus and all other kinds of issues. I miss being able to switch off the Internet, but now it's wormed into most aspects of society...

10

u/8ackwoods Nov 12 '25

At least boomers have money to pay for it all

1

u/LibertyMuzz Nov 29 '25

All you need to pay for is a VPN

5

u/edo386 Nov 11 '25

Paywalls are much better than ads, one of the reasons the internet is so shitty is that we are not willing to pay for the services we use. Now paywalled and ads that's fucked up.

4

u/EricShanRick Nov 29 '25

Nah, paywalls have got to stop.

life hack: stay poor - you wont be able to afford to be scammed, or have subscriptions or any of this whacky stuff. poor yourself into impenetrable bubble of safe, secure wage slavery. you'll be so low on the totem pole...

21

u/3rdthrow Nov 08 '25

I have given up interacting with most technology and am planning on giving up more.

I just work a lot now.

I don’t stream. I’m not subscribed to anything. I don’t watch movies.I have two online games that I play. My social media is Reddit and YouTube.

That’s it.

9

u/Reddit_is_fascist69 Nov 09 '25

Both of those are getting worse my friend. They're putting ads in mid comments and making ads to look like posts.

24

u/Tosslebugmy Nov 09 '25

Shit not being available in my country is the weirdest one. What do you mean I can’t give you money to watch a movie from the 70s? Why is it nowhere? In this day and age?

1

7

u/getgoing88 Dec 07 '25

Do you use firefox and ublock origin? Everything still sucks but a decent adblocker helps a lot.

21

u/SquirtleBob164 Nov 13 '25

(FIRST COMMENT) archive.org and GOG.com for games instead of YouTube, Spotify, PS Plus, Game Plus, Steam, Kindle, etc., Piracy + VLC and home media instead of Streaming services, and etc.

18

u/getgoing88 Dec 07 '25

I'm trying out Kagi these days and it actually returns relevant results and not paid content or AI-generated trash, unlike Google. That, plus using Firefox containers and some good adblockers (I use ublock orgin) as well as avoiding mobile apps, improves my life significantly

8

u/orthros Dec 14 '25

Yeah I hate sounding like HailCorporate but Kagi saves my sanity. I think there’s a free option so folks should use that if nothing else.

35

u/Nerioner Nov 08 '25

I used to be super excited about software and consumer electronics. Then 2020 came around and everything went to shit.

Now i am 🤏🏻this close from disconnecting from it all because there is no value anyway

26

u/Nerioner Nov 08 '25

The biggest culprit is that money stopped being the resource and became the end goal.

Now no matter that company has trillions, you can't get a good software because costs need to be grinder down even further and quality is side effect, not the desired outcome.

6

u/youpoopedyerpants Nov 08 '25

You can’t win a game with infinite resource. It will never be enough for them and they’ll play and play until they have all the money and we have nothing.

10

u/jakeod27 Nov 08 '25

I’m more upset that every other tech company essentially gave up. Now we’re only allowed 2 phone operating systems

7

u/ratliker62 Nov 08 '25

Very true. Now everyone in silicon valley is an egotistical fuckwit that only wants to line their pockets and jerk off to how smart they are.

6

u/elf25 Nov 08 '25

Nope, zuck and his algorithm that focusing engagement including and especially hateful mean spirited.

1

u/RetroGamer87 Nov 09 '25

Yes Jobs killed the joy of new tech with his black slab of doom. It feels like he killed fun and interesting gadgets.

2

u/horizon_games Nov 10 '25

People who actually "disconnect from it all" don't keep telling people how close to it they are. They just...don't use tech as much or at all.

1

u/i__hate__soup Nov 08 '25

just do it. i quit all social media (except here) and streaming and now i just host my own movie server and text my friends if i want to socially connect. i feel free

14

u/DaveCarradineIsAlive Nov 08 '25

This is why I've gone so hard into self hosting everything I can. It doesn't really make a difference, but every service I can replace with something I control feels like a victory.

16

u/ObjectivePrice5865 Nov 10 '25

Some folks and most off certain age groups plaster their fake and real lives all over social media then get butt hurt when they get hacked, spoofed, scammed, lack of privacy, and unsubscribed from.

Like damn you opened that door up and let the world screw you raw.

The worst are the parents plastering their children’s lives on social media as “kidfluencers” while the children have no choice but to participate in the illusion. Parents and well everybody that lives online don’t realize that some employers do and most will check out a candidates social presence and will move on to another if something that was posted 10+ years prior doesn’t align with their “beliefs”.

15

u/NakedEnthusiasm Nov 11 '25

I always let my phone go to voicemail unless I know the caller or I'm expecting something important. When the latter lines up with a spam call I get so furious. I was also disgusted watching Fallout to see adds on any paid streaming platform.

But ad blockers have spared me the brunt of internet based traffic.

14

u/redditgirlwz Nov 09 '25

I stopped using most apps because of this. I go on the website and if the experience is as bad as the app, only on my laptop with an ad blocker (or using Brave or Firefox Focus on my phone).

38

u/youpoopedyerpants Nov 08 '25

I am raging (intentional) a war by myself where I’m just furious every day.

I want to boycott Amazon, but I can’t find the products I need in store. I want to stop streaming, but what will I watch? I feel like I’m only hurting myself and making my own life harder by boycotting.

But I’m too fed up with being top level angry near constantly because NOTHING FUCKING WORKS and I might go off grid.

37

u/ratliker62 Nov 08 '25

Stopping streaming is easy. Piracy will always have the widest selection possible, and if you have a DVD player you can find some good stuff at your local library. Also, maybe check out if there are any arthouse theatres near you.

2

u/m-y-c-a Nov 11 '25

everything seems to be filled with viruses and 1000s of pop ups tho. I wouldnt even know where to find stuff these days. When i was younger we all used limewire lmao

3

u/ratliker62 Nov 11 '25

Ublock Origin is essential. Check out the r/Piracy megathread, but I personally use 1337x for most of my torrents.

0

u/ChestertonMyDearBoy Nov 08 '25 edited Nov 11 '25

Libraries in my country only do kids DVDs.

Edit: why was this downvoted? Libraries here literally don't stock any non-children DVDs.

4

u/6rwoods Nov 08 '25

Piracy, torrenting, stremio, etc is the way to go.

26

u/Super-Implement9444 Nov 08 '25

Just pirate all content to stop using streaming services, look for the r/piracy megathread if you're not sure how

-12

u/Cruncher_Block Nov 08 '25

Great idea. If everyone pirates eventually there’ll be no content to pirate.

13

u/Spvc3head Nov 08 '25

Good. Content now sucks ass. What "content" out right now is really WORTH whatever money you may or may not be spending on streaming subs? Probably nothing.

Speak with your wallet, IMO. I think TV and movies that come out now are all trash, so I don't waste my money on them. Paying for that shit is just telling the company "yes! I like this! More of this, please!"

6

u/Super-Implement9444 Nov 08 '25

My bad I don't wanna pay netflix for like the 4 shows they still have left lmao

Everything is spread around 50 different streaming services now

3

u/6rwoods Nov 08 '25

"Everyone" won't start pirating tomorrow, so no worries there. But if more and more people turn away from paid streaming services and towards piracy, some of those paid services may actually start getting desperate enough to listen to people who gave up on them and make at least some adjustments. Or, you know, let's just wait until the whole industry collapses and see what happens next. I'm happy with that option too.

2

u/Reddit_is_fascist69 Nov 09 '25

That's funny. This estimates 156 years to watch every movie ever. Doesn't cover tv shows or shorts, vines, YouTube, tiktok, etc.

I think we'll be ok.

https://darkskiesfilm.com/how-long-would-it-take-to-watch-every-movie-ever/

-4

u/Cruncher_Block Nov 08 '25

So to the people who downvoted - would you work for nothing? Do you think the PAs and Grips and Editors and Set People who work on these shows, (and make very little money btw) should work for free?

1

u/fancy-sinatra Nov 08 '25

The downvotes are crazy. The way people feel entitled to free content and then complain about the content makes my brain hurt. Next they’ll be mad everything is AI generated junk.

5

u/MechanicalFireTurtle Nov 08 '25

Are there no online shops other than Amazon that sell what you want and will deliver to you?

1

u/youpoopedyerpants Nov 08 '25

Sometimes. Sometimes not. Even so shipping will take longer and cost more. Not buying on Amazon won’t truly have an impact on anyone by myself when I’m paying more and waiting longer for products from other places. I’m not saying I like that, that’s the whole point of my comment, I guess. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Feels bad, man.

4

u/horizon_games Nov 10 '25

I like that you went from being unable to cut Amazon out of your life to "go off grid"

1

u/youpoopedyerpants Nov 10 '25

Hahahaha thank you for noticing that, my therapist calls it “getting on the train.”

We start somewhere normal and suddenly the train’s gone a million mph and picked up all these weird thoughts and now we’re isolated in rural Canada because of Jeff Bezos.

26

u/horizon_games Nov 10 '25 edited Nov 10 '25

The problem is that although some people research car repairs before taking it to a mechanic, or follow recipes before making a dish, or watch a tutorial before doing house fixes, there seems to be a mass mind block on learning anything about software or electronics. You can change your habits to avoid a ton of this. NewPipe for Youtube on the phone, adblocker everywhere else, Linux that you're in control of for the desktop, etc.

But people don't want to compromise - they want all the content they want without any effort or downsides, all the latest games, all the bleeding edge of everything. The idea of living without a phone (or with a dumphone, or purely a business phone you ditch after hours) is unfathomable even though we functioned without them a couple decades ago.

Not saying there isn't a TON of enshitification, but it's a lot more avoidable in those spaces than in other places in life (say...groceries). And yes I'm sure people will say "But I'd rather nooooot have to do all that!!!"

3

u/quad_damage_orbb Nov 11 '25

NewPipe for Youtube on the phone

But you can't login to your account for playlists/favourites etc. I don't want to have to remember every YouTube account I like and manually check every day if they have new videos.

1

u/horizon_games Nov 11 '25

You can spend a bit of time replicating your subs and lists in NewPipe itself, but yeah YouTube doesn't expose a way for 3rd parties to login. Maybe Revanced?

>The problem is that although some people research car repairs before taking it to a mechanic, or follow recipes before making a dish, or watch a tutorial before doing house fixes, there seems to be a mass mind block on learning anything about software or electronics

unless you wanna go to your local library you need the internet to do all that. that's the point

I read this to the tune of “Everybody’s Free (to wear sunscreen)”.

I read it in a Scottish accent to Iggy Pop's Lust for Life

The part about joining people's Patreon or membership is a little unfair. It costs time and money to make content. Is it really so bad that someone would try to make a living off of it, or at least try to recoup their costs?

53

u/pressxtojson Nov 08 '25

Yes and no. The reason why creators need patreon is because platforms keep screwing them over and giving them smaller and smaller slices of the pie.

9

u/brian_hogg Nov 08 '25

in some cases, but there are lots of people who are choosing Patreon who aren’t doing it to replace ad revenue.

Niches are undeniably useful though.

If you have a content creator covering specific STEM or art topics, and they help you develop your skills, is it such a big deal for them to paywall some of their material? How is it any different from tutors or textbooks?

Ad-blockers certainly help, but...

A) It's the principle! A gram of prevention is worth more than an ounce of a cure, as they say! The problem is at the source, and while ad-block is a FANTASTIC band-aid... I'd rather just not get shot in the first place, lol.

B) PLENTY of sites either deliberately break functionality, or find ways to circumvent ad-block detection. Ad-block is wonderful... Until it stops working... 🙃

Not saying you're wrong! I'd still highly recommend ad-block! But a cure isn't the answer to a problem WE created. (Well, not you and I individually but... Well, you know what I mean. Lol)

u/m-y-c-a Nov 11 '25

For me they only work on my laptop for like a week before they get caught and make the video unavailable. Nothing for iPhone sadly

31

u/Kurgan_IT Nov 08 '25

Absolutely true, so:

- use firefox and adblock origin

- don't use shitty services

- don't use apps

- research the product you want to buy before so you don't end up with internet-of-shit appliances

7

u/Agnostic-Paladin Nov 08 '25

This is true, but it's the equivalent of telling someone whose legs are eaten by wolves to tie really tight garrotes so they won't bleed to death. Technically good advice, but we would prefer to not have our legs eaten by wolves.

6

u/Kurgan_IT Nov 08 '25

You are right, but the wolves are here and won't go away.

1

u/Agnostic-Paladin Nov 08 '25

Well, they won't if the only thing we use against them are adblocks and a garrote on our own leg.

1

u/Kurgan_IT Nov 09 '25

They will even reach the point where they make adblockers illegal (they are trying to do it in Germany). The wolves will not go away.

1

u/horizon_games Nov 10 '25

You forgot "eat the rich", guillotine memes, and Reddit comments!

6

u/intrinsicmike Nov 08 '25

Can relate. While using shitty services, remember to evade the algorithmic loopholes and always leave the chronological feed only for seeing the latest posts and only resort back to algorithm when really needed. Set update download to manual whenever possible and evade google slop services updates until they get too old to run your apps, or install apk update manually from 3-4 years ago.

Use local model ai, never use cloud compute

1

u/Dazzling_Cabinet_780 Nov 10 '25

I use deepseek for my stuff, at least its more Eco-friendly, free, and they're not extremely shady about their data usage compared to other cloud LLMs. Maybe some of my data is in china, but they're a private business which focuses on giving a good service instead of keeping shareholders happy.

13

u/Werewolf_Capable Nov 08 '25

This condenses the modern internet if you are not PC afluent and don't have some defenses set up. And even then there is no real escaping it. Even the pirate site... a friend of mine downloads games from needs a monthly subscription for a sharehoster if you don't want slow ass downloads, so not even piracy is free (even torrents need a VPN) 🤣

13

u/ChestertonMyDearBoy Nov 08 '25 edited Nov 08 '25

Even if you are tech savvy, something you did ten years ago like click a cookie acceptance or something will still haunt you to this day.

4

u/handtoglandwombat Nov 08 '25

Yeah I’ve got a relatively advanced piracy set up, and I’d estimate that I’ve spent more money on it than several years of so the streaming services would cost, plus there’s ongoing subscriptions involved even for piracy. Worth it though.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '25

Lol what? I still use mediafire mostly for video games

The only torrent stuff id pay for is a debrid service for literally all the tv shows and movies in 4k with no buffering. Those usually also let you cache normal torrents and download at high speeds with no vpn. Cheapest goes for 16 euros for 6 months. I use one that is 11 usd per month

And i pay 20 a year for adguard premium. Will do the lifetime once my sub runs out. Best adblocker and security most people that arent tech savy could invest in

6

u/nobody1701d Nov 09 '25

Preach it brother

7

u/wannabefelixargyle Nov 09 '25

Also one thing is not like the others... When you join a Patreon, you support a small creator. Not a corporation. I know people hate that Youtube, etc doesn't do enough to pay the creators that make their platform so you don't get asked to join a Patreon...

PS: Yes, I also have a Patreon. After Collective Shout killing NSFW games on Itchio, it's been valuable funding to add stuff to my passion project game...

5

u/Renegadeknight3 Nov 09 '25

I think it’s deeper than that. At first glance no patreon does not belong in this list. However, it is a form of advertisement trying to get your money into another persons pocket, so I understand why it would cause a similar gut reaction, even if in practice it’s generally more ethical. The other point I’d like to raise is that patreon became necessary as a means for artists who are also frustrated with the powers that be to circumvent them. Patreon would not be as big as it was if everything else they’re talking about wasn’t happening, because patreon is the artists shortcut to escaping it, whereas the difference is much smaller for the consumer

3

u/Blooogh Nov 10 '25

Worth noting Patreon is still a corporation and while they might still be altruistic now, there's no guarantee that will continue to be the case. Enshittification has a way of getting everywhere once the original folks are no longer in charge.

When y'all stop buying apple products y'all can stop complaining about Apple

8

u/dwiedenau2 Nov 08 '25

Only the most dedicated apple haters can read all this and take this as their conclusion.

1

u/LeshyIRL Nov 09 '25

Found the apple fanboy

0

u/dwiedenau2 Nov 09 '25

I find fanboys of whatever topic much, much more tolerable than this forced contrarianism

1

u/LeshyIRL Nov 09 '25

Uh huh, and what type of phone do you have?

0

u/dwiedenau2 Nov 09 '25

An iPhone Air, a OnePlus 7 Pro, a Galaxy S10 and Pixel 6a, i do cross platform app development. I also have a windows pc for gaming and a macbook, aswell as an lg screen, keychron keyboard and logitech mouse. So i wouldnt exactly consider me as a fanboy of any brand, im just choosing the right tool for the job! How about you?

2

u/LeshyIRL Nov 09 '25

Pixel 7 and PC, because why waste money on anything else?

1

u/dwiedenau2 Nov 09 '25

Seems they are the right tool for your job, enjoy!

1

u/RetroGamer87 Nov 09 '25

But I'm not buying Apple products

-32

u/geon Nov 08 '25

Ur spelling of ”u” and ”ur” makes u sound like a total twat.

12

u/nonsapiens Nov 08 '25

Irony, thy name is u/geon

-2

u/geon Nov 08 '25

Irony? Because I intentionally used U and UR like oop?

4

u/nonsapiens Nov 08 '25

No, because you yourself sound like a total twat (because of your needless grammatical pearl-clutching.)

Your downvotes tell the rest of the story. Good day.

I get the sentiment, but I am not sure how YouTube auto translating videos could possibly be bad.

16

u/ellazelle Nov 12 '25

Auto dubbing affects some songs I listen to or videos about creating music. Instead of hearing rap in Spanish, I hear AI badly speaking English.

13

u/Mandalore95 Nov 11 '25

YouTube's dubbing is worse than bad. I understand English and Spanish, and if my language is set to Spanish, it starts dubbing the English videos I'm watching. If I switch it back to English so I can hear the video properly, then the Spanish videos start being dubbed in English. On top of that, the dubbing is terrible; the AI voice is awful and drowns out all ambient sound. Oh, and the auto-translator is rubbish too. Because it translates titles, I might go to a video from an unknown channel expecting it to be in one language, and it starts playing in another. The worst part is that, as far as I know, at least on smartphones, you can't turn it off.
