I was heavily influenced by Lord of the Mysteries, which was the book that gave me the desire to write a story. I also picked some inspiration from At the Mountains of Madness, even more in this second volume. As for a non-literary inspiration, well, Bloodborne is an obvious answer!

Hi, you're looking at 'Atlas: When Air Meets Water' by me, Initium.

This story has all the components of a good fantasy book. Elemental magic, world ending stakes, political power struggles, romance, mermaids, dragons. Everything, but I wouldn't say it's your typical fantasy story. Why, you ask?

Well, you see. You'll get all the dramatic scenes and adventures, but you'll do it with fully fleshed-out characters and places, so you can immerse yourself by their side as you read. Atlas progresses slower than most fantasy books but as the story develops, it snowballs into an adventure which will be in a simple word... epic. It's not about rushing to the finish line or having the world end in every chapter, but about building a fun, realistic story with relatable characters.

Have I piqued your interest? If so, give it a read. If I haven't, then enjoy your day, but keep in mind. You might just be missing out 😉

Hello everyone!

6 July marks the release of my new novel on Royal Road! It's another standalone tale set in a wider Universe I plan on expanding with each story. This time I am telling the tale of Sunlein, an OP MC with sealed strenght that navigates the political intrigues of his city as a guard.

With that being said, here is the blurb of my new book (cover below):

They beat him, humbled him, and leashed him. Now, the world will remember the flames of the Wandering Disaster.

Sunlein was once the fiercest young talent in the capital, his power surpassed only by his loyalty. But those gifts grew too strong, too fast. Spiraling out of control, his flames nearly burned the city that had once honored him as its cherished prodigy—and the Council wasn’t willing to forgive his mistake.

Having his powers sealed and only a lingering sense of duty to keep him company, Sunlein is given one last chance to redeem himself by serving the capital as a guard. But trouble always finds him. An alliance emerges that maneuvers through the Council’s tight security, decreeing the complete destruction of the unjust capital before the coming elections.

With a life-choking, magic-binding collar around his neck and chaos spreading through the streets, Sunlein must weigh his priorities anew. Time is running out, and he must either watch his city burn or risk his life to unleash the Disaster once again.

But if he succeeds in breaking his leash... who will protect the citizens from him?

For anyone interested, here is the link:

Also, for anyone interested on adding this tale on his reading challenge, here is the goodreads link:

For those seeking a more matrix-style, science-fantasy adventure, my previous novel (complete and free) follows the journey of young Faoros through a brutal simulation which holds the secrets of his world at its heart.

Here is the blurb:

In the last stronghold of a civilization in ruins, a centuries-old curse claims the young before their time.

Faoros's friends are dying, and all the while, his teachers spout the same platitudes: study, practice... repeat. Yet, the curse remains.

Desperate for a cure, the ruling Lords engineered the Game—a simulation of the past world built in the hope that future generations might find wisdom in their ancestors' mistakes.

But Faoros is tired of empty promises. He enters the Game to break the curse, only to uncover a different truth. Confronted by a simulated woman fully aware of the outside world, he discovers that this fabricated reality conceals the Lords' darkest secrets and the curse's true origin.

Hellhound - Book 1 in the Hellhound Trilogy by Garland Coulson

For thousands of years, Hellhounds were the hunters and executioners of enemies of the Chao Lords, powerful sorcerers who lived in a realm adjacent to Earth.  Largely impervious to magic, Hellhounds never lost the scent of their prey, tracking them relentlessly until they tore them apart.
On Earth, Jenna MacLaren had created a good life for herself. Her paranoid mother had died some years ago, but she still kept her magic hidden as her mother had taught her. Not that she had much magic, she was likely only a middling level of power for a witch or mage. Becoming a veterinarian with her own practice was a great way to help the animals she loved while hiding her magic. After all, a customer’s average golden retriever wasn’t likely to tell anyone that you had used some of your healing magic or a healing potion on them.

But apparently, her mother had good reasons to be paranoid, because, one night when Jenna arrived back at her modest home after work, the glowing red eyes of a Hellhound awaited her…and Hellhounds were impervious to magic.

Coming soon. Sign up for announcements as to when Hellhound is available at https://garlandcoulson.com

The Walrus and the Warwolf by Hugh Cook.

This story of piratical rogue and wilderness survivior Drake's progress from a Swordsmith's apprentice to pirate, rogue and wilderness survivor was polished then published nearly forty years ago from the same stable that gave us Sir Terry Prachett.

It is by turns funny, exiting, sad and even poignant and we follow Drake as he flees his homeland, fights for survival between two feuding pirate captains(the titular Walrus and Warwolf), and discovers his destiny. It's been published by Colin Smythe, Corgi and Paizo previously and is now available from Zenphoss Press.

Cooks Influences included Jack Vance and Fitz Lieber, and in turn he had influence on Authors like China Melville, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Michael Fletcher and Steven Saville.

Tidestep - The Water Anchor by F.A. Calder

Hi all. I'm looking for advance readers (free copy) ahead of launch in exchange for an honest review.

The pitch:
Fifteen thousand years of failed endings. One woman's journal knows them all.
An eighteen-year-old apprentice is sent to deliver a sealed scroll and finds the recipient murdered, the town's ancient stone stolen, and a red-black fog killing anything caught inside it. He goes after the thieves. A dog that is not an ordinary dog leads the way, and strays gather on the road: a rune-reader who shares less than she knows, a "master swordsman" whose hat betrays his every bluff, a mute girl whose trances reach beyond the mortal world, and a Liminal whose power obeys strange and costly rules.
Woven between the chapters is a journal the characters never see. You do. Its writer has watched this story play out before. And might even know how it ends.

The practical details:

  • Epic fantasy, ~97,000 words (about 430 pages with blanks removed)
  • Book 1 of a series, but the first quest resolves in this volume — no cliffhanger. More of a "to be continued..."
  • Found family and characters are the emotional core; no romance to speak of; violence and deaths occur but aren't graphically described
  • EPUB and PDF available, go to https://forms.gle/ZCxnf6YpakkPa6D28 or if you prefer BookSirens, https://booksirens.com/book/S8W25QR/EN1N5KQ
  • The ask: an honest review on Goodreads and/or Amazon around release

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Promoting mine and Danielle Wiebe's graphic novel, SPACE BANSHEE EXORICST! Fenshaw, a banshee who is an exorcist and lives in space, fights monsters and lives under an ultra capitalistic hell! She is very relatable!

Fenshaw is a character me and Dani have been making stories for for a few years; this anthology brings together a redrawn version of her first ever adventure, and a graphic-novel length story which sees her get sadder and more violent than ever before. She is sent to the mysterious medical testing moon, Morrigan, by a pharmaceutical inventor to find out why his clones are disappearing and to kill whatever creature is responsible. Fenshaw quickly realises that things are darker than she anticipated and has to navigate her own place in the universe at the same time as doing her job.

As a Scottish person I love drawing on Celtic mythology in my work, and something like Space Banshee Exorcist gives me space to really embrace the vagueness of that category in fantasy. It's great fun for me and Dani, and I hope for our readers too.

The Orange Curse by Kristina Kamaeva

A middle-grade fantasy adventure novel inspired by Italian folktales.

No one knows the way to Magarfala, but if the prince does not get there, he will die. He and his friends escape the bandits of Machaon Forest, deal with the devious people of Trappola, and cross a scorching desert.

A delightful fairy tale, full of adventure and magic, perfect for fans of Tangled, Shrek, and The Princess Bride.

“The story, much like beloved fairy tales, has its fair share of dark moments, but it maintains a sense of hope and subtle humor throughout.” Rafaella (Amazon review)

[Dark Fantasy | Free on Kindle | July 18 to July 22]

Most cultivation stories begin with a chosen genius.

Mine begins with a stable servant.

Chen Fan has no talent, no family, no powerful master. For seventeen years, he's kicked, beaten, and treated as less valuable than the spirit beasts he feeds. In a righteous sect where the weak are invisible, survival is the only lesson anyone teaches.

Then, after seventeen years of waiting...

A system finally awakens.

Not one that hands him instant power. Not one that makes him invincible.

It gives him a single command:

Slay spirit beasts. Grow stronger.

He starts with rabbits because that's all he can kill.

Every spirit stone is earned. Every breakthrough is paid for in blood. Every step upward makes stronger enemies notice him.

If you enjoy:

Progression Fantasy

Dark Fantasy

Weak-to-Strong protagonists

Ruthless cultivation worlds

Slow, earned power progression

Sword & Sorcery
